Through the years, measurements have played a vital part in the daily lives of humans, specifically in

making decisions. In the primitive era, many people wanted to compare their things and to know
how long their things are. They use their body parts to measure. Through the years, measurements
have evolved and improved like tape measures and many more.

That’s when people have thought of an idea, this is when the length was first measured with the
forearm. They used their forearms to measure how long was their property, and their house but it
depends on how long is the person’s forearm is.

After the years have passed, measurements have improve a lot. We no longer used our forearms,
hand, finger, and etc. Now we use tape measures, rulers, meter and it is easier to use not like in the
primitive era when they use their forearms to measure how long was their house.

Measurements have always been important in our day-to-day lives, helping us make our decisions
and understand the world better. We have come far, but we should never forget where we began.
Let’s go on a journey to the past to know how these measurements came to be.

Back in ancient times, people don’t have rulers nor tools that we have today. All they have was their
arm, hands, fingers, feet, and their entire body to measure things.

One of the earliest measurements created by men is called a cubit. A cubit was as long as an adult’s
arm, from their elbow to the tip of their fingers. Ancient Egyptians used this measurement to build
things like their houses and the famous pyramids.

As time passed by, people grew tired of using their arms and decided they needed a standard way to
measure things. So, the Greeks came up with the idea of the “foot”. It is a special foot that is as long
as an adult’s foot but was a bit longer than ours. Then the Romans came and introduced the “inch”
and the “mile” which we still use today.

Fast forward to the 18th century, scientists and mathematicians kept improving how we measure
things and decided that measurements should be standardized. The French came up with the metric
system, which includes units such as meter, kilogram, and liter. It made measurement easier, which is
why it is used in most parts of the world, including the Philippines.

And finally, in modern times, we have amazing tools to measure things quickly. We can now use
lasers to measure buildings automatically, we have clocks that tells the time directly, and we have
technologies to measure everything even from the smallest particles to the farthest galaxies.

The history of measurements is like a journey where people from various parts of the world worked
together to help us understand the fascinating world around us.
