• Primary transferring unit
The primary transferring unit uses a 600-dpi thermal line scan head, which is installed near the inked ribbon.
It transfers ink from the inked ribbon to the transfer film while moving the inked ribbon and transfer film.
This mechanism is called thermal transferring. The inked ribbon uses dye-sublimation (CMY: cyan, magenta,
yellow) for printing-colored images, pigment-sublimation (K: black), a heat seal, a stripping section, and a UV
unit.

• Secondary transferring unit

The secondary transferring unit uses a heat roller to transfer images from the transfer film to the cards. This
mechanism is also called thermal transferring.

• Card feeder unit

The card feeder is installed in the upper portion of the printer. Cards are stacked horizontally with the surface
(printing surface) of the cards facing the left side of the printer. Users can load a maximum of 250 cards
(thickness: 0.76 mm) at once.
The card feeder is a detachable cartridge, so it is easy to attach or detach it during printing. The cartridge
allows user to refill cards when it is attached to or detached from the printer.

• Cleaning unit
The cleaning unit removes dust and dirt by touching the cleaning roller to the cards.
The cleaning roller collects dust and dirt that is removed from the cards, and the cleaning tape removes
them from the cleaning roller.
Periodic maintenance of the cleaning tape will ensure cleaning function stability.

• Flip card unit

Functions of the flip section include taking in cards from card feeder, delivering cards to the secondary
transferring unit, transferring cards to optional units, and ejecting rejected cards.

• Decurl unit
The de-curling unit flattens warped cards delivered to the secondary transferring unit.

• Card ejection units

The printer has two card ejecting units: one on the left (card ejecting unit 1) and one on the lower right (card
ejecting 2). You can change the settings to choose which one will receive normally printed cards and which
one will receive mistakenly ejected cards. The default setting for the units has card ejecting unit 1 receives
normally ejected cards a n d card ejecting unit 2 receive mistakenly ejected cards.

• Unit for mounting optional parts

This unit accepts the magnetic R/W unit, R/W unit for various non-contact IC cards (e.g., Mifare and Felica),
and the contact R/W unit.

• RFID Key holder

It controls the type and consumed amount of ink ribbon through communication with ID-key attached to the
ink ribbon.

• Print head
The Printhead is heated to transfer the Ink Ribbon's ink to the Transfer Film to form images.

Cassette Handling Good Practices

Avansia cassettes must be handled with care because cassettes play a very important role in
print and lamination quality.

Cassettes have reference posts that must remain in original position:

Otherwise, when a reference post is torn, it can create used roll winding issues: badly spun used roll will
pull ribbon/film unevenly which will make film/ribbon crease.
For instance, creased ribbon generates colored wrinkles and creased film generates clear wrinkles.
Basically, good practice for cassette handling consists in making sure cassette reference posts remain in
original position when storing or manipulating the cassettes.

Control description
The up and down operation is controlled by the Platen Lift Motor (DM5).
In addition to the Primary Transfer Feed Roller (Platen Roller), the Platen Lift Motor (DM5) also
controls the up and downmovement of the Film Nip Roller.
1. Up position: Primary Transfer Roller (Platen Roller) upward (release (uppermost)), Film Nip Roller

Ink Ribbon

Overview

Control description
Panel configuration: There are two types, a YMCK four panel configuration and a YMCKK five panel
configuration. Regarding position control of the Ink Ribbon, resolution is calculated by measuring the
number of clock occurrences from the Ribbon Feed Length Sensor (Wind Up Axis and Supply Axis, SN10
and SN11 - respectively), generated at the time when it passes through the K panel detected by the
Ribbon Beginning Sensor (SN9).
Based on this resolution, position control of the Ink Ribbon for the Y, M, and C panel is performed by the
relative number of clocksfrom the K panel.
Since resolution varies according to the remaining Ink Ribbon amount, the resolution is updated
every time K panel passesthrough.

[2]

Transfer Film

Control description
Regarding position control of the Transfer Film, resolution is calculated by measuring the number of
clock occurrences by the Film Feed Length Sensor (Supply Axis and Wind-Up Axis, SN14 and SN15 -
respectively), generated at the time of passing through the transfer panel detected by the Film
Beginning Sensor 1 (SN12) or Film Beginning Sensor 2 (SN13).
Based on this resolution and the number of times passing through the beginning mark, position control
of the film is performed. Since the resolution varies according to the remaining amount of the Transfer
Film, it is renewed every time one panel passes through.
At printing, repeat the movement of rewind and take-up every color to transfer 4 colors (Y/M/C/K) ink by
overlapping on the panel.

