SUBJECT 1
What are the advantages and the disadvantages of living in a small flat?

SUBJECT 2
Read the text below and answer the questions:

According to a recent study, 25% of British parents have reduced their working life over the last 10
years to spend more time with their family. Some have gone part-time, others have changed their
career path, for example, by choosing small family-friendly employers. Working mothers and fathers
often take turns looking after their children. As a result, even though they are spending more time with
their children, taking part in educational activities, children see less of their parents as a couple, and
this may have a negative emotional impact on the children. However, even with the pressure of both
work and home life, parents who work are more likely to stay together, because nothing is worse in a
relationship than financial problems.

1. What solutions have the British parents found to get to spend more time with their children?
2. What kind of activities do you do together with your parents?
3. Why is it important for children to spend time with their parents?

Why should people read some information about a foreign country before visiting it?

SUBJECT 2
Read the text below and answer the questions:

Urban planners encourage car use. The average US family makes 10 car trips every day. The suburbs
are so far from the city centres that cars are a necessity. If you ask me, the focus on the car is a tragedy
of human planning, and it’s alarming that more and more tank-like cars can be seen in traffic these
days. However, times are changing: the threat of climate change, the economic crisis and the
possibility that prices at the petrol pump could go up again are all conspiring to make car travel less
attractive. I must admit that, whenever I see petrol price rise, I am glad and cheer. Quietly, of course.
They already think I’m crazy here just for liking small cars.

1. What does the writer think about the future of car travel?
2. If you were to buy a car, would you buy a small one or a big one?
3. What are the advantages of using public transport?

Normcore wearers are people who do not wish to distinguish themselves from others by their
clothing. This is not to mean that they are unfashionable people who wear whatever comes to hand, but
that they consciously choose clothes that are undistinguished – except, frequently, for a highly
visible label to impart prestige. The "normcore" trend has been interpreted as a reaction to fashion
oversaturation resulting from ever faster-changing fashion trends. As used by K-Hole magazine,
"normcore" referred to an attitude, not a particular code of dress, intended to mean "finding liberation
in being nothing special”. Normcore clothes include everyday items of casual wear such as t-
shirts, hoodies, short-sleeved shirts, jeans and chino pants, but not items such as neckties or blouses.
These clothes are worn by men and women alike, making normcore a unisex style.
1. What is “normcore”, according to K-Hole magazine?
2. In your opinion, how important is it to follow fashion trends?
3. Is there a relationship between the clothes people wear and their personality?

Glastonbury Festival is a five-day music festival that takes place near Pilton, Somerset, England. In
addition to contemporary music, the festival hosts dance, comedy, theatre, circus, cabaret, and other
arts. Leading pop and rock artists have headlined, alongside thousands of others appearing on smaller
stages and performance areas, receiving extensive television and newspaper coverage. The Festival
was held intermittently from 1970 until 1981, since when it has been held every year, except for
"idle years", which are intended to give the land, the local population and the organisers a break,
usually taken every 5 years. Glastonbury is the largest greenfield festival in the world, and is now
attended by around 175,000 people, requiring extensive infrastructure in terms of security, transport,

SUBJECT 2
Read the text below and answer the questions:
I used to make models of cars, and I knew a lot about different makes long before I was old enough to
drive one. I’d been riding a motorbike for six months before I started taking lessons for my driving
test, and I’m sure that experience helped me. On the other hand, learning to drive proved to be quite
hard. I thought because I knew how a car works it would make a difference. That was a big mistake! I
remember how embarrassed I was when I couldn’t even get the car into the second gear. By the time I
took my test, I felt confident, so I wasn’t surprised when I passed first time. The funny thing about it is
that I haven’t had the chance to drive a car ever since I got my licence because my parents don’t have
one!

1. What does the young man say about learning to drive cars? Why?
2. Do you think that learning to drive at a young age is a good thing? Why?/Why not?
3. Should young people practise in their parents’ car before taking a driving test or rather have lessons

not?

SUBJECT 2
Read the text below and answer the questions:
The main point about sports is that they encourage peaceful competition. I think that’s the basis of the
Olympic spirit of Classical Greece, which nowadays is more important than ever before. Sports can
teach you how to discipline yourself, how to remain focused on what you’re doing and how to apply
yourself to achieving a goal. I don’t think sports are really about the sort of aggression and rage that
we see sometimes in football matches, for instance. I certainly think teachers should discourage any
form of aggression during sports classes. On top of that, we need to be more sensitive towards the
feelings of children who are not fit or good at sports. Taking part in a sports lesson can be a major
source of embarrassment and a traumatic experience for less athletic children.

