1. Bhartiya Bhasha Utsav


● About: A 75-day-long event celebrating Indian languages that commenced
on September 28, 2023, in Lucknow.
● Participants: Padma Shree awardees and representatives from various
Indian languages.
● Highlight: A multi-language conference called Bahubhashi Sangoshthi and
a play based on the epic Ramayana.
● Duration: It will be organised from September 28 to December 11, which
coincides with the birthday of the famous Tamil poet Subrahmanyam
Bharti, celebrated as Indian Languages Day.

2. Waheeda Rehman to be given Dadasaheb Phalke


Lifetime Achievement Award 2023
● Veteran actor Waheeda Rehman has been chosen to receive the Dadasaheb
Phalke Lifetime Achievement Award in 2023.

● About: A prestigious honour named after the father of Indian cinema,
Dadasaheb Phalke.
● Aim: To recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to

3. Hoysala temples in Karnataka

Hoysalas
● Origin: The Hoysalas began as provincial
governors under Western Chalukyas & held
power in Karnataka from 10th - 14th century.
● Coming to power: The dynasty came to power
when the two dominant empires of the South,
the Western Chalukyas and the Cholas
crumbled.
● Capital: Initially located at Belur, but was later moved to Halebidu(or
Dwarasamudra).

● Construction: During the 12th to 13th centuries

● Remarkable architecture: They are renowned for their remarkable
architecture and showcase the sculptural and artistic achievements of the
Hoysala dynasty.
● Designated UNESCO site: The decision to include this site was made during
the 45th session of the World Heritage Committee in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
● Use of soapstone: A malleable stone that is easy to carve due to which
intricate sculptures (animals, scenes of daily life, depictions from the epics
and the Puranas) were made on the temple walls.
● Platform: Generally built on stellate (star-shaped) platforms.
● Amalgamation of 3 distinctive styles: Dravidian, Vesara and the North Indian
Nagara style
● ‘Signed’ sculptures: The sculptors, masons leave behind their names, and
sometimes a few more details.

4. Shantiniketan
● Shantiniketan has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage list as
announced by UNESCO on September 18, 2023.
● This decision was made during the 45th session of the World Heritage
Committee held in Saudi Arabia.
● Shantiniketan
○ Establishment: 1901 by Maharshi Debendranath Tagore, the father of
Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore.
○ Location: Birbhum district of West Bengal, India.
○ Original Theme: It was originally as a residential school and an art
centre.
○ Evolved into a ‘world university’: SInce 1921, it came to be known as
“Visva Bharati,” emphasizing the unity of humanity.

5. Ganesh Chaturthi - September 19, 2023.


● About: A Hindu festival celebrating Lord Ganesha, the god of prosperity and
wisdom.
● Celebration: Starts on the fourth day/ chaturthi of the Hindu month of
Bhadrapada (August or September).

6. Sangeet Natak Akademi Amrit Awards


● The Ministry of Culture awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Amrit Awards
to 84 performing artists in New Delhi. The special achievement award was
given to artists above the age of 75 from all over India who had not been
bestowed with any national honour yet.

● About: A national honour bestowed on performing artists as well as
teachers and scholars in the field of performing arts.
● Selection of recipients: By the Akademi’s General Council.
● Akademi’s General Council: Comprises distinguished musicians, dancers,

Government of India, state governments, and Union Territories.
● Prize money: Rs. 1,00,000/- (Rupees one lakh) besides Tamrapatra and
Angavastram.
● Aim: To honour Indian artists aged above 75 years who have not been
accorded any national honour in their career so far.
Sangeet Natak Akademi
● About: India's national academy of music, dance and drama.
● Institution: Created by a resolution of the Ministry of Education, with P.V.
Rajamannar as its first Chairman.
● Establishment: In 1953
● Aim: Preservation and promotion of the vast intangible heritage of India’s
diverse culture expressed in forms of music, dance and drama.
● Nodal Ministry: Ministry of Culture.
● Chairman: Appointed by the President of India for a term of five years.
● Funding: Fully funded by the Government for the implementation of its
schemes and programmes.

