Unit Structure/Format

Use this paper to help plan and get down a rough draft of the information you’ll need for your unit.

Unit title: Painting Exhibition

Description
Students will each create a painting and hang it in the hallway to create an exhibition. Students will work
collaboratively to arrange and hang works but will work individually to create the paintings.

Objectives
Students will plan an idea by creating at least three sketches or test pieces. These can be color swatches,
thumbnail sketches, or written/verbal descriptions of ideas. (Standard 5.9.2.2.2)
Students will create a piece that they are confident in displaying, this will be assessed through their artists’
statements. (Standard 5.9.3.5.1)
Students will hang their artworks professionally meaning they will have a label and be hung level and at eye
level. (Standard 5.9.3.5.1)

Stations
Make as many as you like, but all should include the following information: A description of the station, a list
of all materials students will have access to, a list of any instructional materials that will be at the station, a
description of any questions or learning goals included at the stations.

Watercolor: Set of tables with supplies


Materials:
Cleaning supplies
Paint
Cups for water
Brushes
Paper – watercolor (precut to various sizes)
Boards
Tape
Paper towels
Pallets
Salt
Elmer’s glue
“Goth glue” (Elmer’s glue mixed with black acrylic paint)
White crayons
Masking fluid

Instructions:
Setup and clean up instructions
Color wheel visual (the students will create this)
Visual showing the textures that can be achieved with various materials (salt, paper towel)
Visual showing the effects of various resists (glue, masking fluid, tape)
Visual showing the difference between wet onto wet and wet onto dry
Acrylic/Water soluble oils:
These two stations will be individual supply stations but will be together for the work station portion.
Students can choose to use an easel or choose a seat at a table in this combined section.

Water Soluble Oils Materials:


Cleaning supplies
Paint
Cups for water
Brushes
Paper – Bristol (precut to various sizes)
Boards
Tape
Paper towels
Pallets
Linseed oil
Pallet knives
Gesso

Instructions:
Setup and clean up instructions
Color wheel visual (the students will create this)
Visual showing textures that can be achieved using different brushes

Acrylic Materials:
Cleaning supplies
Paint
Cups for water
Brushes
Paper – Bristol (precut to various sizes)
Boards
Tape
Paper towels
Pallets
Gel medium
Gesso

Instructions:
Setup and clean up instructions
Color wheel visual (the students will create this)

Materials for Installation:


This could be a cart or a small table I don’t think it needs to be a whole center. It also doesn’t need to be
available for the whole duration of the unit.
Magnet tacks
Blue tack
Computer and printer for printing labels and artist statements
Small paper cutter or scissors
Visual examples of artist statements and labels already printed

Demonstrations
A description of the demonstrations/boot camps you intend to do and how they relate to the stations. The
learning objectives, or what the students should learn from the demo/boot camp. Any questions you could ask
the students to keep them engaged during the demo. A list of all materials you will require to do your demo.

5 Minute Demos (and materials needed):


How to tape down a piece of paper to a board and how/when to use gesso (tape, paper, board, gesso, brush)
How to use masking fluid (masking fluid, watercolor paper with some masking fluid already dry, watercolor
paint, brush, water, doc cam)
How to use linseed oil to thin oil paint (linseed oil, brush, pallet, pallet knife, doc cam)
How to use gel medium (gel medium, pallet, pallet knife, brush, scrap paper, doc cam)
How to print labels and hang artwork (entire Installation supply cart, example label and statement)

Bootcamps:
Color mixing/color wheel –
Introduction of color wheel and quick demo on how to mix colors; fill time by asking students how they would
mix colors to paint random objects ex. “who can tell me how we might mix a color to match our chairs.”
Students will then choose a type of paint and each center will create one large color wheel to keep at the
station for reference.
Finally, each student will choose 3 paint sample chips and mix a color to match the chips as close as possible.

Other Standards
A description of all other art history or criticism activities you wish to include in the unit. When you will
introduce it and how. All instructional materials you will need in order to teach these standards. The rationale
of how they relate to the cultural and diverse needs of your students.

This website could be used like a slideshow (maybe minus the one with a weird penis). I appreciate these
because they show a variety of styles that range from abstract to realistic and they show contemporary artists
who are interested in various subject matter.

Watercolor critique – show a few images that were introduced previously and talk about use of shape,color,
and texture

Acrylic/Oils introduction – intro to these pieces by Amy Sherald, Pablo Picasso, and Paul Cezanne
Acrylic/Oils Critique – Show the previous images and talk about use of space, value, and color