1. How can one benefit from practising sports?

2. Is there any connection between sports and the academic subjects?
3. Can sports teach objectivity and justice?

Greenpeace movement began in 1971 when the US government planned to carry out nuclear tests in
the Aleutian Islands, off Alaska. A group of North American and Canadian volunteers and journalists
sailed to the test area and began their protest. The enormous publicity created by the protest forced the
Americans to abandon their plans after the first test. Ever since then Greenpeace has been campaigning
against environmental degradation.
As a global organisation, Greenpeace focuses on the most crucial worldwide threats to our planet’s
biodiversity and environment. Using non-violent forms of protest, Greenpeace supporters campaign to
stop climate change, protect ancient forests, save the oceans, stop whale hunting, say no to genetic
engineering, stop the nuclear threat and eliminate toxic chemicals.

Computer games can be addictive, but computer games fans should not be labelled addicts, even if
they admit that their hobby is affecting their social lives. Scientific interest in the computer games
industry has increased in recent years, after teenagers in several countries killed themselves and others
after playing violent games. Various governments have put pressure on the industry to add a health
warning to games packages.
Heavy games players can play on average 17 to 26 hours a week. The online games, in which players
battle with opponents online, are considered the most time-consuming. Children from age of 10 are
now starting to play online games. And this may be a serious threat because this kind of entertainment
offers a new psychological experience.

Lego is a line of plastic construction toys that are manufactured by The Lego Group. The company's
flagship product, Lego, consists of colourful interlocking plastic bricks and an accompanying array of

to construct such objects as vehicles, buildings, and even working robots. Anything constructed can
then be taken apart again, and the pieces are used to make other objects.
Toy blocks and other construction toys might not be as flashy as battery-powered robots or video

for creative thinking, social and language skills. Moreover, kids can integrate their own constructions
into pretend play scenarios.

Some people say that the best defense is a good offense; an octopus, however, would disagree. In
addition to being one of the strangest and most beautiful creatures in nature, the octopus has some of
the most inventive and effective defense mechanisms imaginable. While other animals have teeth,
horns, or claws to help defend them from predators, the octopus concentrates its energy on hiding from
and confusing its attackers. When it wants to get away, the octopus has an impressive arsenal of tricks
at its disposal. The most well-known of the octopus’s defense mechanisms is its ability to squirt clouds
of ink into the water. Some octopi use this cloud of ink as camouflage; after squirting the ink, the
octopus retreats into the ink cloud where the predator cannot see it. Other octopi use the ink cloud as a
decoy. If a large, intelligent predator such as a shark knows that octopi use ink clouds for camouflage,
it might simply attack the ink cloud blindly, hoping to make contact with the octopus inside.

Philadelphia is a city known for many things. It is where the Declaration of Independence was signed
in 1776, and it was also the first capital of the United States. But one fact about Philadelphia is not so
well-known: it is home to nearly 3,000 murals painted on the sides of homes and buildings around the
city. In fact, it is said that Philadelphia has more murals than any other city in the world, with the
exception of Rome. How did this come to be? More than 20 years ago, a New Jersey artist named Jane
Golden started a program pairing troubled youth with artists to paint murals on a few buildings around
the city. From this small project, something magical happened. The young people involved helped to
create magnificent pieces of art, but there were other, perhaps more important benefits. The young
people learned to collaborate and get along with many different kinds of people during the various
steps required to paint and design a mural. They learned to be responsible, because they needed to
follow a schedule to make sure the murals were completed.

In March, news media were flooded with warnings about “facebook depression” in children and teens
which may result if, for example, young users see status updates, wall posts, and photos that make
them feel unpopular. Social media sites may have greater psychosocial impact on kids with low self-
esteem or who are already depressed. The child or teen may think 'They have X number of friends and
I don’t 'or ' They have the relationship status I want or the life I want,' or 'What if I post something and
nobody responds to it or clicks the “Like” button on it?'. Facebook and other social media can
contribute to feelings of depression in three ways—bullying, comparison with others, and influencing
self-worth.

Read the text below and answer the questions:
Practically every teen has been stressed out with too much to do and too little time to do it in. One of
the problems is that so many activities compete for one's time. Having an unfinished project hanging
over them is a major stressor. Teens who manage their time well have their personal favourite tips but
all agree on one important strategy: set priorities, you cannot squeeze in everything you want to do.
Most teens do find that keeping some form of written schedule is helpful. Activities that come at fixed
hours and cannot be changed should be listed first. Determining when to complete homework
assignments and budgeting enough time to finish them is another issue. Some teens stay up late to
finish assignments because they misjudge how much time they take. A golden rule is to estimate how
much time one thinks an assignment will take, then add on another 25%.

