What is Product Development?
Product –
Something sold by an enterprise to its customers.

Product Development –
• Complete process of delivering a new product or improving an existing
one for customers.
• Set of activities beginning with the perception of a market opportunity
and ending in prototype, production, sale and delivery of a product
• Discrete engineering products

◼ Engineered products include not only consumer
products, but industrial equipment, test fixtures and
components.

The Need for Technology

◼ Products are becoming more complex

◼ Reduce skills requirement
◼ Speed up process
◼ Make process more ‘repetitive’
◼ Automation
◼ Intelligence
◼ Accuracy (quality)
◼ New fabrication approach (e.g. 3D printing)
◼ What else?
Computer Aided Product Development
◼ Product development relates to the processes and techniques
employed in the design and manufacture of a product.

◼ This course will focus on the early stages of product

development of discrete engineering products, looking at the
methodology and technologies available to translate new
ideas into a manufactured reality.

◼ Emphasis will be on the practical implications and constraints,

with an integrated assignment that encourages student
groups to investigate the generation of a new, hypothetical
product.

Engineering Products - Example
Hydrao Smart Shower

• Consumers looking for smart

tech with a saving-the-planet

• This showerhead changes

colour when you use too much
water

• 4 LED lights and sensors that monitor how much water volume has passed through
• Average American uses between 75-80 liters (19-21 gallons) of water every time
they shower
• Work without additional batteries or electricity
• Uses an internal turbine system that’s powered by the flow of water into the
showerhead

• Price of $99
• HYDRAO

Engineering Products - Example
Engineering Products - Example

• Lenify is a collapsible emergency

stretcher that all but eliminates the
chances of secondary injuries caused by
lifting patients onto the stretcher.

• The solution: divide the stretcher into

three parts to stabilize the upper body,
arms/midsection, and lower body.

• This unique construction makes it

possible to “scoop” the individual into
the stretcher rather than the traditional
“lift and drop” method.
Medical Devices
A medical device is
considered any apparatus
that does not exert its
action through chemical
means and is used in
monitoring, diagnosis,
mitigation, therapy, or
prevention of disease.

◼ Interaction between the firm and its customer

 Design:
◼ Design functions best meet customer needs

 Manufacturing
◼ Manufacturing of the product that meet design
specifications
 Others
◼ Research; Finance; Legal; Sales; Servicing