7. 48th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF)


● The 48th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) started on September 7
and will end on September 17, 2023. This year, the festival features a diverse
selection of films from different genres, languages, and countries, including
seven Indian films that highlight the talent and creativity of Indian cinema.
● Prithul Kumar to lead India:
○ India's official delegation at TIFF was led by Prithul Kumar, Joint
Secretary (Film), Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and
Managing Director, National Film Development Corporation (NFDC).
○ NFDC: Central agency of the Ministry of Information and
Broadcasting, which is organising India's participation in TIFF.

8. World’s tallest Nataraja statue


● The world’s tallest Nataraja statue has been installed at Bharat Mandapam,
the venue of the G20 summit 2023 in Delhi.
About the statue
● Dimensions: 28- foot-tall & weighing 20 tonnes
● Material used: The Nataraja statue was built in Ashtadhatu (8 metals) using
the traditional casting method.

9. M. Rajeshwar Rao
● M. Rajeshwar Rao has been reappointed as Deputy Governor of the Reserve
Bank of India (RBI). The reappointment is for a period of one year, starting
from the 9th of the next month or until further orders, whichever comes
earlier.

10. Sovereign Gold Bond Scheme 2023-24 Series II


opens until 15 September
● Sovereign Gold Bonds (SGB) are open for subscription until September 15th,
marking the second series of the scheme for the fiscal year 2023-24.
● The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has set the price of the gold bonds at 5,923
rupees per gram.
● Online applicants will receive a discount of 50 rupees per gram less than the
nominal value when paying digitally, making the issue price for online
investors 5,873 rupees per gram.
● The minimum investment allowed in a gold bond is one gram, while the
maximum subscription limit is set at 4 kg for individuals and 20 kg for trusts
and similar entities per fiscal year.
● SGB offers a safer alternative to physical gold and an additional income
source, making it an attractive investment option.
● Sovereign Gold Bond Scheme: Initiated by the government in November
2015, under the Gold Monetisation Scheme.

11. RBI Gradually Reduces Incremental Cash Reserve


Ratio (ICRR) to Manage Liquidity
● The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will gradually reduce its requirement for
banks to park an additional 10% of their fresh deposits with the central bank.
The reduction of this requirement, known as the incremental cash reserve
ratio (ICRR), will occur in stages.
○ Starting on 9 September 2023, 25% of the ICRR will be released.
○ Another 25% will be released on 23 September.
○ The remaining 50% of the ICRR will be released on 7 October.
Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR)
● About: A percentage of total deposits (currently, stands at 4.5%) that the
banks have to maintain as liquid cash with the RBI.
● Aim: To ensure that the banks never run out of cash to cater to the payment
demands of depositors.

● A safety net for depositors: The banks cannot use this amount for lending
or for any investment purposes.
Incremental Cash Reserve Ratio (ICRR)
● About: An additional cash balance which the RBI can ask banks to maintain
over and above the CRR - for a specific period.
● RBI Directives: Banks will have to maintain an I-CRR of 10% on the increase
in their net demand and time liabilities (NDTL) between May 19, 2023, and
July 28, 2023.
● NDTL: Total demand and time liabilities (deposits) of the public that are held
by the banks with other banks.

12. New UPI Payment Options Launched by NPCI


for Inclusive Digital Payments
● On September 7, 2023, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI)
introduced several new payment options on the Unified Payment Interface
(UPI). The RBI Governor announced these options at the ongoing Global
Fintech Festival in Mumbai. The new options are:
○ Hello! UPI for voice-enabled payments.
○ Credit Line on UPI for instant loans.
○ UPI LITE X for low-cost smartphones.
○ Tap & Pay for contactless payments.
● Aim: To create an inclusive, resilient, and sustainable digital payments
ecosystem and contribute to UPI’s goal of achieving 100 billion transactions
per month.
National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI)
● About: An umbrella organisation for operating retail payments and
settlement systems in India.
● Initiated by: Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Indian Banks’ Association
(IBA) under the provisions of the Payment and Settlement Systems Act,
2007, to create a robust Payment & Settlement Infrastructure in India.
● Incorporation: As a “Not for Profit” Company under the provisions of Section
25 of Companies Act 1956 (now Section 8 of Companies Act 2013).
● Payment systems that the NPCI can operate in: National Financial Switch
(NFS), Immediate Payment System (IMPS), Aadhaar-enabled Payments
System (AEPS) and National Automated Clearing House (NACH).

