I. Research Plan

Rationale

The world produced around 68,925,200 tons of oranges, with much of that figure

being used to make products like jams, marmalades, and juices– all of which result in

around 3.8 million tons of orange peel waste per year according to a Garden Collage

article. Thus as a researcher I came out with an idea to manage that waste and add another

ingredient into it.

We write papers, open doors and windows, and hold money with our hands every

day. All of these activities expose our hands to bacteria and germs that might be harmful.

Hand sanitizer was invented for times when soap and water are not available. Because

alcohol can dry out the skin, most sanitizer brands include a moisturizer to avoid

irritation and dryness.

Aloe vera is well-known for its moisturizing properties. It contains enzymes,

antioxidants, vitamins A and C, as well as antioxidant and antibacterial qualities, and it

seeps into the skin like magic and can treat the said irritation and dryness .Some people

although do not like the smell of aloe vera which has a stinky onion and garlic smell that

isn't pleasant. Citrus like oranges has a very fresh juicy aromatic scent that can solve that,

but they not only serves as a great scent but citrus has also antibacterial and antifungal

properties that can further help fight germs and bacteria in our everyday lives.
Statement of the Problem

This orange peel zest and aloe vera as a handsanitizer will be used to contain

moisture and be used for bacteria elimination. According to the Center for Disease

Control (CDC), hand hygiene encompasses the cleansing of hands by using soap and

water, antiseptic hand washes, antiseptic hand rubs such as alcohol-based hand sanitizers

(ABHS), foams or gels, or surgical hand antisepsis. Hand sanitizers as a disinfectant are

in more use today because of its ease of availability, lack of water and time, and their

proven efficacy in lowering microbial load. Aloe vera has been used by mankind for

thousands of years in folk medicine for therapeutic properties especially on skin. Aloe

vera latex and gel have physiologically active substances with biological effects, acting

alone or indicating a synergistic are many of them on the market which use Aloe vera in

concentrations varying from 1 to 98% 14. It is well known that Aloe gel enables hold

moisture for extremely long periods of time and has soothing effects as well. On the other

hand oranges are a nutritional powerhouse, packed with vitamins and minerals. The most

noteworthy of these is vitamin C, a water-soluble antioxidant that prevents cell damage, it

aims to answer these questions:

1. Is hand sanitizer really effective in keeping hands clean?

2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of hand sanitizer use?

3. Is it alright to use hand sanitizer in cleaning certain wounds?

Hypothesis

The researcher will be guided by the following hypothesis:

1. The handsanitizer would be a better moisturizing alternative than alcohol

2. This handsanitizer is more accessible and environmental friendly

3. The product would have better antibacterial and moisturizing agents that are effective

and convenient.

Methodology

A. MATERIALS

•1 tablespoon orange peel

•1 aloe vera leaf

•1 bottle alcohol

•1tablespoon glycerin
B. PROCEDURE

Remove the aloe vera gel from the leaves by scraping it off with a spoon or a small knife.

Grate the orange peels to obtain the orange zest.

After obtaining the zest, put all of the ingredients together in a blender.

Then, apply the aloe vera gel.

1 cup of ethyl alcohol is added to the mixture

After adding the orange zest, combine the ingredients then two teaspoons of glycerin

Label the final product and place it in a small bottle or container.

Risks and Safety

The blending and aloe vera scraping process should proceed with caution. Side

effects, if any, tend to be mild. They may include skin irritation and redness, allergies can

sometimes occur. Keep in mind that aloe vera gel should not be used to treat severe burns

or wounds. Keep the rubbing alcohol away from eyes to avoid irritation.
