HW1: Developing critical reading skills.

You will read an article on the topic of academic integrity in the age of
generative AI.

Step 1: Before reading the article answer the following questions:

Reader’s background and value assumptions

1. What do you already know about the topic?
<type your answer here>
- Academic integrity is important, but it is threatened by the emergence of
generative AI.
- Generative AI is a computer programme that can help people do writing
and research assignments, etc…
- It is a poweful assistance for writers. However, abusing AI can be
considered to be plagiarised.

2. What are your beliefs and values about the topic?

<type your answer here>
- I believe that academic integrity is important and generative AI, no matter
how good it is, can not replace the role of humans’ brain.
- I am proud to complete my assignment on my own because it is my
product. Sometimes, AI can be useful in terms of looking for ideas or
sources, but it needs to be verified to make sure that everything is fine.

Writer’s background and value assumptions

1. What is the writer’s background?
<type your answer here>
- My background is law and finance. I used to write a lot without help of AI. I
am writing a book of my own and I know the greatest magnum opuses is
written by humans.
2. How might it affect the writer’s approach to the topic and interpretation
of evidence?
<type your answer here>
I will brainstorm about the topic before seeking help from other sources like
AI. If the topic is related to my background, it will be easier to interpret the
evidence.

Step 2: Read the article (access here) and answer the following
questions:

Writer’s argument and conclusions

1. What is the writer’s main argument?
<type your answer here>
It is: When generative AI become more way spread teachers must find
creative ways to integrate them into the teaching and learning process and
offer practical suggestions for classroom practice.
2. What conclusions does the writer draw?
<type your answer here>

Instead of restraining or prohibiting students from using AI, we should accept

and befriend such a tool by showing the students how to use AI authoring
ethically and gainfully to achieve their learning intentions and goals.
Writer’s use of evidence
1. What sort of evidence does the writer use?
<type your answer here>
I don’t know how many kinds of evidence there are in total. Consulting
chapter 8 in the textbook, I know that the writer uses theories and
statements quoted from other writers. There are many statements quoted in
quotation marks. Sometimes, the writer gives a direct link to the website that
contains what has written. Additionally, the writer also provides some
snapshots and screenshots to support a certain argument.

2. Does the evidence offer adequate support? Why(not)?

<type your answer here>
Yes, it does. To be honest, the writer cited so many different sources that
didn’t have enough time to look through all of them. However, I see that the
writer have provided evidence in every step of his/her argument.

3. Do you find the evidence credible and/or sufficient? Why(not)?

<type your answer here>
The evidence provided in the article come from written publications.I think
it’s better to have evidence from real life interviews so it can becomes more
persuasive for example, the opinions of regulators and educators.
Reader’s reaction
1. To what degree do you accept the writer’s conclusions?
<type your answer here>

I partially agree with the writers conclusions because his arguments are
persuasive. However, I think it is necessary to stated very clearly about
involvement of AI in the writing specifically, to what extent, AI is being used.
And it should be limited to a range given by the instructors.
There is an agreement that it is unfair in assessment, but I think it is fair
because those who abuse generative AI can achieve high score at the
expense of their ability.
2. How has the writer’s argument changed your views on the topic?
<type your answer here>
It has changed a little bit of my views because it has made me more open-
minded with generative AI. Before that, I thought generative AI was not
smart enough, and created hollow words. It should be used for fun or
vocabulary suggestions than academic writing. But now I think I should take
advantage of this powerful tool to learn and developed myself.

Step 3: What would this source look like in an APA-formatted reference

list?
According to APA, the format of the source will be displayed like this:
Author's Last Name, Author's First Initial. (Year). Title of the Work. Source
Information.
If so, the source would look like:

(AI) authoring apps. TESOL Journal, 14, e716. https://doi.org/10.1002/tesj.716
