1 (a) The Bernoulli's equation can be written in the form

(ii) State the four (4) conditions which must apply for this

equation. [4 marks]

A horizontal tube consists of two parts joined together end to end.


(b)
One part is 100mm long and has a radius of 0.5mm. When water

flows steadily along the tube there is a pressure differenceb


the tubes end equivalent to that due to 120mm of water. What are

the ressure differences across each of the component tubes in

terms of millimeters of water? [3 marks]

(c) () What is the importance of Reynolds's number? [2 marks]

(i) What is meant by a Newton ion fluid? 2 marks]


(i) The flow of blood in a large artery of an anaesthetized dog is
diverted through a venturimeter. The wider part of the meter
has a cross - sectional area equal to that of the artery is
8mm2. The narrow part has an area 4mm2. The pressure

drop in the artery is 24N/m2. What is the speed of the blood

in the artery? [3 marks]

(d) A wide container with a small orifice in the bottom is filled with
water and kerosene. If the water column measures 60cm and
Kerosene column 40cm, calculate the efflux velocity of water. Take
the specific gravity of water as 1.0 and kerosene as 0.8 and neglect

viscosity. [4 marks]

2 (a) () Sketch using the same axes the stress-strain curves for a
glass wire, metal wire and rubber band. [3 marks]
Discuss briefly the main features of the curves, in (i) above.

(b) One end of the copper wire is welded to a steel wire of length 1.6m
and diameter 1.0mm, while the other end is fixed. The length of
copper wire is 0.8m while its diameter is 0.5mm. A load of 10kg is
suspended from the free end of steel wire. Find the:

() Extension which will result [2 marks]


(ii) energy stored in the compound wire [2 marks]

(c) (i) Explain briefly with aid of a diagram, what you would expect
to happen to a nearly spherical water droplet resting ona
clean horizontal surface, if a tiny amount of detergent is
added to it.. 3 marks]
(ii) A bubble of volume V is formed when 9J of work is done on a

given solution. Calculate the work done to form a bubble of


volume 3v. [4 marks]

(d) Briefly explain what shape does a liquid take when it weighs

nothing? [3 marks]

3. (a) Explain, why (or how)


() Bats can ascertain distances, directions, nature and size of
the obstacles without any eyes. [2 marks]
(i) Sound or voice seems to sound better than usual when you
sing in a shower. [2 marks]
(iii) Transverse waves are not produced in liquids and gases.

(2 marks]

(b) A fork and a monochord string of length 100cm give 4 beats/s.


The string is made shorter, without any change of tension, until it
is in unison with the fork. If its new length is 99cm, what is the
frequency of the fork? [4 marks

(c) An air column 2m in length is open at both ends. The frequency of

certain harmonic is 410Hz and the frequency of the next higher


harmonic is 492Hz. Determine the speed of sound in the air
column. [4 marks

(d) A parallel beam of light of wavelength 589nm was directed


normally onto a plane diffraction grating. Measurements showed
that the angular between the first order spectra on either side of

the normal was 34.2°.

(i) Calculate the number of lines per millimeter on the grating.

4. (a With the aid of a diagram, describe an experiment to show that


excess charge resides only on the outside surface of a hollow
conductor. [6 marks]

(b) In figure below, two point charges P andS of 17.64C and 9.0uC
respectively are placed in vacuum at a distance of 21cm apart.
When a third charge, R, is placed mid-way between P and S, the
net force on S is zero.

(c) In a figure below, Ci, Ca and Ca are capacitors of capacitances
Su, 24F, and 24F respectively, connected to a battery of e.m.f.

Calculate the energy store in the system of capacitors if the


space between the plates of C is filled with an insulator of
dielectric constant 3, and the capacitors are fully charged.

(i) Account for the change in the energy stored by an isolated

parallel-plate capacitor when the plate separation is doubled.

5. (a) Explain the following terms as applied to the earth's magnetic field.

(b) Draw sketch diagrams to show the magnetic field pattern due to an
electric current flowing through a circular coil and long solenoid.

(c) A circular coil of 20 turns each of radius 1Ocm lies flat on a table.
The earth's magnetic field intensity at the location of the coil is
43.8A/m while the angle of dip is 67°. Find the:

() Magnetic flux threading the coil. [05 marks]


(i) Torque on the coil if a current of 2A is passed through it.

30cm, is mounted inside a

long solenoid of 2 x 103 turns per meter carrying a current of 20A,