Initial Operation of Ink Ribbon and Transfer Film

Overview

Control description
The RFID PCB makes initial communication with Main board and ID-key to acquire the type and
remaining amount information of ink ribbon. When ink ribbon is used by initial operation, the remaining
amount information of ink ribbon is updated.
Take-up operation of the Ink Ribbon and Transfer Film is performed to detect the remaining amount and
type of ribbon.
If an error such as undetected clock of the ribbon spool is detected during the take-up operation, the
operation is stopped, anderror information is displayed on the operation panel to prompt the operator
to check the status of the ribbon.
In addition, if the end of the ribbon is detected, the operation is stopped, and error information is
displayed on the operation panel to prompt the operator to replace the ribbon.
By setting [Initialize Mode], it is possible to omit the above operation during initialization. When
omitted, the above operation is performed when printing for the first time.
If the ribbon type is changed after this initialization operation, the initialization operation will be
performed in response to the next print request.

Heat Roller

Overview
Primarily transferred film is transferred to the card using a Heat Roller.

Temperature control
The Transfer Film on which print data is formed and the leading edge of the card are pressed by a Heat
Roller heated to a required temperature in advance and Card Feed Roller 3. The card and the Transfer
Film are fed until the trailing edge of the card passesthrough the Heat Roller, thereby transferring print
data formed on the Transfer Film to the card.
The heat roller temperature changes according to the ambient temperature and card type. After the
secondary transfer, the Heat Roller maintains a temperature necessary for transfer.
In addition, when one hour has passed in the standby state, it stops the temperature control of the
Heat Roller, or turns off theprinter's main power supply according to user mode's [Power Save Mode]
setting.

Up/down operation control

The up and down operation is controlled by the Heat Roller Lift Motor (DM6).
In addition to the Heat Roller, the Heat Roller Lift Motor (DM6) also controls the up and down operation
of the Peeling Shaft.
1. Up position: Heat Roller upward (pressure), Peeling Shaft upward (card lifting position).
2. Intermediate position: Heat Roller upward (release (Intermediate position)), Peeling Shaft upward

AVANSIA PRINT CALIBRATION

Avansia printers don’t have a common default or factory setting.

Each Avansia is calibrated and has its own setting values.
Settings made in factory should be well suited to most of print designs.
It is recommended that you do not change the printer settings. However, if a problem requires
a setting change, note the original settings before changing them.

In case of part replacement (Mainboard, Print Head, HRU, …)), Avansia printer will require calibration,
hence modification of some print settings. To do so, we use Test pattern cards from Avansia firmware.

We recommend the use of test pattern cards hence to set Avansia printers in the following order:

1. Test Pattern X: Print position Adjustment

2. Test Pattern Y: Print Density
3. Test Pattern Z: Print Uniformity
4. Test Pattern U: Vertical Color Shifting Adjustment
5. Test Pattern D (Front & Back): Horizontal Shifting Adjustment
6. Test Pattern B: Edge line or faded line detection, Uniformity, Density

Avansia Print Position:

Service Manual_AVA1_ENG-20220922_I 100

Test Pattern X: Print Position Adjustment

The following card can be printed from LCD menu: Adjustment >> Position >> Print Test X.

This card is used to check the following:

A. VTC (top and bottom) and HRZ (left and right) values measured on printed card should be the
same, each ~ equal to 2mm.
B. Black rectangle measure on printed card should be ~ 81mm long.

HRZ

A. Print Position VTC / HRZ

If VTC is too short, increase PrintPos VTC value (Adjustment >> Position >> PrintPos VTC). Print
position is moved ~ 0.04mm per set unit.
If HRZ is too short, increase PrintPos HRZ value (Adjustment >> Position >> PrintPos HRZ). Print
position is moved ~ 0.1 mm per set unit.

B. Print Pos Width

If black rectangle length is too short, increase PrintPos Width

This setting is available for each card side hence has to be set the same for front and back.

