B. Developmenta
l Activity
1. Presentation A beautiful design is a product of carefully plotted design elements chosen
(3mins) to create a visual presentation of the idea and the imagination.
Design is not about pictures placed together and arranged in a way that
creates a story. It is about creating harmony among the elements and having
them come together in a final product. The principle and elements of design both
carry the same weight in executing an effective piece.
The elements of arts and principles of design are the fundamental pieces
that make up an artwork. Most works of art will make use of many or all the
elements and principles of art.
The elements of art are the building blocks of an artwork: color, line, shape,
form, value, texture, and space. They are the tools artists use when creating an
artwork. The principles of design refer to how those building blocks are arranged:
contrast, rhythm, balance, harmony, emphasis and variety. They are the ways an
artist organizes the elements of art to create a wide range of effects.
ELEMENTS OF ARTS (The building blocks of making art)
1. Line - a path made by a moving point through space. It is a one dimensional
and can vary in width, direction, and length
2. Shape - flat, enclosed ares that are 2-dimensional. Artists use use both
geometrci and organic shape
3. Color - perceived by the way light reflects off a surface. There are three
properties of color, hue (color name), intensity ( strength/purity), and
value(lightness and darkness)
4. Value- describes the lightness and darkness of a surface
5. Texture - describes the surface quality of an object. Artists use both actual
texture (how things feel) and implied texture (how things look like they feel)
6. Space - used to create the illusion of depth within an artwork. It can also refer
to the position and negative space between, around, or within objects.
7. Form - three-dimensional and can be viewed from many angles. Have volume
and take up space.
2. Discussion
PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN (the tools to plan and organize artwork)
(10mins)
1. Balance - the distribution of visual weights in an artwork. The three types of
balance are symmetrical (two sides are the same), asymmetrical (two sides are
different but visually weighted equally), and radial (design emerges from center
point)
2. Contrast - the difference between elements in a composition. This can happen
through a variety of elements such as value change and size difference.
3. Emphasis - the creation of a local point in an artwork. Draws the viewer’s eye
to particular areas of the artwork first
4. Pattern - decorates the artwork with regularly repeated elements such as
shapes or color
5. Unity - means that all elements within the artwork are in harmony. Variety
within artwork elements adds interest to the composition
6. Movement - how the eye travels through an artwork. Can lead the viewer from
one aspect to another within the composition
7. Rhythm- the regular repetition of elements such as line, shape and forms to
create interest and consistency.
3. Guided Activity 1:
Practice Direction: Arrange the jumbled letters to form the correct word. The terms are
(3mins) related to the different elements and principles of art.
1. NLEI - ______________ 6. TUEXRET - ______________
2. TPETANR- _____________ 7. PCASE- _______________
3. NSARCTOT- ___________ 8. HEPMSIAS - ___________
4. HESPAS - ______________ 9. LOORC- ______________
5. RMAONHY - ___________ 10. LEVUA - ______________

4. Independent Direction: Categorize your answers in Activity 1 in their proper classification.

Practice
(2mins)

C. Post Activity
1. Generalization Analyze each picture and try to identify the different elements and principles of art
(2 mins) present in it.

2. Application Draw the following images in your notebook. Then, create a design based on
(10 mins) the elements and principles of arts given in each item. Ask the help of your
parents/guardian to grade your work by checking the appropriate column on the
rubric that follows.

IV. EVALUATION Read the following statements below. Write TRUE if the statement is correct and
(5mins) FALSE if not.
1. The elements of art are the tools in creating an artwork.
2. Most works of art will make use of many principles to have a good artwork.
3. To have a beautiful design you should be an artist with great imagination.
4. The principles of art show how the artist uses the elements of art.
5. The principles of design and elements of art carry the same weight in
executing an effective piece.
V. AGREEMENT The learner will write their personal insights about the lesson in their notebook, using the
prompts below.
