Case studyꓽ The Nama matjieshuis


The Namibia people live in the Rightersveld area of the Northern Cape. They build houses
called haru oms in Nama language. These houses are also called matjieshuise, which
means ‘mat houses.’
The Nama people make the matjieshuise from thin branches, which they bend into a beehive
shape and tie together. The Nama people cover the structure with mats, which they weave
from reeds. Matjieshuise are waterproof, cool in summer and warm in winter.
