THE TRUTH?

Saint Joseph College of Rosario Batangas, Inc.

Eighth Commandment

“You shall not bear false witness against

your neighbor.”

- Exodus 20:16; Deuteronomy 5:20

Saint Joseph College of Rosario Batangas, Inc.

Eighth Commandment

protects our relationship with God

by seeking and bearing true witness to the

truth, we keep our relationship with God the
truth (John 14:6), and we who speak truth
from the heart abides with God (Psalm 15:1-2)

Eighth Commandment

Speaking the truth also shows our love

toward our fellow human beings.

Lies and deceit cause separation and

distrust, while truth, though sometimes hard
produces unity and trust.

Old Testament

truth is not a private possession of

anyone since any concerns, problems,
and decisions of the people were
referred to the whole

to bear false witness against a neighbor

is, therefore, to lie against the whole
community (this explains the severity of the
punishment for breaking the law)

New Testament

We came to know who JESUS is- the

TRUTH Himself, the LORD of
commandments.

He Himself becomes the basis of our true

relationship with God.

New Testament

“For this I was born, for this I came

into the world, to testify to the truth.
Anyone committed to the truth hears
my voice.”
- John 18:37

New Testament
As LORD, He commanded the people:

“You have heard the commandment ‘Do not take a false

oath.’ What I tell you is: do not swear at all. . .Say YES
when you mean yes and NO when you mean no. Anything
beyond that is from the evil one.”

- Matthew 5: 33-37

Jesus Christ
He is not just the LORD of commandments
but the MAN of commandments.

He was not pretentious and not even a

hypocrite who says one and does the
other- His promises were true.

He related with the disciples and the

people in truth.

Jesus Christ
When He said, “love one another as I have
loved you.” (John 13:34) He indeed has loved
the people through His preaching and
healing, forgiving, and miracles.

He was always true to Himself and

completely open to others, dealing with
them not in abstract generalities, but in
truth, i.e., in the reality of their concrete
situation.

WHAT DOES THE EIGHTH
COMMANDMENT COMMAND
US TO DO?

Saint Joseph College of Rosario Batangas, Inc.

Eighth Commandment
commands us to speak the truth in all
things at all times especially concerning
the good name and honor of others

To speak the TRUTH is a COMMAND. It is

neither an option nor an appeal. It is
something that we must do.

This obligation (speaking the truth) arises

from our nature as CHILDREN OF GOD
who is TRUTH (John 14:6).
Saint Joseph College of Rosario Batangas, Inc.
To Speak the Truth

means to tell what is TRUE- something is

true when what is said conforms to
REALITY.

Truth hurts but there is no other way

because only TRUTH can lead us to the
RIGHT PATH.

WHY SHOULD ONE NOT
BEAR FALSE WITNESS
AGAINST ONE’S NEIGHBOR?

Saint Joseph College of Rosario Batangas, Inc.

Bearing false witness against one’s
neighbor is contrary to our
IDENTITY and VOCATION.

God commands us not to bear false witness against

our neighbor but rather “profess the truth”
(Ephesians 4:15). It is our inner calling to speak the
truth.
When God has given the FACULTY OF
INTELLECT, He ordered this faculty in
search of the truth so that this truth
(comes from Divine mind) may be known
to all humanity.

WHY SHOULD WE PROTECT
OUR GOOD NAME?

Saint Joseph College of Rosario Batangas, Inc.

Our Good Name. . .

is something we share from God, who is all good and

loving, and can affect our relationship with other
people.
is a GIFT- because we are created by God, redeemed
by His Son and being sanctified by their love, we are
good and we remain honorable: we have DIGNITY
that people RESPECT us.
Belonging to the family of God, we are GOOD,
HONORABLE, and DIGNIFIED individuals.

In the Sacrament of Confirmation,

We become the SALT of the earth and

LIGHT of the world.

We become BEARERS and HERALDS of the truth.

It is contrary to our mission of spreading

the Lord’s presence in truth if we do not
keep the eighth commandment.
