Module 2_Category 3_Element 1

Finishing an Inquiry
Facilitator: Dr. Kathy Swan, University of Kentucky

Once we have a strong inquiry in place, we are ready to fill the inquiry. My name is Kathy Swan
and I am going to preview the next few elements in this module that make up Phase III of the
Design Process—Finishing an Inquiry.

When we talk about Extensions and Taking Informed Action featured in this phase of the design
process, we are really targeting the inquiry practices in the KAS standards. In the language of the
standards, we call this “Communicating Conclusions”.

Teaching students to make evidenced-based arguments is the foundation of IDM. However, if

students do not have the opportunity to express their arguments in powerful ways, we have
essentially taken the social out of social studies. We want inquiries to afford students the
opportunity to become curious and invested in the compelling question, to employ a range of
old and new technologies to express their arguments, and to use those arguments to make a
difference in the world. In this section of the module, we will look at extensions and action.

But first, we go back up to the beginning of the blueprint and consider ways that a teacher’s
compelling question can authentically become the student’s quest. Dr. S.G. Grant will take us
through Creating Curiosity by Staging the Compelling Question.
