Characteristics printables
After reading books on the animal, children can be invited to name the
characteristics as they place picture cards onto the mat.
There are four blackline follow-up printouts available. These can be cut to make a
booklet if you wish.
Younger children are invited to color pages or draw characteristics. Emergent writers
are invited to use lined booklet printout sheets to write the characteristics down by
answering questions.
After completing the task volunteers may like to make a small group report about
their findings.
In my resource library, you can also download printables that describe characteristics
of various animals. Here is a fun activity you may like to try. Lay out characteristics of
two different creatures and invite the children to choose and identify animal
characteristics these two habitants have in common.
Sorting Cards
After cutting cards, draw with a marker or stick dot stickers to the back of each set –
one color for each set. Place the label cards in a row. Explain the difference between
food and predators. Invite the child to sort cards into two categories. After the child
completes the task, invite him or her to flip the cards and self-check. Each card needs
to be under the correct category based on the dot color. Alternatively, use the poster
for the students to self-correct.
Three 3 Part Cards
Children who are learning to read: use control cards, picture cards and label cards.
• Lay out control cards side by side.
• Invite the child to match the picture to the picture and the word to the word.
• Read information cards and invite the child to place them below the
corresponding cards.
• Invite the child to retell the life cycle to you or their peer/sibling.
Confident readers: use description cards, control cards, picture cards and label cards.
• Lay out picture cards.
• Read and find the matching label for each picture cards. Use control cards to self-
check.
• Read information cards and place them below the corresponding cards.
• Retell the life cycle to their peer/sibling.
Student booklet
Print booklet pages on printing paper. Cut pages.
Invite the child to:
• Label each card or dictate for the educator to write down labels.
• Color in parts of the animal.
• Staple pages.
Life cycle line art – supply scissors, glue, and coloring pencils. Invite the student to
color and cut cards and glue them into the correct sequence.
