CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM

This chapter consists the background of the study, statement of the problem,

significance of the study, scope and delimitation, and definition of terms.

Background of the Study

Religion has a long history of revolutionizing the world. It is indeed that religion

made a great impact in the cultural countries, such as the Philippines. Christianity is the most

known religion in the country, it reorganized the different cultural beliefs and practices in

various places. Due to the different religious influence, provinces and tribes around the

country’s practices has been supersede by religious beliefs. Religion is also commonly

regarded as consisting of the way people deal with beliefs practices about their lives and their

faith. Because of religious diversity, cultural beliefs may get set aside by religious customs, it

also influenced the peoples way of living that it almost supersede their cultural beliefs.

In many regions, Christianity has played a role in superseding certain cultural beliefs

and practices. For example, in countries where Christianity has become dominant especially

here in the Philippines, traditional cultural practices related to marriage, celebrations, and

daily life may have been transformed or modified to align with Christian practices.

Religion is also commonly regarded as consisting of the way people deal with beliefs

practices about their lives and their fate after death. It is a collection of cultural systems,

belief systems, and worldviews that relate humanity to spirituality and, sometimes, to moral

values. And because of this, cultural beliefs may get set aside by religious customs. Religion

influenced our way of living that it almost supersede our cultural beliefs.
Religious influences may cause different cultural practices to be reshaped.

Reorganization may rise if these religious beliefs would cover up our cultural practices. Such

as our way of living, practices and cultural belief system. These may happen if individuals

were to focus on their different religious sect, leading them to forget their community culture.

Under the Philippine constitution, Section 3, Article III. The people are enshrined to

practice any belief of religion or practices, otherwise in the contrary of law. However, these

religious beliefs may cause the reorganization of our cultural practices that is very essential to

us, culture practitioners.

In the tribe of Dumalneg, Ilocos Norte, the Isneg Tribe. According to Dumalneg

Elders, many of their practices were already reshaped due to different religions immerging in

the community. Dumalneg only has one religious sect before and that is, Iglesia Filipina

Independiente or IFI. With this having only one religious sect, nothing much would influence

the Isneg’s traditions. But on these present days, due to the rise of many more religious sect, a

lot of cultural beliefs of the said IP group has been reorganized as of today.

The purpose of this research is to know the cultural beliefs and practices that has been

slowly being unpracticed due to religious diversity. By exploring the intersections of religious

beliefs and cultural customs and how these set of beliefs affects indigenous cultural

communities’ practices. This study aims to prove the ways in which different faiths have

reshaped and reorganized the societal norms, rituals, and behaviors across diverse

communities. Through a comprehensive analysis, the research seeks to uncover the

multifaceted dynamics of religious influence on human culture and tradition, offering insights

into the complex interplay between spirituality, belief systems, and collective identity.
