The study also indicated that overpopulation has no significant impact to the learning

process of the student.

Some implementable measures were made which was suggested the government should

plan strict rules and policies regarding optimum population in classroom and provide

sufficient budget to education department for providing better facilities in schools.

This study also aimed to determine if there was a significant difference in the

acceptability of the effects between school facilities and academic performances.

The finding of the study to revealed how the population growth of Senior High

School students increases within 3 years, the changes in the school environment.

It is concluded that the school facilities may effects the learning environment of a

Introduction

Background of the Study

Education is one of the important aspects in the Philippines. It aim’s that all

Filipino have knowledge and educated that our country has a better educational system.

One problem often met by education is the overpopulation. With the increasing

population, the number of students in school is getting higher and the school facilities are

lacking.

According to Nwena (2000) overpopulation as when the people occupying a

given geographical location is more that the available resources. Obi (2005) in his book

philosophical foundation of education page 143, state that urban schools are necessarily

large in size there is usually a serious control problem with respect to overpopulation.

The classroom is one of the aspects on how to assist students in their academic

and pave way to learn. Wherein most of the class activities take place inside the

classroom where the students are seated and can think comfortable. The overpopulation

affected the learning process of the students because of lacking in school facilities. It

gives students a poor academic performance in academic work.

Ijaiya (1999) found a weak positive correlation between the opinion of teachers

and students. Findings showed that over crowdedness diminished the quality and quality

of teaching and learning with serious implications of attainment of educational goals. It

was felt that additional buildings and furniture should give priority in educational

planning at all levels.

Kavita (2002) found that population problem is a matter of great concern and is

closely related to development. The observation of the present study clearly indicates that

the school going adolescent have a low level of knowledge and less favorable attitude

towards population related issues. Adolescent of today are the prospective parents of

tomorrow. They are expected to have adequate knowledge and desirable attitude towards

population issues in general. This will result in stabilizing the population growth in the

country.

One of the particular aspect of school climate that impacts job satisfaction and

student achievement in school building itself. Routinely found in many urban settings,

conditions of the facilities may include, peeling paint, broken windows, non-compliance

with Ameran Disability Act requirements, poor lighting, and inadequate instructional

space. Often circumstances can influence how employees feel about their working

conditions and how students feel about their learning environment. (Marx, 2006)

Statement of the Problem

Overpopulation: Its effect to school facilities and academic performance of senior

high school students.

Specifically, it sought to answer the following

1. What are the populations of Grade 11 Senior High School for the past 3 years?

2. What are the effects of overpopulation to Senior High School students using school

facilities?

3. What are the effects of overpopulation to the academic performances of senior high

school students?

Significance of the Study 4

The findings of this study will be useful to the following entities…

School Administrators. It serves as their basis on how to improve our school facilities

and how to control the overpopulation of students

Teachers. It may help them to know what technique they are going to use in order to

accommodate their students due to the overcrowded classroom.

Parents. It serves as their knowledge of the overpopulation and it gives them an idea on

the importance of family planning.

Students. It serves as their knowledge that causes overpopulation in school and it will

help them to discover their weaknesses through academic performance.

Future Researcher. They can use this as basis on making their own research

Conceptual Literature

Overpopulation in School

A situation in which too many people are there in a certain area, overpopulation in

school premises defined the enrollment rate in exceeding capacity of certain school.

Overpopulation has many hindrances that affect the students on their academic

performances. The example that overpopulation effects the student are the following:

School size, if the students are perfectly accommodating within the school (Swift, Diane

O’Rouke, 2000). Class size, if it is comfortable for them to study-well in their perspective

classroom (Swift, Diane O’Rouke, 2000). The satisfaction of student in schooling, if the

students are satisfied in their school environment (Aina, Stephen Ilcoye, 2015).

The number of student in certain school also affects the school facilities. The

following effects are: Lack of school facilities, the number of selected student that can

only use the laboratory room, computer room and comfort rooms. Space area for school

activities, most of the time student need to practice or perform certain school activities.

Methodology

Research Design

The researcher used secondary data to analyze the student’s perception on

overpopulated school environment and its effects to their academic performance. Also the

school facilities that can accommodate the students.

A descriptive analysis was performed on the sample group to obtain a clear

understanding of the group. The researchers determined means, medians and percentiles

based on the data. Standard deviations will also be determined during data analysis and

reported as well. This quantitative study used correlational analysis, the researchers were

able to determine the effects between school facilities and students’ academic

performances. (Boudereaux et. al., 2016)

Participants

This study was conducted in school year 2019-2020. The sample consisted of 114,

Grade 11 HUMSS students of Barotac Nuevo National Comprehensive High school. The

simple random sampling was utilized in this study. In simple random sampling, all

individuals in a given population have an equal chance of being selected. The population

is not divided into groups or specific classes as the basis of the selection.
