THE FIRST MEETING


1. Tujuan Pembelajaran
 Mengidentifikasi fungsi sosial, struktur teks, dan unsur kebahasaan teks report (news item) yang benar
dan sesuai konteks.

2 Materi Pokok
 The text which contains news is categorized as News Item text.
 Social Function of News Item
To inform the readers or the listeners about events of the day which are considered newsworthy or
important.

 The Generic Structure of News Item consist of:


1) Newsworthy Event/ Main Event
It tells the main event which is considered newsworthy in a summary form.
2) Background Event
It elaborates what happened or explains detailed information on what caused the incident. It can
include the background, participants, time, and place relating to the news.
3) Source of Information
In contains comments which can be from the participants, witnesses, the official authorities, or
expert in the events.

 The Language Features of News Item


 Using “Action Verbs” (kata kerja yang digunakan untuk menjabarkan dan menjelaskan tindakan
atau aktivitas seseorang)
Contoh: Hit, attack
 Using “Saying Verbs” (Digunakan untuk menjelaskan kata kerja yang sedang berlangsung)
Contoh: Said, added, claimed
 Using Passive Sentences (Kalimat tidak langsung)
Contoh: Aceh was hit by a tsunami in 2004
 Using Adverb Passive Sentences (Kata keterangan dalam kalimat tidak langsung)
Contoh: The victims were badly injured
 Using Past Tenses (Pola kalimat bentuk lampau untuk menjelaskan kejadian yang sudah berlalu)
