Scale of a map/scale factor:

➢ Scale of a map is actually the ratio of ratio of a certain distance in a map to the distance in
reality.
𝑆𝑐𝑎𝑙𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑎 𝑚𝑎𝑝 = 𝑚𝑎𝑝 𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 ∶ 𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑢𝑎𝑙 𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒
➢ Scale of a map or scale factor is usually presented in the form of 1 ∶ 𝑛, where 1 is the distance in
map and 𝑛 is actual distance.
➢ X1/X2 = 1/n, where X1 = map distance and X2 = actual distance.
1
➢ A1/A2 = (𝑛)2 , where A1 = map area and A2 = actual area.

Example: 1
(a) If the scale is 1 : 10,000, what length will 45cm on the map represent;
(i)in cm (ii) in m (ii) in km.
(b) Find the actual length represented on a drawing when the scale of map is 1cm to 10m.
(i) 14cm (ii) 3.2cm (iii) 7.2cm (iv) 21.7cm

Example: 2
(i) Find the length on a drawing, when the scale factor is 1cm to 10m.
(a)50m (b) 35m (c) 7.2m (d) 28.6m.
(ii) On a map of scale 1 : 1000 000, the distance between Tower Bridge and Hammersmith Bridge is 12.3cm.
What is the actual distance in kilometer?

(i) On a map of scale 1 : 15000, the distance between Buckingham Palace and Brixton Underground station is
31.4cm. What is the actual distance in kilometer?
(ii) If the scale of a map is 1: 10 000, what will be the length on this map of a road which is 5km long?

Example: 4
(i) The distance from Hertford to St. Albans is 32km. How far apart will they be on a map of scale 1 : 5000?
(ii) The 17th hole at the famous St. Andrews golf course is 420m in length. How will it appear on a plan of the
course of scale 1 : 8000?

Example: 4
(i) The scale of a map is 1 : 30000. The length of a road on the map is 4cm.
(a) Calculate the actual length, in km, of the road.
The actual area of the field is 1.08𝑘𝑚2 .
(b) Calculate the area, in 𝑐𝑚2 , of the field on the map.
[p1]
(ii) A map is drawn to a scale of 1 : 20 000. On the map, a road has a length of 1.5cm.
(a) Calculate the actual length, in m, of the road.
The actual length of a sea wall is 1.2km.
(b) Calculate the length, in cm, of the wall on the map.
The actual area of a field is 60 000𝑚2 .
(c) Calculate the area, in 𝑐𝑚2 , of the field on the map.