Service Manual_AVA1_ENG-20220922_I 101

Test Pattern Y: Print Density

To obtain lighter or darker printing, please use Brightness/Contrast/Saturation settings from the
driver (page 266 )instead of modifying densities.

The following card can be printed from LCD menu: Adjustment >> Density >> Print Test Y.

In the following array, each different printed area from the card has been identified:

This card is used to check the following:

A. YMC panels density (energy applied to printhead).

When measured with a densitometer, Tg3 square density should be half of Tg2 square density.
Tg3 square should give 0.77 value when measured by a densitometer.

B. K panel density
Black concentric rectangles 8Dk1 & 8Dk2 can be used to detect K panel density setting issue.
These concentric rectangles should have unbroken lines.
If white line is broken by printed black, then reduce K panel density (Adjustment >> Density >> Adj
Density K).
If black line is broken by white (missing print) then increase K panel density (Adjustment >> Density
>> Adj Density K).

Service Manual_AVA1_ENG-20220922_I 102

Test Pattern Z: Print Uniformity

The following card can be printed from LCD menu: Adjustment >> Position >> Print Test Z.

This card is used to check printing uniformity. Color density must be consistent on the whole card.
Adjustment >> Density >> YMC | K
Adjustment >> Uniformity >> Lower | Center | Upper

Service Manual_AVA1_ENG-20220922_I 103

Print Test U: Vertical color shifting

The following card can be printed from LCD menu: Adjustment >> Position >> Print Test U.

This card is used to check vertical color shifting. Here is how to use it.

Printed card shows 3 columns of lines printed with each panel in order to detect shifting from a panel to
another.

Check card and seek for the lines where black print covers exactly color print in each column. Once the
most perfect black line identified on the pattern, value of the “perfect” line can then be applied as Color
vertical shifting setting value.

If we zoom on previous example, we would notice:

“Perfect” line value has to be set as vertical color shifting value (Adjustment >> Position >> Color Shift
VTC).

Service Manual_AVA1_ENG-20220922_I 104

Print Test D: Horizontal color shifting

The following card can be printed from LCD menu: Adjustment >> Position >> Color Shift HRZ >> Shift HRZ
Front >> Print Test D.

This card is used to check vertical color shifting. Here is how to use it.

Goal of this card is to check the 6 areas with parallel lines printed in different colors (hence with different
panels). Each rectangle area should be perfect white and contain from left to right:

- 1 long blue line (C panel)

- 1 short yellow line (Y panel) and 1 short magenta line (M panel).
These 2 short lines should be printed with same alignment.
- 1 long blue line (C panel)

Back >> Print Test D-B. Each side should be set by application of the following steps.

Note that exists an auto color shifting adjustment (Image Setup >> Color Shifting).

It is advised to start calibration by using this option, hence set each manual color shifting option to 0.

On this example, we can notice magenta on left hand side of the areas and yellow on right hand side of
the areas. Also, the 2 Yellow and Magenta short lines are not lined up as it is supposed to.

On this example:

- Magenta panel shift towards right hand side => decrease M Shift Hrz value
- Yellow panel shifts towards left hand side => increase Y Shift Hrz value.

As same settings are available for both card sides, possible settings are the following:

- Y Shift Hrz-F sets Yellow panel position for card front

- M Shift Hrz-F sets Magenta panel position for card front
- C Shift Hrz-F sets Cyan panel position for card front
- Y Shift Hrz-B sets Yellow panel position for card back
- M Shift Hrz-B sets Magenta panel position for card back
- C Shift Hrz-B sets Cyan panel position for card back

Once fixed, Test card should be as following:

Service Manual_AVA1_ENG-20220922_I 106

Test Pattern B: Edge line or faded line detection, Uniformity, Density

The following card can be printed from LCD menu: Adjustment >> Wrinkle >> Adjust Wrinkle >> Print Test
B.

This card can be used to detect wrinkle issue as it is more prone to generate the issue.

