An Attempt at Practically Defining AI
Cognitive System is a natural or artificial system consisting of connected components that process
informational input and transform it into observable output (i.e., a set of systems that interact with the world,
understand, reason and learn)

Artificial Intelligence is a computer engineering discipline — a series of mathematically or logic-based

techniques, uncovering, capturing, coding knowledge, and leveraging sophisticated and clever
mechanisms to solve problems. i.e., a simulation of cognitive processes by means of computer programs.

Machine Learning at its most basic is the

The Right Formula for AI Techniques Introduction

1. Use cases. What are the quickest time-to-value most valuable cases?

2. Skills. Do you have the necessary skills to leverage AI techniques?

3. Data. Do you have the data to address the selected use cases ?

4. Technology. Given the problem, skills and data what are the techniques?
Governance

5. Organization. After a few POCs, where should the expertise reside?

AI Implementations Gotchas
Building AI systems exclusively for experts
AI systems should simplify and augment users’ work
Operationalization
Developing models is academics/operationalizing them is economics
The myth of data volumes
AI and machine learning consume a decent amount of clean and deep data
Governance approximation
Addressing the ethical, stability, trustworthiness, and accountability of AI systems
Team sport
Leaving data science and AI to data scientists and AI experts only
The AI ivory tower
AI is a small (be disproportionately critical) part of a much larger ecosystem

Practical Recommendations on How to Start …

Engage the business:

– Identify at least three separate business initiatives (through measurable use
cases) that can benefit from AI techniques.
While going through the 5 steps, use a pragmatic approach:
– Be pragmatically bold (think big).
– Experiment with quick time-to-value solutions (start small).
– Start now — learn, redirect and beware of the scope creep (act fast).
Respect the impact on people:
– The impact of software and robots on employment, work and careers of
people will be profound.
– Work does not have to be conceived as a zero-sum game — disruption is
often about augmented intelligence.
