Types of Roads ( Co-ordinates )


As vehicles have roads to move. Likewise in chess, pieces have roads to move. They are called
FILES, RANKS, and DIAGONALS

1. Files
Vertical roads are called FILES.
There are 8 vertical roads ( FILES ) on a
chess board.
They are called as follows
A file
B file
C file
.
.
.
H file

2. Ranks
Horizontal roads are called RANKS.
There are 8 Horizontal roads ( RANKS ) on
a chess board.
They are called as follows
1st Rank
2nd Rank
3rd Rank
.
.
.
8th Rank

3. Diagonals
Slanting lines are called DIAGONALS.

Square names & Names of Chess Pieces

There are 64 squares on the chess board ( 32 light & 32 dark squares).
All 64 squares have names.
Now let us see how to name each square.

Let us consider this example


Here we will try to find the square name of
the marked square.

First, we have to see to which FILE it


belongs.
Here it belongs to D File
The second step is to see to which rank it
belongs
Here it belongs to 3rd Rank
So the square name will be d3

NOTE: First we should have to write to which


FILE it belongs followed by to which
RANK it belongs

The Knight The Pawn


Resembles Horse It is a soldier
