How you can save money on petrol.

21 December 2021
Staff Writer (Anonymous)

In recent months, South Africans have been paying more than ever for petrol and
diesel. There are numerous driving and refueling habits motorists can use to help
them reduce fuel consumption and save money.
The heavier your vehicle, the harder your engine has to work to keep it moving.
Vehicles with regular internal combustion engines can heat your car without requiring
the air conditioning to be turned on. Without the aircon’s compressor running, you will
use less fuel. If it’s a scorching day and you need to keep cool, open your windows
when driving at low speeds and keep the air conditioning turned off. For optimal
consumption, regularly pump up your tyres to the recommended pressure of your
manufacturer. If you have to visit multiple destinations on a single day, pool them
together and work out the shortest route between your stops to minimize travel
distance. Using high-quality oil with low viscosity will help reduce engine friction and
improve fuel economy. Servicing your car according to the correct schedule will help
ensure that your car is fuel-efficient. If you are stuck in terrible traffic and are
stationary for more than 30 seconds, switch your engine off to reduce fuel
consumption when it is safe to do so. Braking sharply and accelerating quickly will
increase fuel consumption by forcing you or your car to switch gears at a faster rate.

QUESTION 6
Huge fuel price hike in store for drivers in July.
15 June 2022
Staff Writer (Anonymous)

(1) (7.1) SA motorists are facing another hefty fuel price hike . The latest unaudited
data released by the Central Energy Fund shows an under-recovery that would
see the price of 95 unleaded rise about R2/l and 93 unleaded about R1.85/l. At the
time of writing, both grades of diesel (50ppm and 500ppm) look set to spike about
R1.30/l. These (7.2) sharp increases can be attributed to a strong dollar,
weakening rand, bullish global oil prices and the continued conflict in Ukraine.

(2) The government’s (7.3) temporary reduction in the general fuel levy is also set
to be halved on July 6, meaning local motorists will be hit by a further 75c/l
increase no matter what happens on the international front. It costs about R300
more to fill a Volkswagen Polo Vivo than it did one year ago, and nearly R700
more to fill a Toyota Hilux diesel bakkie. The cost of running a car is increasingly
eating (7.4) into consumers’ (7.5) disposable incomes, leading to calls for the
government to reduce the taxes that make up more than 30% of fuel prices.

(3) There (7.6) (has / have) also been calls to deregulate the retail fuel industry,
allowing retailers to set their own margins and compete on price. Responding to
concerns raised by the retail fuel industry during a recent conference in
Johannesburg, the deputy (7.7) director-general for minerals and petroleum
regulations at the department, Tseliso Maqubela, said the timing (7.8) (were / was)
not right to consider wide-scale deregulation of the industry. (7.9) Maqubela says,
”Record fuel prices in SA are not because of levies and taxes but are due to the
high price of oil.” The oil price had (7.10) risen to about $120 a barrel, and the
outlook (7.11) doesn’t bode well for lower oil prices.
