Instron Test Method Brief

ISO 6892-1:2019

The following Test Method Brief was written as a guide for users of Bluehill Pre-configured Test Methods. It is critical
that users reference the specific international testing standard, as this document is designed to summarize the
main sections of the standard related to materials testing, inform the user how the Bluehill method was setup, and
provide any additional instructions that may be required. Any errors or changes in the test method or this
documentation are not the responsibility of Instron.

GENERAL STANDARD INFORMATION

Standard #: ISO6892-1:2019
Title: Metallic Materials – Tensile Testing. Part 1: Method of test at room temperature
Material: Metal
Test Type: Metal
Specimen Type: Rectangular, Rod, Bar & Tubes.
Method Summary: This template is suitable for creating test procedures that comply with ISO 6892-1: 2016.
Test rates and control are set according to the recommended ranges. The different
templates are intended for specimens that produce an Upper Yield point (Reh) and are
Discontiously yielding as well as Continuously yielding with no Upper Yield Point. Default
calculated results include Reh, Rel, Rp0.2, Ae, Fm, Rm and A.

TEST EQUIPMENT USED

The testing machine must be of class 1 or better and be verified with ISO 7500-1.
For proof strength, extensometers used shall be of class 1 according to ISO 9513.
For other properties, a class 2 extensometer, according to ISO 9513, may be used.

CONFIGURABLE TEST METHOD PARAMETERS

Some test standards call for different settings depending on specimen or geometry types. We have done our best to
accommodate as many different types as possible within this test method; however, the following settings should be
manually modified depending on your specific test specimen or application.

PARAMETER CONFIGURATION OPTIONS DEFAULT SETTING

Pre-Load The standard specifies a preliminary force may be applied up Rate: 5.0mm/min
to 5% of the expected yield strength. This default value is set Threshold value: 10MPa
to 10MPa which may need to be changed. It is critical to do Action: Auto-balance
this to ensure alignment of the test piece and grip Tensile Strain
arrangement.
Data Rate Annex A of ISO6892-1:2016 provides recommendations Channel: Frequency
concerning the use of computer-controlled tensile testing Interval: 1 point/50Hz
machines. A.2.2 address data sampling frequency to give a
minimum, the default value we have defined is typically
higher than this recommendation.
Axial Source for Axial source for tensile strain is Strain 1 – as an Strain 1
Tensile Strain extensometer is commonly required with this standard. This
would need to be changed if an extensometer were not used
(Extension) or the device were connected to a different
channel (Strain 2).

Test Rate See the Speed of Testing Table. Method A1 & A2: Range 2
& Range 4.
Method B: 10MPa/S
Geometry Geometry options include Rectangular, Circular, ‘irregular’, Rectangular
Tubular & pipe or tube.
Parallel Length Parallel Length (Lc) needs to be defined as this defines the 100mm
test speed of the machine using the control mode ‘estimated
strain rate’. This rate calculates a crosshead speed using the
parallel length and the strain rate that is to be achieved.
Modulus of The Automatic Young’s modulus calculation was chosen as Automatic Young’s
Elasticity default for this method; however, a different modulus
calculation may be more appropriate for your material. ‘E-
Modulus’, ‘Youngs’ & ‘Metals Matrix’ are suitable
alternatives. See the calculations reference pages in the
help for more details.
End of Test Several options are available for allowing the software to Rate of Load: 40%
determine when the test has ended. A 40% drop in the rate of
loading was selected for this method. These settings may
need changed to fit a particular specimen/material.

Specimen Parameters

Parameter Configuration Options Default Setting

Geometry Geometry options include Rectangular, Circular, Tubular or Rectangular
Irregular. This test method is set up for testing flat specimens but
can easily be configured for testing rounds.
Note: dimensions reported in the Results Table may need updated
based on any change from the default.
Width The user will need to input the specimen width and thickness if 10.0mm
Rectangular specimen geometry is chosen. These dimensions are
used by the software to automatically calculate the cross-sectional
area of the specimen.
Thickness The user will need to input the specimen width and thickness if 1.0mm
Rectangular specimen geometry is chosen. These dimensions are
used by the software to automatically calculate the cross-sectional
area of the specimen.
Diameter Diameter is measured prior to testing the specimen. The Diameter 10mm
is used by the software to automatically calculate the cross-
sectional area of the specimen. If “Circular” is chosen as the
geometry, the user will need to input the specimen diameter.
Parallel Length Length should be set as the parallel length of the narrow section of 100mm
the specimen (specimen gauge length), not as the total specimen
length. If an extensometer is used, the gauge length will be
determined by the device; if no extensometer is used or the device
is removed, the specimen “length” value will be used to calculate
the strain measurement from crosshead extension.
Initial Mark Initial Mark Separation represents the distance between the marks 10mm
Separation that are placed on the specimen for purposes of determining

ISO 6892-1:2019
Elongation After Fracture. These marks are often made with a
punch device, but can be made other ways prior to testing the
specimen.
Final Mark Final Mark Separation represents the distance between the 100mm
Separation specimen gauge marks after fracture. This measurement is
performed manually by holding the two broken pieces back
together.

Mechanical Properties:
Parameter Configuration Options Default Setting
mE The Elastic Slope is used to determine properties such as Rp0.2. E-Modulus
The “E-modulus” calculation is being used in this method to
determine the slope in the elastic region. It was chosen because it
is automatic and does not require input from the user when testing
different alloys. A different modulus calculation may be more
appropriate for determining the elastic slope of your material. See
the calculations reference pages in the help for more details.
Rp0.2 Proof Strength, plastic extension is found using the 0.2% Strain Offset Yield (0.2%) from E-
Offset Method in which a line is drawn parallel to the slope of the Modulus
elastic region (mE). The Stress value where this line intersects the
Stress-Strain curve is the Proof Strength at the given plastic
extension of 0.2%.
Rm Tensile Strength is determined from the Tensile Stress at the Tensile Stress at
Maximum Load. Maximum Load
Fm The maximum force experienced by the specimen during the test is Load at Max Load
determined by the Maximum Load calculation.
Ag The percentage plastic extension at max force is found by reporting Non-proportional
the % Elongation at Tensile Strength for Non- Proportional Elongation
Elongation which eliminates the elastic extension from the result. (report % elongation at
tensile strength)
Agt Percentage total extension at maximum force is found by reporting Tensile Strain at Max Load
Tensile Strain at Maximum Load.
A Percentage Elongation after fracture can be determined Non-proportional
automatically or manually. This method is set up to report this Elongation
value automatically. It reports the percentage elongation at break (report % elongation at
from the non-proportional elongation calculation. This eliminates break)
the elastic extension from the result automatically. Alternatively,
the manual method can be used in which the specimen is marked
and measured. Select the “Elongation After Fracture” result to use
the manual approach.
At Percentage total extension at fracture is determined by reporting Tensile Strain at Break
the tensile strain at Break. It includes elastic and plastic
deformation.

SPEED OF TESTING
Within ISO6892-1:2016 there are three different control Methods. Method A1, Method A2 are based on maintaining
a strain rate within a +/- 20% tolerance at the point of yield and Method B is based on maintaining a stress rate in
the elastic region.

Method A1 & A2:

The defined rates are dependent on the results that are being determined. Below shows the ranges that are defined
from ISO 6892-1, Range 2 is the recommended rate for determining yield (Rp) and Range 4 is recommended for
determining Rm, Agt, Ag, At & A

1 0.00007 ± 20%
2 0.00025 ± 20%
3 0.002 ± 20%
4 0.0067 ± 20%

Method B:
The defined rates vary depending on the modulus of elasticity of the material being tested.
