Force Suffix Description

Regulars A force made up by career soldiers fighting under the banner of a planet, system, nation, or region
Guards Usually, the best trained Regulars with the highest levels of loyalty; the counter to this is that they are not
often used in front line active services which leads to inexperience and potential nepotism / corruption
Cadre A small force fielded by the premium military academies
Irregulars Auxiliary force with a nonstandard command structure / logistical operation. They are usually merged
elements from different fighting forces. Mercenary forces are the quintessential irregular forces.
Reserves / Group / Legionnaire Usually, a mixture of regular and irregular forces, and often created when a specific force has been badly
depleted, or possibly even destroyed, with its survivors being folded into several other forces.
Partisans An auxiliary force: like irregulars but perhaps less professional or organized. Partisans can range from small
band of highly trained guerillas to a large coherent gang.
Militia / Defenders / Patriots / Volunteers A force created to defend their local system, and exclusively fielded in defensive operations of their local
system. They would only be mobilized for action outside of their homeland in the most desperate of
circumstances.
March Militias The Federated Suns uses regional militia to defend hotspots of trouble / invasion
Marik Militia The Free Worlds League Marik Militia is used to defend the entire nation from attack.
Weight Force Suffix Description
Dragoons Heavy / assault mechs, who are usually made up from the most loyal and elite Mechwarriors
Grenadiers Heavy / assault mechs, who sacrifice speed for fire-power. Usually used to breach fortified positions, or to
break off from the regular conflict zone to undertake special operations such as flanking or objective
capture. Grenadiers are usually the most lauded and successful warriors available.
Cuirassiers Heavy / assault mechs, who prioritize armour and staying power above all else.
Chevaliers Heavy mechs, who utilize a balance of speed, fire-power and armour.
Hussars Medium / heavy mechs, who focus on skirmish attacks and versatility. Like the dragoons, they are usually
made up from the most loyal and elite Mechwarriors.
Fusiliers Medium mechs, who sacrifice speed for firepower, and use overwhelming numbers to achieve victory.
Voltigeurs Light / medium mechs, who are fast and jump capable. They are known for targeting enemy command
units to create chaos in the enemy ranks.
Light / Light Horse / Chevau-Leger Light mechs trained to scout, confuse and / or harass the enemy.
Chasseurs Light mechs who are usually made up from elite Mechwarriors. They traditionally prioritize speed and
firepower over armour.
Velites Mixed tonnage mechs reserved for the rich and powerful of society, they usually operate within the elite
aspects of the Grenadiers or Voltigeurs, and are generally associated with long range skirmish tactics.
Rangers / Jagers Mixed tonnage mechs, who are usually made up from elite Mechwarriors, and are known for their
marksmanship skills.
Lancers Mixed tonnage mechs, who specialize in hunting down and destroying enemy mechs.
Commandos Mixed tonnage mechs, who operate as special forces. Commandos are usually comprised of small groups
(or even one individual), trained for special or covert operations.
Tirailleurs Mixed tonnage mechs, who specialize in speed, harassing, and ambush.
Carabiniers Mixed tonnage mechs, who like to employ short range weaponry and physical attacks.
