1 Scope
This Technical Supply Specification (TL) defines the requirements on materials for ethylene-glycol-
based and ethylene-glycol/glycerin-based coolant additives.

2 Designation
Example of a violet coolant additive:
Coolant additive as per TL 774-J

3 Requirements

3.1 General requirements

Approval of first supply and changes as per Volkswagen standard VW 01155.
Sample inspection, release, and delivery as per VW 50156
Materials sample inspection as per VW 52000
Material conformity as per VW 91101
Before delivering the sample quantity, the contractor must provide the Fuels, Coolants, Fluids, and
Lubricants department with digital versions of all diagrams relevant to the delivered coolant with
regard to the essential physical properties of coolant admixtures (e.g., specific thermal capacities
and conductivities, viscosity or vapor pressure properties, freezing and setting points). This data is
stored in the internal work folder "Produktive Betriebsstoffe" (Fuels, Coolants, Fluids, and Lubri-
cants Used in Production).

3.2 Miscibility
The different types of coolant additives must be miscible with each other in any ratio with all cool-
ants of the same type without any degradation of the functional characteristics. The contractor
must provide suitable verification of this.

3.3 Storage life

The storage life in unopened original packaging is ≥ 3 years at -25 °C to 50 °C.

9 Notes on testing
The requirement "as per sample" is a quality specification of a sample that has been released.

9.1 Water content

Determination as per Karl Fischer

9.2 Corrosion protection

The organic corrosion protection inhibitors (monocarboxylic/dicarboxylic acids) form molecular pro-
tective layers on the metal surface and these layers are completely destroyed by chemical clean-
ing. Accordingly, clean the surface with water prior to the chemical cleaning.
Then rinse the surface off with acetone and dry it in a drying oven for 1 h at 100 °C.
Then (after cooling), weigh it.
After this water cleaning treatment, carry out the chemical cleaning and weight determination as
usual.
Page 19
TL 774: 2021-06

9.3 Aluminum alloys

Replace the Al alloy SAE Type 329 used as per ASTM D1384 with AlMn, AlSi6Cu4 and EN AC-
Al Si10Mg(Cu) (on the chain behind AlSi6Cu4; use a steel ring as a spacer).
Discoloration is permissible, provided it does not represent corrosion products.
Pitting is not permissible.

9.4 Foam formation

9.4.1 Foam formation in the shaking flask

Shake 50 ml of a 33-vol% coolant additive in distilled water for 1 min in a 100-ml shaking flask.
Using the same solution, repeat this test in succession at 20 °C, 80 °C, and again at 20 °C.
Determine the amount of foam immediately after testing and after 1 min.

9.4.2 Foam degeneration capability; testing of filling capability under production

factory filling conditions

Table 16
No. Property Unit Requirement
1 Foam degeneration capability as per PV 1474 s ≤4

Test the development coolant with 50 vol% of distilled water.

9.5 Stability
Deviating from ASTM D4340, use synthetically hard water as per FVV, guideline R5306).
The concentration is 40 vol%.
Deviating from the aforementioned ASTM standard, increase the test duration to 1 000 h for the
testing of long-term stability (only types J and L).

9.6 Temperature curve over 30 h

The test object temperature increase in the dynamic corrosion tests (high-temperature test system)
over 30 h testing must not be more than 10 K, starting after 30 min.
Example:
After 30 min 147 °C
After 30 h ≤ 157 °C

(Suggested dimensions)
– ∅ of approx. 100 mm × h of approx. 260 mm or
– ∅ of approx. 150 mm × h of approx. 220 mm

Fill the autoclaves with the development coolant (50 vol%, balance of demineralized water) to two
thirds of their volume. One third of air must remain above the liquid.
Keep the autoclaves closed during the whole autoclave aging period (do not open them). Docu-
ment the initial and the final pH value for the respective tests (168 h, 500 h, and 1 000 h).
In each autoclave, use a chain as per ASTM D1384. Exception: Omit the ASTM soft solder test
object in this test.
Add a pertinent table showing the metal test objects' weight changes to the test report.
Also specify the oxidation products (acetate, formate, and glycolate at a minimum) of each coolant
specimen after aging.

Figure 2 – Setup based on ASTM D4340

Use 40 vol% of coolant (balance of distilled water) for this test. Use EN AC-Al Si10Mg(Cu) as the
test object material. Set the pressure such that no boiling occurs during the specified test duration.
Evaluate the test objects gravimetrically and visually after the testing. Before and after the testing,
analyze the test liquid beyond the requirements specified in table 18. In particular, document possi-
ble corrosion and oxidation products and the content of inorganic corrosion inhibitors. Excessive
polymerization of coolant components under the test conditions specified in table 18 is not permis-
sible.

9.9 Evaporation behavior, residue formation, and residue solubility of the

development coolant

For requirements, see table 19.

4 Results of the complete analysis Percent by
weight or ppm

Fill a 250-ml coolant specimen (50 vol%, balance of distilled water) into a beaker (400 ml, borosili-
cate glass, high form) and place this into an oven, pre-heated to 200 °C. Leave the beaker in the
drying oven until all the liquid has completely evaporated.
Page 22
TL 774: 2021-06

NOTE: Evaporation refers to the heating of a chemical solution with the objective of separating
the solvent mixture, in this case, e.g., water-glycol, from the dissolved substance. It remains as a
solid residue as long as the substance is not volatile.
After the beaker has cooled down to room temperature in a suitable desiccator, weight it using a
calibrated analytical balance (the beaker must initially be weighed when empty, before being filled
with the coolant specimen). The difference between both weights is the residue content in g of the
250-ml specimen. Multiply the determined difference (residue) in g by the factor 4.
The calculated result is the total residue in g per 1 l of coolant (cold-country concentration).
After the total residue formation has been determined, fill the beaker containing the residue with
250 ml of distilled water and dissolve the residue again using a magnetic stirrer (magnet bar:
40 mm × Ø8 mm) for 1 h, at 60 °C, at 600 rpm.
Then analyze the liquid (complete analysis and physical properties such as pH value and reserve
alkalinity). Present the results in comparison with a fresh specimen.
Document the whole test and the test results with photos.

9.10 Property behavior after defined introduction of fluxing agents (KAlF4)

For requirements, see table 20.

Table 20
No. Property Unit Requirement
1 pH value in the coolant after 24 h
2 Reserve alkalinity up to pH 7,0 after 24 h ml 0,1 N HCL

6 Fluoride content after 336 h mg/l

7 Result of the complete analysis after aging testing (336 h) Percent by
weight or
ppm

Stir 0,3 g of KAlF4 (powder) into 300 ml of the coolant under test (40 vol%, balance of distilled wa-
ter) using a magnetic stirrer (magnet bar: 40 mm × Ø8 mm) for 24 h, at a test solution temperature
of 70 °C, at 600 rpm. After that, transfer the complete test solution (including any sedimented com-
ponents) to a suitable laboratory glass flask, seal the flask, and age the solution in a drying oven
for 336 h (14 days) at 90 °C.
Determine the pH value and the reserve alkalinity after the following steps:
– After producing the 40-vol% solution
– After cooling down in the 24-h stirring test
– After cooling down in the 336-h aging test
Then analyze the liquid (complete analysis). Present the results in comparison with the fresh speci-
men not subjected to any testing.
