As a parent or teacher of a Year 1 student, you may have experienced the frustration and difficulty of

helping your child with their phonics screening homework. Phonics is a crucial aspect of early
literacy development, and the Year 1 phonics screening check is a key assessment to determine a
child's reading ability. However, trying to teach and reinforce phonics concepts at home can be a
daunting task.

With the increasing demands and expectations placed on young students, it's understandable that
many parents and teachers may feel overwhelmed and unsure of how to effectively support their

The Challenges of Teaching Phonics

Teaching phonics requires a deep understanding of the English language and its complex rules and
exceptions. It can be challenging to explain these concepts to a young child in a way that they can
understand and apply. Additionally, children may have different learning styles and may struggle
with certain phonics concepts more than others.

Furthermore, finding the time and energy to sit down and go through phonics homework with your
child after a long day can be difficult. This can lead to frustration and a lack of progress in their
learning.

check took place”. Practising and reinforcing their knowledge and skills is key as they need to be

VJ, I am really glad she is not teaching any child I know. If they’d had a whole year to teach these
children how to decode nonsense words and read a list of words instead of a book, they’d have
passed the test. Whether you’re on the hunt for everyday phonics inspiration you can use with your

teaching. Remember to talk about the meaning if your child does not understand the word they have
read. Would be interested to hear how he found it, if you’re happy to share. I have taught very able
(level 5) year 6 readers who, when they reached an unfamiliar name or word, just stopped and
looked at me, or made something up based on the first few letters. Writing words and cutting up
them up into different sounds or writing words into phoneme frames can all practise and reinforce
these skills. See other similar resources ?0.00 4.80 36 reviews Download Save for later Not quite
what you were looking for. Many of you have said there needs to be a test of some sort and phonics

things going on in school, and it is quite a big thing, really. From fun phonics games and activities, to
worksheets, practice questions and revision aids, here you’ll find a selection of engaging lesson ideas
from teachers in the Tes community. I hope your daughter wasn’t too bothered about it. They
struggle when these props fail them, which they will once they move on to books without predictive
tense. Hopefully, it won’t give children a knock-back in their progress at learning to read (whether
through insisting on testing recognition of phonics letter groups rather than actual words, or through
making confident readers feel like failures because they can’t decode a nonsense word. In my
experience, encouraging children to use context too much too early almost invariably confuses
struggling readers, and makes progress slower. And, my daughter fortunately goes towards proving
my point as, a year after I wrote this post, she is reading over three years ahead of reading age,
including Dahl and Rowling. Some didn’t. 5. Some children were stressed by that. Reading a list of
words at a point where they should be reading close to fluently seems counter-productive and also
likely to not be indicative of actual reading ability. They are then taught how to blend these sounds
together to read the whole word. If a child gets less than the pass mark they have problems reading.
What is phonics?. Phonics is a way of teaching children how to read quickly and skilfully. They don’t
need a week off timetable to fit in testing all their children themselves. In that respect I guess it’s
much like all the compulsory testing.
My issue is not the screening (if its going to help our children then i’m all for it) but the amount of
nonsense words a 6 year old is expected to be able to decode and read. What is Phonics?. The
children have daily phonics lessons. We’ve received a copy to review, and we’ll be giving our verdict
next Sunday ( My Phonics Kit review is now live ), but on a first quick flick through, it looks like
they’ve done an excellent job at providing a comfortable introduction and practise for this test. Ideal
for practicing pseudo words for the Year 1 Ph. As a teacher, I have been drafting a letter to reassure
parents whose children are very capable readers but have not reached the expected pass rate in the
phonics test that there is nothing to worry about. It will take place in school during the week

of the child’s broader progress rather than panicking about how the results reflect on them and the
school. Practising and reinforcing their knowledge and skills is key as they need to be able to apply,
rather than learn a given set or words. If a child is then able to decode the real word and fit it into the
sentence they will do. There’s little point identifying struggling readers if they can’t provide
investment to give them one-to-one individual help. As for VJ, I am really glad she is not teaching

work with children according to their ability and needs in learning to read. However, phonics does
not deliver children who read for meaning, or children who read for pleasure. And they will help
those children who are struggling, using the most appropriate methods for them. Don't forget to

forward they are being pushed a step back. Which essentially translates as “they were actually testing
they could read the words, when they should have been testing that they could do a test in a specific
way and specific format”. I suspect that that means that the school are not making a big thing of it.
By reading and playing in this way they are learning through meaning, they are making sense of
what they are listening to or reading. There is no research to show that phonics delivers a higher score
for reading for meaning at year 6 than using mixed methods. Watch the video to see how quick the