1. What time management strategies are mentioned in the text?

2. What time management tips work best for you?

Ole Kirk Christiansen was a poor carpenter from Denmark who started a business making stepladders,
ironing boards and wooden toys with his son Godtfred in 1932. The wooden toys quickly became the
most popular product he sold, so in 1934 he decided to concentrate on making them and chose the
name LEGO for their company. The word comes from two Danish words, ‘LEg GOdt’, meaning ‘play
well’. Coincidentally, in Latin lego means ‘I put together’. In 1949, instead of the traditional wooden
bricks, LEGO started making plastic building bricks which could be ‘locked’ together. However, at
that time, plastic toys weren’t very popular and the bricks were only sold in Denmark. In 1954
Christiansen’s son, Godtfred, redesigned the bricks and global success followed.

Many years later, in 1947, three scientists at Bell Telephone Laboratories searched for a way to

To stay healthy, ecosystems must be balanced. All living things in an ecosystem are connected. If
something happens to just one thing, all the parts of the ecosystem are affected. In order for an
ecosystem to be balanced, the food supply, living space, and shelter for a group of animals must be just
right.
The clover plant, rabbit, and weasel each play a role in the balance of their ecosystem. In order to live,
clover needs sunlight, water, and minerals from the soil. It also needs space. Rabbits need clover so
they can live and grow. By eating clover, rabbits help keep it from taking up space that other plants
need. By preying on rabbits, the weasel makes sure that the rabbit population does not get too big. That
way, the clover is not completely eaten up.

April Fool's Day started in the sixteenth century in Europe. Before that time, New Year's Day was
celebrated on April 1st. Then the Gregorian calendar was introduced and January 1st became the first
day of the year, but many people did not know about it. So those who continued to celebrate New
Year's Day on April 1st were teased and called fools.
Nowadays we play jokes on people on April 1st. For example, someone might put salt in the sugar
container so another person could "accidentally" put it in their coffee. Or someone might change the
time on another person's alarm clock so that person would unknowingly wake up earlier or later than
planned. After we play the trick, we say "April Fool." Then the poor person realizes he was fooled. It
is generally done in the spirit of fun and doesn't cause any real harm to anyone.

SUBJECT 1
Tell us about something you have done and you are proud of.

SUBJECT 2
Read the text below and answer the questions:

People often ask which is the most difficult language to learn, and it is not easy to answer because
there are many factors to take into consideration. Firstly, in a first language the differences are
unimportant as people learn their mother tongue naturally, so the question of how hard a language is to
learn is only relevant when learning a second language.
A native speaker of Spanish, for example, will find Portuguese much easier to learn than a native
speaker of Chinese, for example, because Portuguese is very similar to Spanish, while Chinese is very
different, so first language can affect learning a second language. The greater the differences between
the second language and our first, the harder it will be for most people to learn.
No language is easy to learn well, though languages which are related to our first language are easier.
Learning a completely different writing system is a huge challenge, but that does not necessarily make
a language more difficult than another. In the end, it is impossible to say that there is one language that
is the most difficult language in the world.

1.What makes a foreign language more difficult to learn?

2.How important is it to enjoy the experience of learning?
3.What activities do you like doing during an English class?

SUBJECT 1

Tell us about three important things we need to do in order to make and keep friends.

SUBJECT 2

Read the text below and answer the questions.

Dolphins are regarded as the friendliest creatures in the sea and stories of them helping drowning
sailors have been common since Roman times. The more we learn about dolphins, the more we realize
that their society is more complex than people previously imagined. They look after other dolphins
when they are ill, care for pregnant mothers and protect the weakest in the community, as we do. Some
scientists have suggested that dolphins have a language but it is much more probable that they
communicate with each other without needing words. Could any of these mammals be more intelligent
than man? Certainly the most common argument in favour of man's superiority over them that we can
kill them more easily than they can kill us is the least satisfactory. On the contrary, the more we
discover about these remarkable creatures, the less we appear superior when we destroy them.

1. What social features similar to humans do dolphins have?

2. How much can people learn from animals?
3. What are the most important things to think about when deciding on buying a pet?

Name three outdoor activities you like doing in your free time. Why do you enjoy them?

SUBJECT 2
Read the text below and answer the questions:
Facebook. People either love it or hate it. But one thing we can all agree on is that it sucks up a lot of
time for a lot of people. Sure, it can be an easy way to keep in touch with large number of friends and
family members, but what effect does Facebook have on those who spend hours a day on the site?
Well, according to the authors of a study, Facebook has real emotional effects on users…and they
aren’t good. The researchers kept in touch with study participants, texting them 5 times per day (!) to
find out how they felt, while also keeping track of their Facebook use. It turns out that the participants
felt worse and had less life satisfaction after increases in Facebook use. Something to think about
before sharing this on Facebook (although we hope you do anyway!).

1. What happens if you spend too much time on Facebook, according to the text?
2. Do you have a Facebook account? How often do you check it?
3. Do such social networks have advantages? Do they also have disadvantages? What are they?

