Burning of Magnesium and Ribbon

General Science

To: Ms.Samrawit

Objective: To investigate chemical reaction & know the result of the
chemical reaction that happens between magnesium and oxygen.

Materials & Chemicals used; Busen Burner, Crucible, Tongs, Magnesium

ribbon, Scissors, Lighter.

Procedures:

1: Cut 5 cm of Magnesium Ribbon.

2:Light the busen burner using a lighter.

3:Burn the magnesium ribbon by holding it using a tong over the busen
burner.

4:Put the white ash of the burnt magnesium in a crucible.

5:Bring a red litmus paper and put it in the crucible and let it stay for
two minutes.

6:If after two minutes the litmus paper turns from red to blue that
means that the burnt magnesium ribbon is a basic solution.
Final:- Mg + O2 = MgO

:- MgO + H2O = Mg (OH)2

We burnt the Magnesium ribbon to get the white ash at last ,meaning
we expose it to a high amount of oxygen. After the red litmus paper
stayed in the crucible for about two minutes it turned to blue meaning
the burnt white ash is a basic solution.

While the magnesium ribbon burns it creates light of sufficient intensity

to cause temporary loss of sight. The burning of magnesium in air
produces intense heat which can cause burns initiate combustion in
flammable materials. When we ignite a piece of magnesium ribbon, we
produce both heat and light.
Conclusion: To summarize everything that has been written before,
when magnesium burns in the air emitting a bright white flash and then
combines with oxygen to form basic Magnesium Oxide. Magnesium is a
silver-white metal. MgO is a basic element. The experiment shows that
burning magnesium ribbon air is a direct combination reaction. The
formation of Magnesium Oxide is a chemical reaction.
