Carnival of

Venecia

By Goran, Irene and Daniela

What is carnival?

Carnival is a party that consists

of dressing up as different
characters or inventing a
costume. The origins of this
celebration date back to about
5,000 years ago, when only
organized parades were held,
unlike now, when it is celebrated
even in schools and people even
go to sporting events in
costumes just because it is
carnival.
How is it
celebrated?
The Venice Carnival is totally
different from the Spanish image,
and even more so from the
Brazilian one. During the 10 days
it lasts, people dress up in
costumes and take to the streets
to stroll and have their photos
taken, whether in organised or
impromptu parades.
Typical costumes

Some of the Venice carnival

costumes are the Harlequin,
polichinela, columbina, pierrot,
pantalone and some more.
Normally, carnival costumes,
especially in Venice, symbolize
bad spirits, because it was
thought that the only way to gain
their friendship was to dress up
as them.
Where is
celebrated?
• Carnival is always celebrated
40 days before Holy Thursday,
and normally its beginning is
between mid-February
because it depends on the day
of Holy Week.
Musical
instruments and
types of music.
The type of music they normally
play at these celebrations is
festive celebrations. This type of
music is normally performed
with trumpets, guitars and even
pianos, but they are also usually
accompanied by dances.
