LESSON 3: Different Classifications of Assessment

1. Why are the different kinds of assessment classified?

Answer:
Different kinds of assessment are classified in order to better understand and organize the
various methods and purposes of assessment. Classification helps educators and researchers identify
the specific goals, techniques, and outcomes associated with different types of assessment. Some
common classifications include formative assessment, summative assessment, diagnostic
assessment, and authentic assessment. Each type serves a different purpose and provides valuable
information about student learning and achievement. By categorizing assessments, educators can
make informed decisions about when and how to use them to support student learning and
growth.and also the different kinds of assessment are classified to help organize and understand
their purpose and methods. It allows for better analysis and evaluation of student's learning
progress and it also helps in organizing and selecting the most appropriate assessment for specific
educational goals.

2. How does the knowledge of the classifications of assessment help improve teaching?
Answer:
The knowledge of classification of assessment helps improve teaching by providing teachers
with valuable information to assess learner performance and give feedback . This feedback allows
learners to identify their areas of strength and weakness, enabling them to direct their study
strategies and improve their performance .It also defines the levels of achievement expected of
learners and provides evidence for progress decisions, helping teachers make informed decisions
about learners' performance . Additionally, classification assessment measures can be used to
evaluate different learning algorithms and determine their effectiveness in various fields of sciences .

3. How does the knowledge of the classifications of assessment help improve learning?
Answer:
The knowledge of classification of assessment helps improve learning by providing valuable
feedback to learners, reinforcing their strengths and highlighting areas of weakness, which allows
them to direct their study strategies and improve their performance . It also defines the levels of
achievement expected of learners and provides evidence for progress decisions, helping teachers
make informed decisions about learners' performance .

4. Which classification of assessment is commonly used in the classroom setting and why?
Answer:
Classroom assessment is commonly used in the classroom setting. It is a process in which
teachers and students gather evidence of student performance to make decisions about further
instruction and grading. Classroom assessment serves both formative and summative purposes.
Formative assessment is used during instruction to improve student learning, while summative
assessment documents student proficiency at the end of an instructional unit. Classroom assessment
is important for implementing effective teaching practices and improving student outcomes . It
provides essential feedback to instructors and students, guiding and motivating students to be
actively involved in their learning. Additionally, classroom assessment drives learning and enables
instructors to guide students effectively. It also allows for the measurement of levels of attainment
of course outcomes and provides feedback for course design and curriculum improvement .