13. ‘Ek Tareekh, Ek Ghanta, Ek Saath’ Campaign


● ‘Ek Tareekh, Ek Ghanta, Ek Saath’ Campaign is a mega cleanliness drive
organised to commemorate Gandhi Jayanti. The cleanliness drive is
scheduled for October 1st, Sunday, at 10 am.

● About: A massive voluntary effort for cleanliness in India, endorsed by
Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
● Aim: It encourages citizens to engage in one hour of “shramdaan” (voluntary
labour) for cleanliness at 10 am on October 1st as a tribute to Mahatma
Gandhi.
● Swachhata Pakhwada 2023: Theme - “Garbage Free India,” is organised
alongside this initiative.
● Significance: It implies Environmental Consciousness, Community
Engagement, Environmental Stewardship and Social Responsibility.

14. PM Vishwakarma Scheme for Empowering


Traditional Artisans and Craftspeople
● The Prime Minister recently launched the “PM Vishwakarma” scheme on
September 17, 2023, in New Delhi.
About the Scheme
● Aim: To support and promote traditional crafts and artisans.
● Centrally funded: It will be fully funded by the Union Government with an
allocation of Rs 13,000 crore.
● Vishwakarmas:
○ Artisans/ Vishwakarmas, will be registered for free through Common
Services Centres using a biometric-based portal.
○ They will receive recognition through a certificate and ID card, skill
training, a toolkit incentive of Rs 15,000, and collateral-free credit
support at concessional interest rates.
● Focus: On preserving the Guru-Shishya parampara and improving the
quality and reach of artisanal products and services.
● Coverage: 18 traditional crafts, including carpentry, blacksmithing, pottery,
weaving, and more in both rural and urban artisans across India.
● Significance: It will incentivize digital transactions and provide marketing
support to artisans and craftspeople.

15. Cabinet Approves extension of PM Ujjwala


Yojana for three years
● The Government has approved expansion of PM Ujjwala Yojana, to provide
support for LPG connections to women on 13th September 2023 during a
cabinet meeting.
PM Ujjwala Yojana
● Aim: To release a total of 75 lakh LPG connections over a period of three
years, from the Financial Year 2023-24 to 2025-26.
● Financial cost: One thousand 650 crore rupees.
● Provisions:

○ 75 lakh free LPG connections to women from poor and needy families
to enable them to benefit from the Ujjwala scheme.
● Ujjawala 2.0:
○ The first refill and stove will also be provided free of cost to Ujjwala
beneficiaries.

16. Mera Bill Mera Adhikaar : Invoice incentive


scheme
● The invoice incentive scheme - Mera Bill Mera Adhikaar begins on 1
September 2023 to bring a cultural and behavioural change in the general
public to ask for a Bill as their right and entitlement.

● About: A Goods and Services Tax (GST) invoice incentive programme that
offers cash incentives for uploading invoices.
● Pilot scheme: Initially introduced in Assam, Gujarat, and Haryana, the UTs
of Puducherry, Daman & Diu, and Dadra & Nagar Haveli.
● Aim: To encourage customers to request a bill whenever they make
purchases.
● Mechanism:
○ Eligibility: All invoices issued by GST-registered suppliers to
consumers will be eligible for the scheme.
○ Monthly and quarterly draws: Winners will be eligible for cash reward
prizes beginning from Rs 10,000 to up to Rs 1 crore.
○ Minimum purchase value for the invoice to be considered for the
lucky draw: Rs 200, and individuals can upload a maximum of 25
invoices in a month.
● Condition: The invoice uploaded on the app should have the GSTIN of the
seller, invoice number, amount paid and tax amount.