Because of the black background, this design can be used to detect/fix edge line issue and/or faded line
issue.
Also, this design is prone to generate missing printed areas hence to detect density settings issue:

This issue is caused by wrong amount of energy applies for 1st and/or 2nd transfer, more generally:
- Because of a lack of energy (heat) for 2nd transfer:
• User menu >> Card Setup >>
• Check card type selection and fix if not set to adequate card type
• Failing to this, use customizable card types

- Because of too much energy applied during 1st transfer (dense design). These designs will alter
retransfer film and sometimes make retransfer film less efficient for 2nd transfer.
• Service menu >> Adjustment >> Density >> Adj Density YMC | Adj Density K

Please note that modification for one transfer will slightly impact other transfer.

For instance, with a card type that uses same temperature but moves card slower will make the card stay
in 2nd transfer position for a longer time hence heat conduction will rise. This may create the need to use
or increase decurl.

REPLACEMENT PROCEDURES
These procedures describe how to replace most spare parts. In general, only dismantling is described.
Unless otherwise indicated, reassembling should be carried out by reversing the steps.
The replacement procedures for certain spare parts may not be presented here, due to the simplicity of
dismantling.

Before starting any of these procedures, you should unplug the printer power supply and
the USB and Ethernet cables.

Please read the chosen procedure completely before you begin. If you do not have the
tools or if the procedure seems too complicated, do not attempt the replacement. This
could cause additional damage to the printer.

Certain photos of procedures may vary slightly depending on the printer. These
differences are not important. The procedures described remain applicable to this printer.

A complete cleaning is recommended after each maintenance procedure.

Basically, good practice for cassette handling consists in making sure cassette reference posts remain in
original position when storing or manipulating the cassettes.

PRINTING TROUBLESHOOTTING
CASSETTE HANDLING GOOD PRACTICES

Avansia cassettes have to be handled with care because cassettes play a very important role in print and
lamination quality.

Cassettes have reference posts that have to remain in original position:

Otherwise, when a reference post is torn, it can create used roll winding issues: badly spun used roll will
pull ribbon/film unevenly which will make film/ribbon crease.

For instance, creased ribbon generates colored wrinkles and creased film generates clear wrinkles.

Ribbon Key Error 67-05

- If message occurs at early beginning of initialization, the initialization probably is a discrepancy

between printer zone and ribbon key zone.
- If message is displayed after ribbon check (initialization process), then it’s more likely discrepancy
between ribbon type and ribbon type value from the key.
- If initialization reached the end and message is displayed during printer usage, it could then be
generated by RFID tag/reader.

“Solutions” consist in having key tag closer to the reader:

- Key maintained as close as possible to reader thanks to bits of card inserted in key slot extra space.
- Tag removed from key and stuck to slot with scotch tape.

Color shift: Adjustment

1. Vertical color shifting – Print Test U

If we zoom on previous example, we could notice:

Once the “most perfect” black line identified on the pattern, value of the “perfect” line can then be applied
as Color vertical shifting setting value: (Adjustment >> Position >> Color Shift VTC).

Service Manual_AVA1_ENG-20220922_I 232

2. Horizontal color shifting – Print Test D

The following card can be printed from LCD menu: Adjustment >> Position >> Color Shift HRZ >> Shift HRZ
Front >> Print Test D.

Note that from Avansia Firmware version 5.6 exists an automatic color shifting adjustment (Image Setup
>> Color Shifting).

It is advised to activate this option.

• First reset any individual manel color shifting settings to 0.

• Activate (AUTO) color shifting from driver or LCD menu (Image Setup >> Color Shifting).

If color shifting is still noticeable with Automatic color shifting option activated, please keep option
activated and follow calibration steps for Vertical and/or Color shifting.

Service Manual_AVA1_ENG-20220922_I 233

This card is used to check horizontal color shifting.

Service Manual_AVA1_ENG-20220922_I 234

Same settings exist for both card side Adjustment >> Position >> Color Shift HRZ >> Shift HRZ
Back >> Print Test D-B. Each side should be set by application of the following steps.

- Y Shift Hrz-F: sets Yellow panel position for card front

- M Shift Hrz-F: sets Magenta panel position for card front
- C Shift Hrz-F: sets Cyan panel position for card front
- Y Shift Hrz-B: sets Yellow panel position for card back
- M Shift Hrz-B: sets Magenta panel position for card back
- C Shift Hrz-B: sets Cyan panel position for card back

Once fixed, Test card should be as following:

Color wrinkles: Creased ribbon

Ribbon crease is generated by too much heat applied during primary transfer.

