Reasons for Vulnerability of Nurses to COVID-19 Disease

Donnah Vil P. Ugat
ENGL 5 NH

Introduction

A. As of 30 August 2020, thirty-four (34) percent of 7,006 total

confirmed COVID-19 cases among health care workers were nurses.

B. The nurses are vulnerable to COVID-19 disease for two reasons.

Discussion

A. The lack of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) makes the

nurses vulnerable to COVID-19 disease.

Evidence: The initial lack of personal protective equipment (PPEs) led

to medical workers succumbing to COVID-19, which has so far infected
at least 63 nurses while in line of duty.

B. Longer working hours make the nurses vulnerable to COVID-19

disease.

Evidence: During the pandemic, nurses from Lung Center of the

Philippines had 12-hour shifts which exceeds the normal work shifts of
8 hours giving them prolonged exposure with infected patients.

Conclusion

A. The vulnerability of nurses to COVID-19 disease manifests due to lack

of Personal Protective Equipment and longer working hours.

B. Nurses must be given the protection and support for our nurses, our
front line-warriors against the Covid-19 pandemic.
