Case 3: Donemana WwTW (2021)
Relevance to site O: High
Background:
 Donemana Wastewater treatment plant is part of the 35-million-euro EU funder SWELL
project. The site is located on the banks of the Burn Dennet river and the foothills of
Sperrins in co. The project will improve the conditions to the Burn Dennet river and the
surrounding area.
Similarity  Wastewater treatment plant that will bring about environmental
improvements.
 Site is also located near a river.

Difference  Does not suffer from UIDs however current system is strained to meet the
water quality needed.
 This is a replacement/Upgrade of an existing WWTP as opposed to
building a tunnel and making a new WWTP.

Aim of site:
 To build a new more flexible design of a wastewater treatment plant which can support
the needs of the current population and the future population of the next 25 years. The
design flexibility of the project will mean it can be modified easier if the population
strains the new works.

Constraints:
 The construction must be done on this site whilst keeping the existing processes
operational, so the local communities and the other stakeholders are not affected by
the situation.
 To promote sustainability issues such as noise, odour and other disruptions must be
mitigated during and after the construction of the project.
 The terrain of the site was difficult.
 Excavation of pipeline required dewatering and stabilisation, the pipelines also required
additional bracing while it was being excavated and had to be monitored constantly. The
bracing was done with trench boxes or sheet piles.
 Safe demolition of existing structures was required to make space for the new structures.
 Due to COVID-19 the project was interrupted but it was able to overcome the issues
using strict site specific covid 19 risk management plans and use of paperless works, to
reduce the spread of the virus.
Opportunities:
 The existing Works that has been in service for 50 years required high maintenance
costs as to meet the discharge compliance levels and with the higher population needs
the existing works needed to be replaced. The use of modern technology in the new
wastewater treatment works will improve the water quality within the Lough Foyle
catchment and will also require low maintenance costs.
 The new WWTP will be designed to meet the future growth of the population in the Donemana
area to 2042.
 The Project will be designed with Design flexibility in mind so future improvements ad
extensions can be made.
 3D model was used for all design and HAZOP meetings which gave the operations staff the
opportunity to see the project and highlight any clashes or design changes that may need to be
done.
 The Replacement WWTP was designed on the existing site of the old WWTP and the old WWTP
was kept operational, so NI water did not need to make any more land purchases to facilitate in
the upgrade of the plant.
 To promote sustainability and minimize waste, DPW used stone excavated from the Donemana
site to construct gabion baskets which were used to form the retaining walls. 60 tonnes of stone
were reused.
 The stakeholders were informed about the development of the project using public information
events, letters, and progress briefings to the local elected representatives. Other activities such
as press releases in local media and social media announcements were also used.
 The new technology used in the WWTP will accommodate the development in Donemana and
offer improved environmental protection for the BUEN Dennet river.
