You are on page 1of 5

(a) List four additional points about the function of such a table that you consider to

be important. [4]

- The 4 additional points are the “specifications” of the solution you imagine to create
for the given problem - write them as per the context.

Functional:
- Mobile/Portable: It will be easy to carry (But don’t write a story)
- Water Resistant – self explanatory
- Dust Resistant
- Weather Resistant – self explanatory
- Light weight & Compact: It will fit in small places – even pocket
- Multi-Purpose: Can be used in different ways for other tasks
- Easy to Use
- Easy to Clean
- Soft Corners - making it child safe
- Durable/Long lasting: Depending upon the materials used or the way it is built
- Easy to repair/Repairable - depends on the context.

Visual Appeal:
Aesthetic: Feels good to look at
Colourful: Attractive

(b) Use sketches and notes to show two types of construction method that might be
suitable for such a table. [4]

- This question can be tricky, because they can ask you to imagine and draw -
A. Two ways the solution could be made mobile;
B. two construction detail = 2 Joints / Fasteners / Adhesives that could be used;
C. two ways in which the solution could be pushed or pulled or even attached to
something.

And many more.

So here, you need to be able to connect it with everything that you have seen or
done to find the best solutions.

(c) Develop and Sketch three ideas for the table [12]

- You don’t have to come up with completely new ideas only. You can draw things
that are existing in the market or simple ideas from your experiences. They don’t
need to be specifically used for this topic only - it could be something from another
context, but may fit well here.

So, practice a few shapes, and use them in different ways for different
questions that would be perfect. For example a jewellery box can be used for an
assortment of stationery as well as storage of spices. Or even for dry fruits etc.

Some things to keep in mind:

Each idea must be communicated through drawings (not words) 90% drawing & 10%
words. You can draw in different ways/styles to communicate your thought.
Communication is more important - and will build your quality (draw in as many ways
as you can: 3D + 2D + orthographic views + colour pencils + annotations - to give
maximum info - so work on your speed too & quality).
Each idea must:
- Look different (different shapes)
- Work differently
- Must have 2 Materials (not just the classification - metal & plastic - but mention the
type Alumnium & PP)
- Show how the given items (from the scenario) fit into this solution
So, work on:
Shape/Form - how it looks
Function - how it works
Materials - two materials to be presented through colouring / textures / shading
Dimensions (in mm) and an Ergonome (outline of a silhouette): Ergonome is a visual
of a person standing next to your idea - or using the idea (please remember that the
idea is more important than the ergonome, so don’t spend hours drawing the
ergonome.

(d) Evaluate your ideas and justify why you have chosen one idea to develop more
fully. [8]

For each idea give one advantage & one disadvantage ONLY

None of the ‘evaluations’ can be a comparison - so make sure you discuss from the
point of the scenario and the merits / demerits of the ideas.
Your choice cannot be “because i like” or “because it gets more votes” or “because it
is better than the rest”

Choice must be shown using the functional merits for the design problem.

(e) Draw, using a method of your own choice, a full solution to the problem.
Include construction details and major details. [12]

You can choose your own method (to draw - more the styles the better - so improve
your style by adding more to it) - Make sure you communicate your idea FULLY to
anyone who has no idea of what you are imagining..

This question is divided into 3 parts:

1. Fully detailed drawing (Carries 4 marks)
- Maximum styles to communicate (adds to drawing quality)
- Colouring/Textures/Shading gets marks (adds to drawing quality) You may not need
to colour the whole thing, if you are short of time, or not comfortable, then you create
magnifying glass zoom windows to represent your colours and textures
2. Dimensions (Carries 2 marks)
- 3 Major dimensions (Length x Width x Height) and 1 Minor dimension (Radius /
Depth / Material Thickness)

3. Construction Details (2 each): (Carries 6 marks)

A. 2 Joints: Butt / Miter / Finger / Dado / Doevtail / Housing / Dowel / Tongue &
Groove / Biscuit / Dowel Reinforced / Lap / Mortise & Tennon / Pocket.

B. 2 Fasteners (Now there are many types - but if you can practice a few - and also
look at your Project to figure some, then you can try to work with those. Look at some
common types, and use them in your paper, instead of trying to recall any on the day
of the exam.

(Any 2 out of Nail / Screws / Nuts & Bolts / Washers / Anchors / Rivets) If you can
remember specific name for example wood screw or cobbler
nails - that would be perfect.
C. Glues/Adhesives (Fevicol MR - craft glue; Fevicol SH - wood glue or PVA; Fevicol
Marine / Synthetic Glues - Flexible in nature like Latex or rubber solvent / Epoxy
Resins - Araldite or Clear Resin / PVC Solvents)

IF you WANT TO IMPROVE YOUR IDEA FURTHER - YOU CAN DO IT HERE in this
part. Sharing an example of drawing styles to explain the construction details of the
product below.

(f) Suggest suitable specific materials for your solution and give reasons for you
choice. [4]

The materials you choose here, will be specific to the idea you have detailed in part
e. If your materials don’t change from part c, you can name those materials itself
here too.

1 Mark for each material (Specific Material - so NAME is important. Do not be

Generic) and 1 mark for your reason for it - again not because you like it but mention
material property and therefore reason.

Mention 2 materials and reasons for each.

(g) Outline a method used to manufacture one part of your solution in the school
workshop. [6]

Things to remember:
Same as a Flowchart (or Log Chart - which you will do during coursework) you MUST
detail out the process here.

IF you want to use Industrial processes Go Right Ahead - it is okay even if they aren’t
available in the lab

Options to get higher marks

1. If you WRITE down the steps - Then show 8-9 Thoroughly Detailed Steps
2. If you only DRAW the steps - Then show 7-8 Well Detailed Steps
3. If you DRAW and ANNOTATE/LABEL (Non descriptive) same as a comic strip or a
product manual - Then show 5-6 Thoroughly Detailed Steps.

There should be no confusion in your steps - for example, no matter how

obvious it is, it MUST be explained.
