Storage to ease production

President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi (left) and Safe Pro Cold Storage Solutions CEO, Mr Saleem Malique touring the company’s cold storage facility
during its opening at JP Roos Farm in Sherwood on Friday. Safe Pro Cold Storage Solutions is a state-of-the-art cold storage facility with a
capacity to store 4 700 tonnes of produce. President Masisi said value chains across the economy, particularly those offered at the facility, were an
affirmation of the Reset Agenda. He further said one of the priorities that were promulgated following COVID-19 was value chain development,

Knowledge-based economy made possible

BIUST eyes industrial transformation

B otswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST) was founded on the
vision to pioneer the country’s industrial transformation through the fields of science,

that include the Square Kilometre Array, Botswana Satellite 1 and Drones for Health which have
come to play a role in propelling the country to a knowledge-based economy.

Girls benefit from GEMS

A BIUST programme dubbed Girls Excelling in Mathematics and Science (GEMS) is driven by government’s recognition
of the role of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in changing lives and diversifying the
economy. It seeks to promote participation of young girls in Science and Mathematics, providing them with prospects
to flourish, writes Portia Rapitsenyane.

“The students do not get to see and experience the application
of the theory that they learnt in class. As such, BIUST through its
experts has endeavoured to assist in augmenting the teacher’s
efforts through this programme,” he said.
Dr Motlhabani said the e-learning programme was meant to
make life easier for students borrowing from the notion that
technology was all about bringing efficiency and effectiveness.
He, therefore, said BIUST had come to a point where through
some of the techniques they could also keep simple things to
mimic life phenomenon and be able to prove to the learners
that these things were real and they could see and touch them.
Dr Motlhabani said performance in STEM had not been that
good and the situation has been exacerbated by laboratories
which had been turned into classrooms.
“Even where laboratories are there, there is not enough
equipment leaving teachers with no choice but to teach science
and mathematics in a theoretical way,” he said.
He said though BIUST could not afford to teach the whole
syllabus, they always advised schools to identify areas of
difficulties in the STEM and provide them with the list. “In that
instance we come up with a programme where we demonstrate
to them using what is called the smart board which offers a link
with schools at a particular agreed times,” he said.
He said where there was enough connectivity, the expectations
were that students would connect and the lecturer would take
it from there.
“Here is the opportunity, so this is what the e- learning is all
about,” he said.
Dr Motlhabani said they had popularised the concept by
calling all senior teachers of senior secondary schools to discuss
it with them hence the programme had started in earnest.
He said the programme, which was on its second year was not BIUST team interacting with girls as part of the GEMS programme.