This is more often noticed when printing dense images. Printhead heats up high and ribbon get loosened
(stretched) by heat excess.

CLEAR WRINKLES

Depending of the design sent to the printer transparent wrinkles can be visible on printed card.

This issue occurs during secondary transfer (lamination).

Clear wrinkles: Clear film

Replace the clear film by a new one.

Clear wrinkles: cassettes

1. It is possible to print even if one of the two cassettes is not well inserted in the printer.
There is no error massage to tell that the cassette is not well inserted.
In that case an horizontal brown strip on 1/5 of the printed card and retransfer wrinkles appear
(especially if the clear film cassette is not well inserted).

2. Test with a new cassette.

Service Manual_AVA1_ENG-20220922_I 251

Clear wrinkles: used film rolls

Check used film roll.

Normal appearance is a bulge on each side:

If bulge is only on one side, then used film is winded with a bad hence pulled with a bad angle.

Service Manual_AVA1_ENG-20220922_I 252

Clear wrinkles: cassettes

If cassette reference post is torn, then it creates an angle when film is pulled. This may make the film
crease which generates clear wrinkles during lamination.

Cassettes have reference posts that have to remain aligned in original position:

Otherwise, when a reference post is torn, it can create used roll winding issues: badly spun used roll will
pull ribbon/film unevenly which will make film/ribbon crease.

Card types offered by Avansia are presets:

• PVC 30mil/0.76
• PET-G 30mil
• PET 30mil/0.76
• PC 30mil/0.76
• Composite PVC

In case none of cars type presets apply to customer card type, exists other card types which are
customizable (speed and heat).

Speed can be set from 15mm/s to 50mm/s.

Heat temperature can be set from -15 to 11.

When selecting card type CARD1 / CARD2 / CARD3 from LCD menu, each time you can set
speed and/or heat if needed.

Rubbing mark

On some printed cards mostly in case of dense designs you may notice a matte area. This generally occurs
on right side of the printed card and more often looks like a matte vertical stripe 4-5 mm wide very close
to card right edge.

Below is a very obvious example of it:

Clear film picture matching with rubbing card sample above.

Service Manual_AVA1_ENG-20220922_I 258

This issue occurs during secondary transfer when separate layer separates from base film.

Sometimes cohesive failure happens under some conditions like high density image (primary transfer
heat alters RT film structure), wrong transferring temperature, card material.

This cohesive failure part looks matte (or whitish) and should not be confused with edge line,
check below an example of Rubbing mark vs. Edge line:

RUBBING MARK EDGE LINE

Solution: Setting lower density for primary transfer or setting secondary transfer temperature higher.
1. Setting color density at primary transfer lower
Service mode>>Adjustment>>Density>>Adj Density YMC>>Set

2. Setting secondary transfer temperature higher

User mode>>card Setup>>Card Type1>>Card1(25, +8)

Card1(25, +8) is same setting as Card type PVC and which heat roller heat is 185 degrees.

Ex: Starting from Card1(25, +10) and increasing temperature step by step.

By making transportation speed slow, lamination time would be longer and has an effect on
secondary transfer problem.

Both rising transfer temperature and making transportation speed slow have an effect on card
curling. It may require setting decurl accordingly.

Black stains on cards / Ripoff

On above printed cards can be noticed:

• ripped off areas usually located where color and real black meet on the design.

• black stains on card edge.

This issue comes from printhead heat management between YMC and K panels. A new feature was
introduced in firmware version 5.5 (and higher) which makes sure printhead cools down enough before
printing with K panel: User mode>>Image Setup>>BK Sub-Heat Adj.

If on design you notice black stains on cards, especially on designs that don’t use K panel, please check
and adjust "BK Sub-Heat Adj" to "-40" in printer settings: User mode >> Image Setup >> BK Sub-Heat Adj

If you notice this issue and/or after Avansia printer firmware upgrade to 5.5 firmware version (and higher),
check the following parameter is set with adequate value (-40 or below):

User mode >> Image Setup >> BK Sub-Heat Adj >> -40

Service Manual_AVA1_ENG-20220922_I 263

If you notice black stains on cad edge with designs that don’t use K panel at all, issue is
generated for the same reason (printhead heat management between YMC and K panels):

Once BK Sub-Heat Adj set to -40 (or below) above issue should disappear.