17. World Tourism Day : 27 September


● The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) established this
observance in 1980. The choice of September 27th for World Tourism Day is
linked to the adoption of the UNWTO’s Statutes on that day in 1970.
○ Its purpose is to raise awareness about the importance of tourism
and its various impacts: social, cultural, political, and economic.
○ The goal is to promote sustainable and responsible tourism practices
worldwide.
○ Tourism contributes significantly to the global economy by creating
jobs, fostering economic growth, and promoting sustainable
development.
○ The theme for World Tourism Day 2023 is ‘Tourism and green
investment,’ emphasising the need for targeted investments to
achieve sustainable development goals.

18. Hindi Diwas : September 14


● To commemorate the adoption of Hindi as India’s official language by the
Constituent Assembly in 1949.
● First Hindi Diwas: 1953.

19. Teachers Day : 5 September


● To honour the teachers and their contribution to society. The date marks
the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, an Indian scholar,
philosopher and the first Vice President of India.
● Awarded the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian honour in India, in 1954.

20. India-UN Capacity Building Initiative for Global


South
● Launched on September 24, 2023.
● Objective: To share India’s development experiences, best practices, and
expertise with partner countries in the Global South through capacity
building and training programs.
● Announced at the India-UN for the Global South event in New York.
● It will work towards achieving the development-related goals of India’s G20
Presidency like the G20 Action Plan for Accelerating Progress on the
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), technological transformation, and
the establishment of Digital Public Infrastructure.

21. PM Modi inaugurate two day International


Lawyers Conference in New Delhi
● Theme: “Emerging Challenges in the Justice Delivery System.”
● Organised by: Bar Council of India for the first time.
● Key topics for discussion: Emerging legal trends, challenges in cross-border
litigation, legal technology, and environmental law.
● Aim:
○ To facilitate meaningful dialogue and discussion on legal topics of
national and international significance.
○ To promote the exchange of ideas and experiences and enhance
international cooperation and understanding on legal issues.

22. Recent Tensions and Diplomatic Expulsions in


India-Canada Relations
● Recently, India expelled a senior Canadian diplomat in response, and
Canada expelled an Indian diplomat.
● Tensions escalated after the Canadian Prime Minister hinted at a link
between the Indian government and the killing of Sikh separatist leader
Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
● The tensions are centred around the Sikh independence movement, known
as the Khalistan movement.
● India has accused Canada of sheltering Khalistani activists.

(IPACC) from 26 to 27 September 2023 at the

● Edition: 13th biennial IPACC and is being hosted by both the Indian Army
and the US Army Pacific.
● Hosts: General James C McConville, the Chief-of-Staff of the US Army, &

● Key topics to be discussed: Role of military diplomacy in crisis mitigation,
enhancing collaboration and interoperability, and the importance of self-
reliance for modern armies.

New Delhi

● 18th G20 Summit: It concluded in New Delhi on September 10, 2023, with
India passing the Presidency to Brazil.
● India addressed various global issues: UNSC reforms, the mandate of
Multilateral Development Banks, and the regulation of cryptocurrencies.
● Initiatives by India: Including the African Union in the G20, launching the
Global Biofuel Alliance, and promoting economic integration through
initiatives like the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor.

(IMEC): A Key Initiative for Regional Connectivity

● A collaborative initiative involving India, the European Union, and six other

● Theme: ‘ASEAN Matters: Epicentrum of Growth.’
● India presented a 12-point proposal for strengthening India-ASEAN
cooperation, covering various aspects, including connectivity, digital
transformation, trade, and addressing global challenges.

● About: It is a regional grouping that aims to promote economic and security


cooperation among its members.
● Ten members: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the
Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
● Establishment: 8 August 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand, with the signing of the
ASEAN Declaration (Bangkok Declaration).
● Founding fathers: Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.
● Motto: “One Vision, One Identity, One Community”.
● Secretariat: Jakarta, Indonesia.
● Significance: ASEAN countries have a total population of 662 million people
and a combined gross domestic product (GDP) of $3.2 trillion as of 2022.

