Chapter I
Introduction

Background of the Study

According to George W. Bush Institute, Mathematics
plays a part in students lives. Mathematics literacy
encludes a wide range of knowledge, understanding, and
appreciation of what is capable to accomplish rather than
implying knowledge of its various branches or complex
formulas. It also helps promote critical thinking and
address student difficulties.
Despite different advantages of learning mathematics,
many students, if not all, find it extremely difficult
to learn the subject. Nowadays, Academic Interventions
address the academic problems of a student (Matthew,2019).
Some of these implemented academic interventions in the
Philippines are peer-tutoring and self assessment.
Nevertheless, in spite of the efforts put by the
teachers to improve the students literacy skills, students
continue to exhibit downtrend in their understanding of
the subject.
Mathematics Teachers at Barotac Nuevo Nattional
Comprehensive High School used Variety of interventions to
improve the numeracy skills of students. These
interventions have been implemented but their effectiveness
is contingent on the circumstances of the learners. Thus,
this study aims to address the analization of the level
of numeracy skilss of senior high school learners in
Barotac Nuevo National Comprehensive High school.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to know the level of numeracy of
senior high school learners at Barotac Nuevo National
Comprehensive High School.
1. Is there any significant difference between the level
of numeracy skills of senior high students?
2. What are the hindrance of senior high school
learners in improving their numeracy skills?
Scope and Delimination
This study aims to assess the level of numeracy
skills of senior high school learners of Barotac Nuevo
National Comprehensive High School. We will conduct a
numeracy skill test to senior high school learners of
Barotac Nuevo National Comprehensive High School.

Significance of the Study

The sole purpose of this study is to know the level
of numeracy skills among senior high school learners of
Barotac Nuevo National Comprehensive High School.
This Research may offer empirical significance to the
different sectors namely;
To the Department of Education, this can be beneficial
to the numerical skill survey.
To the School, this will help the school indentify
students who needs to improve their numeracy skills.

Chapter II
Review of Related Literature

DEVELOPMENT OF NUMERACY AND LITERAACY SKILLS IN EARLY

CHILDHOOD
This study examines the direct and indirect effects of
home numeracy and literacy environment and parental
factors (parental reading and math difficulties, parental
education) on the development of several early numeracy
and literacy skills. The 265 participants finish children
were assessed four times between ages 2,5 and 6.5, The
test consisted topics counting objects, number production,
number knowledge, number symbol knowledge, number naming
vocabulary, print knowledge, and knowledge. The test was
conducted to the students individually. Parents
mathematical difficulties and reading difficulties and home
numeracy environment predicted children’s numeracy and
literacy skill development within and across domains. An
evocative effect was found as well; children’s skills in
encountering number sequence knowledge, number symbol
identification, and letter knowledge negatively predicted
later home numeracy and literacy activities. These were no
significant indirect effect from the parent’s reading
difficulties, mathematical difficulties, or parental
education, and the home learning environment from a
complex pattern of associations with children’s numeracy
and literacy skills starting already in toddler.

TEACHERS INTERVENTIONS IN IMPROVING NUMERACY SKILLS OF GRADE 7

STUDENTS IN BAGUIO CITY NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

To address the Philippines’ student low numeracy levels,

this study aims to determine and assess the interventions
employed by teachers to enhance numeracy skills of grade
7 students at Baguio City National High School (BCNHS)
with difficulties in mathematics and the effectiveness of
these strategies. The study paper focuses on a
quantitative method. It includes the use of a checklist
anchored by a frequency distribution table for the
multiple interventions utilized by grade 7 Math teachers.
The effectiveness of the teacher’s intervention will also
be assessed using a Linker scale. The result showed that
the interventions applied by the teacher are as follows:
Conference with parents and student, One-on-one Tutorial,
Redo activities with low scores, Home visitation. As a
result, the effectiveness of these interventions range
from moderately effective to highly effective, depending
on the number of teachers who implement them. The
intervention for enhancing student’s numeracy skills are
reported to be effective.(Girlie D. Layug, Julie Pearl V.

The Impact of Early Math and Numeracy Skills on Academic

Achievement in Elementary School Poor achievement in math in U.S.
schools is a major concern nationwide. Students in the United
States are consistently performing below other countries in math
achievement (Fisher, Dobbs-Oates, Doctoroff & Arnold, 2012). The
United States is falling behind in math instruction which will
impact the future in the global workplace. Students must be
proficient in high school mathematics to be successful in college
level math and science which are crucial for all STEM vocations
(Jordan, Kaplan, Ramineni & Locuniak, 2009). Math is a subject
that builds on itself starting in early childhood. A student who
fails a sixth-grade math course has a 60% chance of dropping out
prior to high school graduation (Ribner, Willoughby, Blair, &
Family Life Project Key Investigators, 2017). In a study in
Delaware, which is reflective of the nation as well, it was found
that 25% of third graders failed to meet math state standards
(Jordan et al., 2009). By the time the same group of students got
to ninth grade, 49% of the students failed to meet math state
standards (Jordan et al., 2009). Our schools are failing in math
and intervention needs to start in early childhood with early
math and numeracy skills. Students are not catching up in upper
elementary and middle school. In fact, more are falling behind.
They need a better math foundation in order to be able to succeed
in higher level math classes and pass state tests.

Chapter III
Methodology

Research Design
This study was made by means of quantitative methods
of research. The researchers tried to solve the problem
and justify and satisfy the study's objectives.
Furthermore, it wishes to know the impact on learning
experiences. This chapter illustrates various methods that
we will use in gathering data analysis which is
relevant to the research. This study will primarily use
descriptive method. This will include areas as research
design, research instrument, the respondents of the study,
sampling techniques, data gathering procedure and data
analysis.

According to interaction foundation design, Quantitative

research is the methodology which researchers use to test
theories about people’s attitudes and behaviors based on
numerical and statistical evidence. Researchers sample a large
number of users (e.g., through surveys) to indirectly obtain
measurable, bias-free data about users in relevant situations.

Research Instrument
The instrument to be used is a numeracy assessment
test. An assessment test which had been given and
approved by teachers namely: Mrs. Julie Lenteja – the head
of the Mathematics Department. Conducting and gathering
data will be done through a survey.

Research Respondents
The respondents of the study would be learners form
grade 12 HUMSS that will compose of 20 participants each
section specifically: Zeus, Aphrodite, Athena, Apollo, and
lastly Artemis who are officially enrolled on second
semester of school year 2022-2023. The participants will
be selected through a stratified random sampling method.
This sampling method could be conducted where each member
of the population has a capability to become part of
this sample. The respondents will consist of 100
respondents from selected HUMSS learners.

The Procedure
The information will be gathered through a numeracy
assessment test which will be conducted by the
researchers during their vacant time. The scores of the
volunteered learners will be recorded individually.

Data Gathering Procedure

Before conducting the study the researchers presents
the topic and wait the approval. The assessment test
will be distributed and administered to the Grade 12
HUMSS learners. Afterwards the data will be gathered and
collected for result analysis.
