Introduction

Background and Theoretical Framework of the Study

Online and modular learning are types of modality use in distant learning. Online

learning features the teacher facilitator engaging learners’ active participation through the use of

various technologies accessed through the internet while they are geographically remote from

each other during instruction. Modular learning on the other hand is in the form of individualized

instruction that allows learners to use self-learning modules (SLMs) in print or digital

format/electronic copy, whichever is applicable such as textbooks, activity sheets, study guides

and other study materials.

In the recent times the society is forced to practice education through distant learning due

to the pandemic. Online and modular learning are the two modalities selected to be used as the

mode of instruction. The demand of having a clear and smooth conversation between the two

parties involve plays an important role in the driving force of the students to continue their

studies. Hence, everything must be done virtually that the need of good communication between

the student and the teacher became inconvenient. In many ways, effective communication begins

with mutual respect, communication that inspires, encourages others to do their best (Ziglar,

2018).

Back then, both students and teachers are physically present in the classroom where

active engagement and immediate feedbacks are being done. Before both sides could comfortably

ask each other regarding certain topic or issues involves in the learning process inside the

classroom. Through face-face the exchange of ideas and emotional attachment between the

students and the instructor in much easier.

The need of evaluating the teacher’s attitude base on the students’ evaluation is important

to assess the improvement in the learning of the whole class towards distant learning. According

to Myer and Haplin (2002) the level of success on the implementation of virtual learning highly

dependent on the attitude of the teacher involved. These attributes include personality traits,

instructional organization, and the instructor’s ability to make the subject useful. In accordance to

the statement of Semerci and Aydin (2018), attitude can be defined as an element that guides the

behavior of an individual in line with his feelings and thoughts. Attitude has considered as one of

the factor that can result to positive or negative effect on the subject involve.

This study is anchored at the theory of analyzing science teachers’ attitude toward online

teaching, technological competence and access (Rama J., Sabases M., Antonio A., et al. 2020).

Characteristics of effected classroom teachers as identified by students and professionals

(Jehangiri L., and Mucciolo T. 2007. What students want: characteristics of effective teachers

from the students’ perspective (Smyth E. 2011).

This study focuses on the level of manifestation of teacher’s characteristics as

perceived by the STEM 12-A students in online and modular learning and the effect of attaining

these attitudes in the improvement in the students’ performances.

Review of Related Literature and Studies

To prove that the data and information that will be using in the study is reliable and

legitimate, the relation of the level of manifestation of teacher’s characteristics as perceived by

the STEM 12-A students Iloilo City National High School SY 2020-2021 in online and modular

learning will be supported and validated by the following related studies that were conducted

both from local and foreign nations with different style of interpretation and various method of

gathering data and methodology which have a concrete relation and resemblance that can help in

the progress of the researcher’s recent study.

The Effects of Teachers’ Attitudes on Students’ Personality and Performance

This is a preparatory study used to uncover how the attitudes of teachers affect the

personalities and performances of students. With this, the study will provide the proper

understanding of education as well as the dynamics of relationship between teachers and students

beyond the limited areas of classes and courses. This study will prove that a teacher with the right

teaching method and has a great attitude and behavior, provides the students to gain a mentally

healthy personality and to have a clear view of the world. The sample group of this research

consists of totally 353 students from different departments. In line with this, the researchers

handed out questionnaires wherein the students were asked to give samples of their primary

school, secondary school, high school and university teachers’ positive and negative attitudes and

behaviors to tell how it affects their personality and development. The most important findings

Teachers’ Attitudes towards Student Learning in a 1:1 Technology Middle School

Environment

In this modern time, online and blended forms of learning has been increasingly common

in K-12 settings, along with the technological advancement and connected devices. With this the

significance of the study is to understand teachers’ attitude towards the middle school’s one-

laptop-per-student or 1:1 policy. The researchers used a transcendental phenomenological

approach to obtain the data through semi-structured interviews, pre- and post- teacher open-ended

surveys. This study concluded that teachers typically embraced student use of school issued

connected mobile devices in a 1:1 environment. This shows that the pivotal role of teacher

guidance is reprised by teachers’ perceptions of students’ inability to engage in self-directed and

self-motivated learning.

Favoritism in the classroom: A study on Turkish schools

Teacher favoritism is the act of offering someone preferential treatment; the propensity to

favor factors such as a trait they have or their associations, or out of personal interests, for an

individual or party. These qualitative characteristics are seen as encouraging transparency,

confidence, loyalty, involvement, and optimizing the "fit" for successful learning and positive

development. Teachers must establish good working relationships with all their students to pursue

these ideas equally. School partnerships exert a vigorous effect on each other's views of students

and staff. Biases may become obstacles to working together efficiently. Additionally, as teachers

and students connect, intervening complexities frequently occur (Aydogan, 2008).

