answer to each of the questions.
Our elders tell us about the time in their lives when they talked to their father by referring him in the third person
like ‘Does my father want me to go to the shop now?’ This is an illustration of the formal relationships that
existed between parents and children just about 20 to 30 years ago. Compared to this, we see that parents are
much more informal now. We are probably influenced by the Western movies on TV where it does seem that
parents and children are friendlier towards each other. The question is the way it should be.
Compared to Western society, there is no doubt that ours is a more disciplined one. We respect authority and our
families are more closely united. Hence, would we be justified in saying that our method of running our families
is better? If it is better, then the way our parents relate to us must be better. Hence, we are back at the start
point: having more respect and distance from our parents is better than that we and our parents are friends?
As in all things, it seems that moderation is the key here. The best type of relationship between parents and
children seems to somewhere between the two extremes. The Asian concept of demanding only respect from
parents is harmful. It leads to abuse it. It is likely that the Western system of treating children all the way as
friends does not seem to work in reality - though it is so nice to watch on TV. Perhaps a happy medium between
the two: friendliness but firmness where the situation demands it should be a good thing.