27. Indian-origin Tharman Shanmugaratnam has
been elected President of Singapore
● Indian-origin Tharman Shanmugaratnam, a renowned economist and
former deputy prime minister of Singapore, has been elected as the next
president of Singapore.
● He is the third individual of Indian origin to assume this prestigious role in
the prosperous city-state, and his tenure will extend for the next six years.

28. Sankalp Saptaah, a week-long programme for


Aspirational Blocks
● Prime Minister recently launched a week-long programme called Sankalp
Saptaah in New Delhi on September 30, 2023.
● It took place at Bharat Mandapam in the National Capital and saw the
participation of approximately three thousand panchayat and block-level
people’s representatives and functionaries from across the country.

● It is linked to the effective implementation of the Aspirational Blocks
Programme (ABP).
● Aim: To implement the ABP and prepare an effective block development
strategy, “chintan shivirs” were organized at village and block levels across
the country. The Sankalp Saptah is the culmination of these chintan shivirs.
● Observed in all 500 aspirational blocks.
● Themes for the first six days: “Sampoorna Swasthya”, “Suposhit Parivar”,
“Swachhta”, “Krishi”, “Shiksha”, and “Samridhi Diwas”.
● End day theme: “Sankalp Saptah – Samavesh Samaroh”.
Aspirational Blocks Programme (ABP)
● Launched on January 7, 2023, on the lines of the Aspirational District
Programme ( launched in 2018) and covers 112 districts across the country.
● Aim: Enhancing governance and improving the quality of life in 500
Aspirational Blocks spanning 329 districts across India.
● Majorly covers 6 states: Uttar Pradesh (68 blocks), Bihar (61), Madhya
Pradesh (42), Jharkhand (34), Odisha (29) and West Bengal (29).

29. Best Smart City in India : Indore


● Awarded on September 27, 2023, during the India Smart Cities Conclave
2023.
● Fourth edition of the India Smart Cities Award Contest (ISAC) 2023.
● India Smart Cities Conclave 2023 took place on September 2627, 2023, at
the Brilliant Convention Centre in Indore, Madhya Pradesh.
● Organized by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) and saw
participation from all 100 smart cities in India.
● It served as a platform for cities to showcase their noteworthy
achievements under the Smart Cities Mission and contribute to the future
urban transformation of the country.

Letters in Rozgar Mela
● The distribution of appointment letters will take place during a Rozgar Mela
(employment fair) held at 46 locations across the country.
● The Rozgar Mela is expected to play a pivotal role in creating more

○ A rear ramp door for quick reaction and para-dropping of troops and
cargo.

35. India’s First Lighthouse Festival in Goa from 23

● Inaugurated at Fort Aguada Lighthouse.

● Celebrated at lighthouses across the country to promote them as tourist
destinations.
● Campaign ‘Lighthouse Heritage Tourism’ was launched to transform 75
historic lighthouses into tourist spots.

economies.
● Activities: Dance performances, food stalls, music concerts, and discussions
on marine history.

36. SIMBEX
● An annual bilateral exercise between the Indian Navy and the Republic of
Singapore Navy.
● From September 21 to September 24, 2023.
● Aim: To enhance interoperability and mutual understanding between the
two navies.
● 2 phases:
○ Harbour Phase: This phase involves professional interactions, cross-
deck visits, Subject Matter Expert Exchanges, and sports fixtures.
○ Sea Phase: During this phase, various maritime operations are
conducted, including air defence exercises, gunnery firing, and anti-
submarine exercises.
● Indian Navy participants: Ranvijay, Kavaratti, and Sindhukesari, along with
Long- Range Maritime Patrol Aircraft P81.
● Longest-running naval exercise that the Indian Navy conducts with any
other country.

● The “disturbed area” status under AFSPA will continue to apply to all the hill
districts, which are predominantly inhabited by tribal communities.
● However, the act has gradually been withdrawn from valley districts since
2022 due to improved security conditions.

operating from Myanmar, advocating for the secession of Manipur from
