Cenetic resource is an important wealth of any
region. Identification of genetic resources in
important plants and animal species and their
sustainable conservation and utilization assumes
paramount significance due to change in climate,
degradation of natural resources and loss of
habitat. In this context, ICAR-Central Coastal
Agricultural Research Institute has mega project on
Conservation and utilization of genetic resources in
the coastal region of India, which addresses the
issues in major crops of Goa and other coastal
regions of India.
Dr. EB Chakurkar In this endeavour, Institute has brought out
Director (Acting), many bulletins on the genetic resources available in
ICAR-CCARI, Coa
major crops of Goa and their utilization. This
bulletin is the outcome of intensive survey for
collection, conservation and evaluation of
amaranthus germplasm in the state of Goa. The
survey has resulted in identification of many
promising types in amaranthus for yield as well as
tolerance to biotic and abiotic stress. The whole
gamut of germplasm in amaranth accessions of Goa
is well depicted in the bulletin with salient features.
The details of collection sites as well as
geographical coordinates are provided for
planning future collection in vegetable amaranth.

I hope that this bulletin will serve as useful

database for further conservation and utilization. I
congratulate the authors for their efforts in bringing
out this important document for posterity.

Conclusion
Intensive surveys resulted in collection, conservation and evaluation of
thirty
seven accessions of red amaranthus along with few green as well
as intermediate
types fromGoa state. These accessions were evaluatedfor differentmorphological
method through
traits including colour value by calorimetric method and indirect
colour meter. Among the accessions evaluated, red amaranthus collection
from
Manora-Raia, Salcettl Taluk, South Goa District recorded higher yield
dutingrabi
season compared to other 36 red amaranthus collections from
the state of Goa and
Bhaii-T for
it is field tolerant to white rust and subsequently released as Goa Tambdi
the state of Goa. Other promising accessions aiz., Amar New-06,
Amar New-01-'
Amar-I7-97 and, Arflar-2:.-111- are being evaluated for consecutive seasons
for
and
yield and other traits. Further work on diversity analysis at molecular level
mineral profile of promising accessions are being planned for future crop
improvement in red amaranthus.
