RATIONALE. Include a brief synopsis of the background that supports your research problem and explain why
this research is important and if applicable, explain any societal impact of your research.

This science investigatory project investigates the feasibility of using aloe vera-based
alcohol as a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to traditional alcohol-based hand
sanitizers. By examining the antimicrobial properties of aloe vera and its effectiveness in
eliminating harmful microorganisms, this research aims to provide insights into its potential as
an environmentally conscious choice for hand hygiene.
Research Question or Problem being Addressed.
1. What are the benefits of using Aloe Vera based alcohol as an environmentally friendly
alternative to traditional alcohol-based hand sanitizer?
2. How effective is Aloe Vera based alcohol in eliminating harmful microorganisms?
GOALS/EXPECTED OUTCOMES/HYPOTHESIS
Aloe Vera based alcohol is an effective alternative to traditional alcohol-based hand
sanitizer in eliminating harmful microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses.
PROCEDURES. Detail all procedures and experimental design to be used for data collection.
Equipment

 Blender (recommended)

 Small travel-size bottles

 Larger storage bottle for extra

Ingredients

Using 91 to 99% strength rubbing alcohol

 2 parts 91-99% alcohol. For example, 1 cup alcohol

 1 part Pure aloe vera gel. For example: 1/2 cup of aloe gel (not aloe vera lotion)

Using 70% strength rubbing alcohol

 3 cups 70% alcohol

 1/3 cup Pure aloe vera gel. NO more than 1/3 cup*
Procedure

1. Combine rubbing alcohol and pure aloe vera gel in ratios described above.

2. You may scale up both ingredients to create a larger batch, but maintain the same ratios (For example, it is okay

to use 2 cups of 99% alcohol and 1 cup aloe vera gel. OR 5 cups of 60% rubbing alcohol and 1/2 cup aloe vera.)

3. Add a few drops of essential oils of choice, such as lavender, rosemary, eucalyptus, cinnamon, tea tree, citrus,

thyme, lemongrass, or oregano.

4. If using fresh aloe vera leaf, peel away the skin and use only the inner gel. See the demonstration video in the

body of this article.

5. It may be possible to combine bottled aloe vera gel and alcohol by whisking vigorously in a bowl. We use fresh

aloe vera and blend it in a Vitamix blender. A blender is recommended for the smoothest and combined

homemade hand sanitizer. It should not clog your bottle.

6. Once thoroughly combined/blended, add the finished homemade hand sanitizer to a travel size spray or squeeze

bottle of choice. Note that this recipe will create a thin, sprayable hand sanitizer (rather than a thick gel). Store the

excess in a cool dark location.

7. Store the excess in a cool dark location. Fresh leaf aloe vera gel may turn light pink when exposed to light, but it

is not "going bad". The alcohol effectively preserves it

RISK AND SAFETY. Identify any potential risks and safety precautions needed.
Contamination – make sure to use fresh and clean aloe vera gel extracted from the leaves. It is
recommended to use gloves in the procedure.
Cuts and Wounds – may occur in cutting aloe vera leaves while making the solution.
Allergic reaction – may cause allergy reaction especially to those who have sensitive skin.
DATA ANALYSIS. Examine, organize, and interpret data to answer research questions, or
either accept or reject hypotheses.
As reported by Yates, A. (2002) Aloe vera has long been cultivated as an ornamental plant.
The species is well-liked by contemporary gardeners for its useful therapeutic properties. The
thick, pointed, and fleshy green leaves of aloe vera, which can reach a length of 12–19 inches
(30–50 centimeters), are its most distinctive feature. Most of the plant's beneficial bioactive
compounds, including vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and antioxidants, are present in the gel.
Hand sanitizer is in high demand right now as people become more aware of the importance of
hygiene. In this research, however, it is discovered that most hand sanitizers on the market are
packed with endocrine disruptors like triclosan and triclocarban. An alcohol-based hand
sanitizer with aloe vera is created as a safe and effective alternative that is completely free of
dangerous ingredients.
Aloe Vera is currently popular as a natural moisturizer, and because of its gel-like
consistency, it is ideal for use in hand sanitizers.
The truth is that Aloe Vera naturally protects against bacterial and viral diseases. When c
ombined with Ethyl Alcohol 70%, the organic Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Leaf Juice used i
n the composition acts to fight germs without upsetting the hormonal balance of humans.
While the benefits of hand sanitizer are undeniable, many available products dry out the
hands. Fortunately, hand sanitizer with Aloe Vera helps overcome that problem. Aloe Vera
moisturizes and nurtures with essential vitamins and nutrients, keeping the skin soft and supple
as well as clean.
To kill germs, many hand sanitizers use potent chemicals and synthetic substances. These,
however, might harm or even dry up the skin. Aloe Vera is a healthy component with hydrating
and antioxidant qualities. Aloe Vera hand sanitizer calms skin while cleansing. Choose
products with nourishing components over those that contain harmful chemicals.
