Introduction
People like shopping malls because they can find a lot of different
stores in one place. Shopping malls are usually inside one or several
large buildings so people can stay out of the weather while they shop.
Escalators and walkways connect the different stores and levels.
Shopping malls usually include large department stores, and smaller
stores such as clothing stores, electronics stores and sporting goods
stores. Apart from shops and services such as restrooms and ATM
machines, there are cafés and restaurants. Many shopping malls also
have movie theaters and sports clubs.
2 Work in groups. Follow the steps to create your own shopping mall. Take turns making notes.
Step 1 Choose the stores Step 2 Make a map of your shopping mall
■ Which kinds of stores do you want to include – ■ Draw the outline of your shopping mall. What shape
sporting goods store, clothing store, is it? How many levels does it have? Where’s the
electronics store … ? main entrance?
■ Each member of the group chooses one store. Give ■ Add outlines of the different shops. Choose the best
your store a name – Sportsmania, Trends, Pi Store … place and shape for each shop.
■ What other services do you want in your shopping ■ What other things do you need to add to the plan –
mall – restaurants, movie theaters, a sports club … ? restrooms, ATM machines, stairs … ?
We should have one or two clothing stores. Let’s make the shopping mall rectangular.
I’d like to have a sporting goods store because This is the best place for the sporting
I like sports. goods store.
Why don’t we have an electronics store? I think the clothing store should be
next to the sporting goods store.
I want to call my store
Sportsmania. What do you think? We need to add some
restrooms and ATM machines.
That’s a great / a good / an interesting
idea.
Why don’t we put the restrooms here?
How about having a food court
with different restaurants? That’s a good/great idea.
