REGIONS FORMS OF ART

REGION 1 (ILOCOS REGION) 1.

Oasiwas Dance (Dance)


Oasiwas is a dance in which an oil
lamp is balanced on the dancer's head
as he swings around lighted lamps
wrapped in porous cloth or fishnet.
The name of the dance comes from
the Pangasinense word for swinging.
The dance is performed by fishermen
of Lingayen when celebrating a good
catch. It is accompanied by waltz-like
music.

Biag ni Lam-ang (Literature)


Is an epic story of the Ilocano
people from the Ilocos region of the
Philippines. It is notable for being the
first Philippine folk epic to be
recorded in written form, and was one
of only two folk epics documented
during the Philippines' Spanish
Colonial period, along with the
Bicolano epic of Handiong.

REGION 2 (CAGAYAN VALLEY) 1.

Bambanti Festival (Dance)


Festival celebrating the use of
bambanti or scarecrows by the
Isabelinos in their vast farmlands to
protect its crops is highlighted by an
agro-industrial trade fair participated
by the 34 towns and three cities of
Isabela.

Giant Butaka (Architecture)


This giant butaka was built in
April 2003 by 25 craftsmen in 29 days.
Christened as the "Butaka ni
Goliath", it is made of premium narra
woods and rattan and measures 11 ft.
4 in. high, 20 ft. 8 in. long, and 9 ft. 7
in. wide. At least 15 people were
needed to carry the chair's feet and
arms during assembly! The Guinness
Book of World Records officially
recognized "Butaka ni Goliath" as the
largest armchair in the world the
same year it was built.

REGION 3 (CENTRAL LUZON) 1.

Banga Festival (Dance)


The Banga Festival is a week-long
event celebrated in the city of Balanga
City, Bataan. It is said that the name
Balanga, which is the capital of
Bataan, came from the word “banga,”
the tagalog term for pot used in
cooking.

Sabutan (Visual Art)


Sabutan weaving is a traditional
craft of Aurora, Philippines. Many
steps are involved in the making of
these placemats - harvesting,
stripping, dyeing and finally weaving
of the Sabutan fiber.
REGION 4-A (CALABARZON) 1.

Kalayaan Festival (Dance)


Kalayaan festival, as the name
suggests, is a celebration of
Philippine Independence. Kalayaan
Festival is a 2 week-long,
province-wide event held annually
from May 28 to June 12.

Vaga (Visual Art)
Our Lady of Solitude of Porta
Vaga, or commonly Our Lady of Porta
Vaga, is a Marian title associated with
a religious icon which depicts the
Virgin Mary as Our Lady of Solitude.
REGION 4B (MIMAROPA) 1.

Mangyan (Visual Art)


Mangyan art is simple symmetrical
organization with equal stress on
vertical and horizontal composition
and an orderly use of lines and spaces
that are pleasing to the eyes. The
simplest form and sample pattern
design of pakudos.

PAKUDOS (Visual Art)


A pakudos is a visual motif used
by the Hanunuo Mangyan people of
Mindoro in the Philippines. Pakudos
are characterized by symmetrical,
aesthetic, and orderly utilization of
lines and space with equal utilization
of vertical and horizontal
composition.
REGION 5 (BICOL) 1.

SARUNG BANGGI (Music)

Sarung Banggi or “one evening,”


tells the story of a besotted man
driven to poetics for the love of his
girl. He ponders his feelings and
constant longing while waiting to
rendezvous with her, “sarung banggi.”

HINULID (Films)

"Hinulid" tells the story of a


woman (Nora Aunor, the Philippines'
most iconic actor) who returns to the
village of Kagbunga in the Bicol
region carrying the ashes of her only
son via the old PNR train, that circles
her universe like the tandayag, the
primordial serpent.

REGION 6 (WESTERN VISAYAS) 1.

ASWANG FESTIVAL (Dance)


Aswang Festival is a culturally
significant celebration in Roxas City,
planned to change the negative
meaning connected to the territory
prominently called space of aswang
by transforming the creature into
Capiz' chief fascination.

Mansala’s Philam Life Paintings


(Visual Arts)
The paintings are a series of 7
commissioned works completed by
Manansala in 1961, the same year the
Philamlife Building was completed,
done in the cubist style Manansala
was known for.

The Bohol Sandugo Celebration or
the Blood Compact Commemoration,
this festival pays tribute to the treaty
of friendship between Miguel Lopez
de Legaspi and Datu Sikatuna,
symbolizing unity and harmony
between different cultures.
REGION 8 (EASTERN VISAYAS) 1.

TINIKLING (Dance)
Tinikling is the dance that most
people think of when they think of
the Philippines. A traditional dance
that involves two bamboo poles and
dancers.

