Interview with an Overseas Filipino Worker (TITA ROSE)

Interviewer: Can you tell me about your experience living and working as an
OFW?
OFW: Sure, I have been working as an OFW for the past six years in Singapore. I
migrated for better job opportunities and to provide a better life for my family
back in the Philippines. It was not an easy decision to leave my home country,
but I felt it was necessary to secure a stable income and provide for my loved
ones.
Interviewer: How did you adjust to the new environment and culture in
Singapore?
OFW: Adjusting to a new environment and culture was initially challenging. The
language barrier and cultural differences took some time to overcome. However, I
was fortunate to have fellow Filipinos who helped me settle in and introduced me
to the local customs and practices. I also made an effort to learn the local
language and understand their way of life, which helped me integrate into the
community.
Interviewer: How did you deal with people of other nationalities?
OFW: Interacting with people of other nationalities was an enriching experience. I
met people from different backgrounds and learned to appreciate and respect
their cultures. It was interesting to share our customs and traditions with each
other. There were occasional instances of misunderstandings or cultural clashes,
but overall, I found that being open-minded and respectful helped in building
positive relationships.
Interviewer: Can you share any significant events or incidents you underwent as
a migrant?
OFW: One incident that stands out is when I fell ill and had to navigate the
healthcare system in a foreign country. It was a challenging experience, as I had
to understand the medical procedures, find a suitable healthcare provider, and
communicate my symptoms effectively. Thankfully, I received support from my
employer and fellow OFWs who guided me through the process. It taught me the
importance of having a strong support system when living as a migrant.
