group, some of the things we will talk about in class will be
difficult to talk about. We will listen quietly and respectfully, we
will not make fun of others and what they are going through.
- Today we will be talking about coping skills and things we can do
to help us feel better
Communicate the - Students will learn they are not alone in their grief
Lesson Objective: - Students will learn how to effectively cope with their grief
Teach Content: - Ask students what they can do to cope with the sadness they may
feel
- Talk about different coping skills that can be used for some
feeling sadness or loss (talking to a grown up or friend, listening
to a song, write a letter, give someone a hug, etc.)
- Make sure to validate their feelings and acknowledge the pain
they may be feeling
Practice Content: - Have students write things they have lost or that has hurt their
heart on the paper heart
- Students can either rip the heart into pieces that has one ‘loss’ or
hurt’ on each piece or the can crumple the paper, so it has
wrinkles in it
- On the Band-Aids, have students write things that help them
cope with this hurt they are feeling.
- Then have the students place the Band-Aids on the hearts. If they
have ripped the heart, have them place the Band-Aids so their
heart is put back together
Summarize/Close: - Ask students to go over the coping skills they learned today and
when good times to use those skills would be
- Remind them that these are things we can do when we feel sad
