CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM
This chapter consists the background of the study, statement of the problem,
Religion has a long history of revolutionizing the world. It is indeed that religion
made a great impact in the cultural countries, such as the Philippines. Christianity is the most
known religion in the country, it reorganized the different cultural beliefs and practices in
various places. Due to the different religious influence, provinces and tribes around the
country’s practices has been supersede by religious beliefs. Religion is also commonly
regarded as consisting of the way people deal with beliefs practices about their lives and their
faith. Because of religious diversity, cultural beliefs may get set aside by religious customs, it
also influenced the peoples way of living that it almost supersede their cultural beliefs.
In many regions, Christianity has played a role in superseding certain cultural beliefs
and practices. For example, in countries where Christianity has become dominant especially
here in the Philippines, traditional cultural practices related to marriage, celebrations, and
daily life may have been transformed or modified to align with Christian practices.
Religion is also commonly regarded as consisting of the way people deal with beliefs
practices about their lives and their fate after death. It is a collection of cultural systems,
belief systems, and worldviews that relate humanity to spirituality and, sometimes, to moral
values. And because of this, cultural beliefs may get set aside by religious customs. Religion
influenced our way of living that it almost supersede our cultural beliefs.
Religious influences may cause different cultural practices to be reshaped.
Reorganization may rise if these religious beliefs would cover up our cultural practices. Such
as our way of living, practices and cultural belief system. These may happen if individuals
were to focus on their different religious sect, leading them to forget their community culture.
Under the Philippine constitution, Section 3, Article III. The people are enshrined to
practice any belief of religion or practices, otherwise in the contrary of law. However, these
religious beliefs may cause the reorganization of our cultural practices that is very essential to
In the tribe of Dumalneg, Ilocos Norte, the Isneg Tribe. According to Dumalneg
Elders, many of their practices were already reshaped due to different religions immerging in
the community. Dumalneg only has one religious sect before and that is, Iglesia Filipina
Independiente or IFI. With this having only one religious sect, nothing much would influence
the Isneg’s traditions. But on these present days, due to the rise of many more religious sect, a
lot of cultural beliefs of the said IP group has been reorganized as of today.
The purpose of this research is to know the cultural beliefs and practices that has been
slowly being unpracticed due to religious diversity. By exploring the intersections of religious
beliefs and cultural customs and how these set of beliefs affects indigenous cultural
communities’ practices. This study aims to prove the ways in which different faiths have
reshaped and reorganized the societal norms, rituals, and behaviors across diverse
multifaceted dynamics of religious influence on human culture and tradition, offering insights
into the complex interplay between spirituality, belief systems, and collective identity.
Statement of the Problem
This research aims to understand the impact of Religious to the practices and beliefs
of the IP community.
To specify, the question bellow helps the beneficiary to guide our exploration:
This research is made with the aimed to add information and knowledge about the
Influence. This study will specifically benefit the Indigenous People, Students, Teachers, and
Future Researchers.
The Indigenous People will be able to know the positive and negative effects of

they will act and manage their teaching style to the Indigenous people student.
To the Students, the result of this study will help the student to provide insights into
the dynamics of religious beliefs, practices, and their impact on individuals and communities.

This study focuses specifically on IP community which aimed to know the different
religious influences to the cultural practices of the indigenous people. In this study, the
researchers used Phenomenological method to treat the study. The researches will conduct
this study to know what are the possible effects of religion and what are the practices that
have been reshaped due to different religious diversity in the indigenous community, Isneg
Tribe of the municipality of Dumalneg, Ilocos Norte, Region I for the year 2023-202.
The participants of this study are mainly the Dumalneg Elders from the Isneg Tribe, in
reason that the elders have more knowledge about the teachings and practices of Isneg’s that
has been supersede by religion. The participants were chosen through Snowball Sampling
Definition of Terms
For better comprehensive, the researchers defined uncommon words or terms found in
the content of the study. The terms and their meaning are the following.
Reorganization. Refers to the reshaping of the customary beliefs, practices, and culture in
Isneg. The Indigenious inhabitance of the Dumalneg Ilocos Norte, pertaining to the Isneg
Customary Practices. This refers to traditional behaviors, rituals, or actions that are

aspects of an individuals.
Extrinsic Influence. It refers to external factors or forces that come from outside a
particular system or context, shaping it from within, such as the religious practices