LINGLING O (Visual Art)


Lingling-o or ling-ling-o, is a
type of penannular or double-headed
pendant or amulet that has been
associated with various late Neolithic
to late Iron Age Austronesian
cultures.

REGION 9 (ZAMBOANGA 1.
PENINSULA)
FORT PILAR (Architecture)
The Real Fuerte de Nuestra
Señora del Pilar de Zaragoza, also
Fort Pilar, is a 17th-century military
defense fortress built by the Spanish
colonial government in Zamboanga
City.

SINGKIL (DANCE)
Singkil is a folk dance of the
Philippines that has its origins in the
Maranao people of Lake Lanao, a
Mindanao Muslim ethnolinguistic
group. The dance is widely recognized
today as the royal dance of a prince
and a princess weaving in and out of
crisscrossed bamboo poles clapped in
syncopated rhythm.

MINDANAO)

TOROGAN (Architecture)
The torogan was the traditional
house of Maranao royalties. The
sultan, along with his wives, children
& servants lived on it. However, it was
more than just a residence, it was also
a communal house where affairs of
the community were held.

HIGALAAY FESTIVAL (Dance)


The Higalaay Festival is a
patronal festival held each year in
Cagayan de Oro, Philippines, every
28th day of August, celebrating the
feast day of St. Augustine – patron
saint of the city.

REGION 11 (DAVAO REGION) 1.

THE DURIAN (Visual Art)


The Durian by Rey Mudjahid Ponce
Millan aka Kublai (b. 1974) is a 1,219.2 cm
(40 ft) sculpture in concrete installed at
the entrance of the Davao International
Airport in Sasa, Davao City. It was
unveiled on 15 Mar 2003. The work was
commissioned by AJMR Holding
Company Inc under Alberto M. Soriano
and dedicated to the matriarch Doña
Carmen Marfori Soriano.

DAGMAY (Visual Arts)


“Dagmay” is the handwoven textile of
the Mandaya, made from abaca.
Making it involves a mud-dyeing
technique. The Mandaya women then
weave the fiber into intricate figures
and patterns depicting their folklores
and beliefs.

REGION 12 (SOCCSKSARGEN) 1.

T’NALAK (Visual Arts)


T’nalak is a sacred cloth woven
by the T'boli people in communities
around Lake Sebu, Mindanao island.
Traditionally made by women of royal
blood, thousands of patterns that
reference folklore and stories are
known to the T’boli women by
memory. Fu Dalu, a spiritual
guardian, guides t’nalak weaving, a
process that is enriched with taboo
and ritual.

LAMGE (Music)
Lamge means "to work". Among
the Bilaan, it is a practice to sing
while engaged in heavy work.

OKIR (Visual Arts)


Okir, also spelled okil or ukkil,
is the term for rectilinear and
curvilinear plant-based designs and
folk motifs that can be usually found
among the Moro and Lumad people of
the Southern Philippines, as well as
parts of Sabah.

BONOK-BONOK FESTIVAL (Dance)
Bonok-Bonok Festival, also
known as Bonok-Bonok Maradjaw
Karadjaw Festival, is the yearly
cultural and religious festival and
charter day celebration in Surigao
City, the capital of the province of
Surigao del Norte, Philippines held in
honor St. Nicholas of Tolentino every
September 10.

MADONNA OF THE SLUMS (Visual


Arts)
A key modernist painting in the
1950s, Vicente Manansala’s “Madonna
of the Slums” pictures a mother and
child who are said to become shanties
in the city after leaving their
provincial life.

Madaling Araw is a 1909
Tagalog-language novel written by
Filipino novelist Iñigo Ed. Regalado.
The 368-page novel was published in
Manila, Philippines by the Aklatang J.
Martinez during the American period
in Philippine history.

PANAGBENGA FESTIVAL (Dance)


Panagbenga Festival is a month-long
annual flower occasion in Baguio,
Philippines. The term is of Kankanaey
origin, meaning "season of
blooming". The festival, held in
February, was created as a tribute to
the city's flowers and as a way to rise
from the devastation of the 1990
Luzon earthquake.

SARIMANOK (Visual Arts)


The Sarimanok is the legendary
bird that has become an ubiquitous
symbol of Maranao art. It is depicted
as a fowl with colorful wings and
feathered tail, holding a fish on its
beak or talons. The head is profusely
decorated with scroll, leaf, and spiral
motifs. It is said to be a symbol of
good fortune.

Inged II is a movie that captures
a story of a young breadwinner who
joins an insurgent group with the
promise of getting an easy way out of
hard life to help his sick mother,
never expecting to be involved into a
much bigger scheme.
