ADIA ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE 2024

STRENGTHENING DIGITAL HUMANITIES
IN ISLAMIC CIVILIZATION, LITERATURE, CULTURE,
AND LIBRARY STUDIES

A. RATIONALE
Islamic civilization in Indonesia has experienced a significant
transformation in history, literature and culture, along with the emergence
of the era of industrial revolution 4.0. Before Gutenberg invented the
printing press in the 1th century, knowledge in a nation's civilization was
immortalized in handwritten manuscripts called manuscripts. Hence,
various information and knowledge such as religion, law, customs,
astrology, medicine, engineering, architecture and history were stored in
such manuscripts. In addition, along with the industrial revolution,
Indonesian Islamic society has experienced profound changes in various
aspects of life.
The most influential thing in this change is how the internet and
mobile technology have taken an important part not only as
telecommunication media but also how social, economic and cultural
reproduction take place in Indonesia. In other words, digital culture is an
inseparable part of social change and transformation. In response to
changes in the economic, social, political and cultural landscape caused by
the development of digital technology, the idea of "digital humanities"
studies has been carried out to preserve historical, literary and cultural
heritage in Indonesia. This term refers to the meeting point between
humanities and technology with the aim of studying the use of digital
media in the humanities aspect. Digital humanities play an important role
as a collaboration between knowledge of computing technology and social
humanities knowledge related to the processes and the goals of social-
humanities studies.
In Indonesia, the development of digital humanities is still in its early
stages and is restricted to documenting cultural heritage materials in digital
form. However, this initiative has not been fully equipped with a reflective
dimension and attempts to place digital documentation as an integral part
of the research process. Therefore, it is important to strengthen the Digital
Humanities methodological paradigm to advance social-humanities
science.
In this context, the Faculty of Literature and Humanities at UIN Ar-
Raniry is going to hold the 2024 Annual International Conference;
Strengthening Digital Humanities in Islamic Civilization, Literature,
Culture, and Library Studies. This conference aims to strengthen
collaboration between experts in various humanities disciplines to create
new forms of knowledge and explore the impact of technology on
humanities-based disciplines.