SUBJECT 1
Is it important for teenagers to have responsibilities at home? Why? / Why not? Do you have any?
What are they?

SUBJECT 2
Read the text below and answer the questions:
Cuddly robot toys such as Furby or AIBO, the robot dog, have won many human hearts and minds
over the past decade. That may be why Google researchers envision the possibility of turning
such robot toys into intelligent remote controls for home entertainment systems. But the idea of a
teddy bear or doll constantly watching or listening in a home has already stirred some controversy
about home privacy. “There are at least some advantages to an anthropomorphic device taking on a
familiar, toy-like, or “cute” form…” according to the Google patent application. “Some users,
especially young children, might find these forms to be attractive user interfaces. However, individuals
of all ages may find interacting with these anthropomorphic devices to be more natural than interacting
with traditional types of user interfaces.”

1. Has the idea of using robot toys as remote controls at home been accepted by everybody, according
to the text?
2. Would you like to have a robot toy? How would you use it?
3. Describe a toy you had and loved playing with when you were a child.

SUBJECT 1

What do you think are the three most important decisions in a person’s life?

SUBJECT 2

Read the text below and answer the questions:

Today, many people want to learn or improve their English but it is difficult to find the best method. Is
it better to study in Britain or to study in your own country? The advantages of going to Britain seem
obvious. Firstly, you will be able to listen to the language all the time you are in the country. You will
be surrounded completely by the language wherever you go. Another advantage is that you have to
speak the language if you are with other people. In Romania, it is always possible, in the class, to
speak Romanian if you want to and the learning is slower. On the other hand, there are also advantages
to staying at home to study. You don't have to make big changes to your life. As well as this, it is also
a lot cheaper than going to Britain but it is never possible to achieve the results of living in the UK. If
you have a good teacher in Romania, I think you can learn in a more concentrated way than being in
Britain without going to a school.

1. What is one of the advantages of going to the UK to learn English?

2. What is one of the advantages of staying in your country to learn English?
3. Which do you think are the best ways of learning a foreign language?

Explain your choice.

SUBJECT 2

Read the text below and answer the questions:

In 1519 when he invaded Mexico, Cortes first saw popcorn when he met the Aztecs. Popcorn was
important to the Aztecs as food, as decoration for ceremonial headdresses and necklaces, and as
ornaments on statues of their gods. Around 1612, French explorers around the Great Lakes met
Iroquois who used heated sand in a pottery vessel to make popcorn. There is an unproven theory that
an Indian named Quadequina brought a deerskin bag of popped corn for first Thanksgiving feast on
October 15, 1621. Colonial housewives served popcorn with sugar and cream for breakfast. Some
colonists used a cylinder of thin sheet-iron that revolved on an axle in front of the fireplace to make
popped corn.

1. What did the Aztecs use popcorn for?

2. How did some colonists make popped corn?
3. Why do you think that products such as popcorn, chips, doughnuts, pizza have become so popular?

SUBJECT 1

What are the advantages of living in a big city? Name and discuss at least three.

SUBJECT 2

Read the text below and answer the questions:

The Wars of the Roses were a series of dynastic civil wars for the throne of England, fought between
supporters of two rival branches of the Royal House of Plantagenet: the houses of Lancaster and York
(the "red" and the "white" rose, respectively). They were fought in several spasmodic episodes
between 1455 and 1485, although there was related fighting both before and after this period. The final
victory went to a relatively remote Lancastrian claimant, Henry Tudor, Earl of Richmond, who
married Elizabeth of York, the daughter of the late Yorkist king Edward IV, to reconcile the two
factions and founded the House of Tudor, which subsequently ruled England and Wales for 117 years.

1. Who were the protagonists of the Wars of the Roses? Why did they fight?
2. What are the negative aspects of wars?
3. How can wars be avoided?

SUBJECT 2

Read the text below and answer the questions:

Members of the rhinoceros family are characterized by their large size (reaching one tonne in weight)
as well as by a herbivorous diet, a thick protective skin, 1.5–5 cm thick, relatively small brains for
mammals this size and a large horn. Rhinoceros are killed by humans for their horns, which are bought
and sold on the black market and which are used by some cultures for ornamental or traditional
medicinal purposes. East Asia is the largest market for rhino horns. By weight, rhino horns cost as
much as gold on the black market. People grind up the horns and then consume them believing the
dust has therapeutic properties. The horns are made of keratin, the same type of protein that makes up
hair and fingernails. Both African species have two horns, while the Indian rhinoceros have a single
horn.

1. What do rhinoceros eat?

2. Why are some animal species endangered? Give examples.
3. Do people treat both farm and wild animals fairly? Why (not)?