Characteristics of Effective Classroom Rules: A Review of the Literature

A strong education system is built upon effective teachers. Effective teachers must be

supported by effective policies and practices across their entire career, beginning with preparation

and recruitment, continuing through professional growth, evaluation, environment, and

compensation through teacher leadership. Classroom rules are the foundation for a functional and

successful classroom in any setting. Rules vary from procedures as they determine what the

classroom looks like, what type of behavior is acceptable and encouraged, and help students work

towards a common goal. Results indicated that the two most important characteristics of effective

qualifications as viewed by current and former students for teacher quality preferences. Two

groups were introduced to a new, open-ended test asking what characteristics learners enjoyed

best and least in a teacher/presenter. All 300 subjects provided 2,295 written replies. Descriptive

words were coded and clustered according to similar relationships within the responses, and the

emergence of twenty-one established categories was further condensed into three core categories:

A Research on the Characteristics of the Inspiring Teacher

In this study, it was aimed to find out the characteristics of inspiring teachers who

inspired teacher candidates to do teaching profession properly. Inspiring Teacher Scale (ITS) was

developed by the researchers to collect the data. The results of analysis have demonstrated that

the items loaded on four factors, which reflect inspiring teacher characteristics, (Solpuk -Turhan

2018). As a matter of fact, a successful education system depends on the quality of teacher

training process and the quality of education in education faculties provide to train teacher

candidates (Guven, 2016).

Teacher of 21st Century Characteristics and Development

The Technology plays a vital role in developing these characteristics in a teacher. The

technology changes constantly and becomes obsolete, but the teacher is constant. They drive the

learning spirit among students, day by day, guiding, motivating students to do better every day

and make the to realize their dreams. There is an urgent need that teacher have to work at the

extreme limit. Public education itself struggles with big changes in India, from health epidemics

to economic issues. The answer to these challenge of improving teachers training have great

influence on the student’s experiences which they have in classrooms.

The States must spend more money to preparation programs and teachers themselves must

demand better training. (Hafsah Jan ,2017)

Summary

The following related literature and related studies show the characteristics of teachers in

online and modular learning among senior high school STEM students of Iloilo City National

High School in which the article written by Aydogan (2008), teachers must establish good

working relationships with all their students to pursue these ideas equally. School partnerships

exert a vigorous effect on each other's views of students and staff. Students and teachers are

considered as change agent; they have unintentional and intentional relationships with each other.

Favoritism is a burning issue which occurs in all organizations particularly in educational

organizations of this contemporary world. Favoritism contributes to some hurtful and negligent

actions toward others. Favoritism may become a barrier to work efficiently together. Upon

reviewing various studies and literature, such as The Effects of Teachers’ Attitudes on Students’

Personality and Performance, Teachers’ Attitudes towards Student Learning in a 1:1 Technology

Middle School Environment, and Favoritism in the classroom: A study on Turkish schools we

learned that teacher's favoritism in the class affects boldness, mutual trust, and respect between

students and teacher which results in the student's struggle for favoritism, instead of studies and

academic achievements. Also, it shows that both male and female students have the same

opinions regarding different factors and effects of favoritism.

Furthermore, there are studies like Characteristics of Effective Classroom Rules: A Review of

the Literature, Teacher of 21st Century Characteristics and Development, Classroom Etiquette,

Social Behavior and the Academic Performance of College of Teacher Education Students at the

Laguna State Polytechnic University, Los Baños Campus, A.Y. 2015-2016, National Library of

Medicine; Characteristics of effective classroom teachers as identified by students and

professionals: a qualitative study and A Research on the Characteristics of the Inspiring Teacher

show how to become an effective teacher and how could have an enriching effect on the daily

lives of students and their lifelong educational and career aspirations. We now know empirically

that these effective teachers also have a direct influence in enhancing student learning. Effective

teachers not only make students feel good about school and learning, but also that their work
19

actually results in increased student achievement. Thus, teachers that showed positive attitudes

towards their students have positively influence their personality as well as their life performance.

The most important finding of the study showed that the teachers’ positive attitudes have

positively influenced students’ personality, as well as their life performance.

Conclusion

Therefore, the researcher has made a conclusion that the studies collected have complete

equal division to which eight out of the eight review related literature and studies have made

results that indicate a positive relationship with a teacher can protect against numerous other

negative influences including maladaptive behaviour, negative life events, poor quality child–

parent relationships, and referral to special education settings. It can also predict a range of

behavioural and academic outcomes; not just within the school years, but perhaps also in

adulthood. For example, those with negative student–teacher relationships may be more likely to

be unemployed in adulthood, whereas those with positive relationships may experience a higher

degree of success. The predictive and protective functions of the student–teacher relationship

suggest that one positive relationship may be sufficient to alter the trajectory of a student at risk

of negative outcomes.
