Reflection
What I have learned about the sociological perspective of the self is that it continually
interacts with the social world, a progress of relating ourselves to one another in order for us to be
cultivated with social knowledge and awareness. Subsequently, as our consciousness develops, the
self expands and becomes socially concerned, such as being sensitive or considerate to others.
Additionally, it is a part of personal development such that social interactions influence our
personality, behavior, and viewpoints about the world.
According to the social self-perspective of George Mead, the self is not biological. Instead, it is
a social entity in which the self does not grow with your physical body but ideally grows through
social interactions. For example, we tend to do things out of peer pressure in order to feel validated
and accepted in our social groups. However, these actions can be considered to be unethical because
we allow ourselves to conform to what is immorally right. This circumstance stems from our social
interaction among our peers. Relatively, role-playing is an act that provides a social image for us to
be identified and understood, and also allows us to be socially aware. According to Mead, the self has
two distinctions, the "I" and the "Me" self. Moreover, individuals have the capabilities to relate
themselves towards others at the same time are emphatic to learn and to understand the things that
they do socially. Thus, they internalized a social situation and became a selective being that becomes
socially aware. Therefore, the self grows through role playing, and creates an image that is showed
in this social world.
In conclusion, you become who you are partly because of the opinion of others or how people
look at you. Such that, positive feedbacks help the self, and negative feedbacks somehow allows the
self to realize its boundaries and limitations. These feedbacks allow us to be balanced and analytical
about the things that we do in the society.
