basis on which I prepared a PowerPoint presentation and this summary.
What is a Product or Service?

• Product or Service presented must be new, distinct and does not already exist in any form.

• Product or Service must be innovative and shows the social attributes of entrepreneurialism,
creativity and new market!
• Examiners like to see creativity.
You should be ……… Thinking out the box.

Conducting Research for Digital Media Project

What is Research? Why do we research?

 Research is the process of gathering information that is needed to become more informed about a subject
matter being studied. (Samuels, 2014)

Proposal

Digital/Interactive Proposal

Overview

(a) Brief Introduction (Background) (2

marks)

Provide the clear description of what your product or service will be. The product or service should be new,
innovative and shows connection to an entrepreneurial idea that does not exist before. Demonstrate how it relates
to Digital Media or how Digital Media will be used to covey the idea to the target audience. Students must be
speaking to how the Mobile App, Animation, E-Book, Interactive Web Application or E-Content is used in solving
the problem.

Suggested two paragraphs. Supporting details such as references to media report or observation can be
mentioned here as supporting argument and reference source done in References section in APA format.

(b) Description of Service or Product (3 marks)

Provide the Name of the Product or Service with the relevant Intellectual Property Symbol (TM, ©, ®, (P),
etc.). A unique name for your product or service. This could be catchy or one that contributes to the stimulating
thought of the product/service being marketed.
Rationale and Purpose of Product. Provide with clear reasons why is this solution (E-Book, Interactive Web,
Animation, Mobile App, E-Content, etc.) is being pursued for development and clearly state how it will solve
the problem. 2 marks.
Identify target audience. Clearly state who will the product or service is being proposed for and why are these
persons. What is the profile of the target audience in terms of demographics and other relevant information.
Remember to speak to how the implemented solution (e-book, interactive website, mobile app, e-content, etc.)
will be used by the target audience/market. 1 mark.

Suggestion to use headings when reporting this area for ease of identification instead of a lengthy
paragraph. REMEMBER that the focus is now on the outcome that will be made in this Unit and not a
proposal. The focus is on the KEY AREAS!!

SUMMARY OF SBA REQUIREMENTS FOR REVISED SYLLABUS 2020

Disclaimer: The views expressed in this document are the opinions and expression of Andrew Samuels and is not binding and any
definite ruling as a CXC Examiner. It is based on my own experiences and practices. The CAPE Digital Media syllabus was used as the
basis on which I prepared a PowerPoint presentation and this summary.
(a) Indicate how the idea works (1 mark)

Clearly state how persons will use the implemented solution. Ensure how it is operated is provided.
Diagram illustrating how features are used is helpful, mock-ups showcasing features is acceptable. It is
important to say how persons in the target audience/market use the product or service being implemented or
access their benefits based on the proposed solution (e-book, interactive website, e-content, etc.)

(b) Significance of the concept (2 marks)

Establish how the solution being implemented will greatly affect persons in the target audience. A clear
connection and argument must be established to suggest that the problem will be solved and to what extent
does the implemented solution affect
persons in the target audience, businesses,
new markets, etc.

Budget (3 marks)

A budget as one may recall from Principles of

Accounts or Management of Business is
simply and recording of incomes and
expenditures that are related to an activity or operation.

Budgets must be realistic and account for all variables such as:

 Professional time
 Services rendered
 Materials uses or purchased
 Professional services
 Licensing and IP related charges
 Product/Service company registration
 Research and development

Research on working out Break Even Cost and Return on Investment. You should show the accounting
working outs for these and also how you work out the cost of product or service for consumer.

Record your income and see your syllabus for the various types of incomes that exists for project (such as type
of investments). Work out the expenses by listing as many and then total each column and work out profit or
loss. It is important to also show how you arrive at the cost of the product and how much would need to be sold
to recover investments. Please note investments will have to be repaid for some types of investments.

Please take note of how the budget should be laid out. For the return on the investment ensure you work out the
breakeven cost, which is the cost to produce each unit and then how many units you will have to sell to make
back the money that you invested.

Ensure you state the source of funds for investment as stated in the syllabus in module 1 whether you are using
angel funding, venture capital, etc. See Mod 1 syllabus.

Also work out the Return on Investment which is the ROI to ensure that a profit is made on the selling of this
product or service to consumers. Therefore, suggest what percent of the project that you get will be paid back
to the investor / funding provider for the project. If you parents/guardians gave you the start up cash as angel
investors, then they will not require payment but for good business, you should show how much you would pay
them back or use the pack back and original capital donated as income paid back to the company for reinvest for
further production.

 Have realistic inputs for relating to the specific production of their product or services of the implemented
solution. This may include content creation, equipment, design and building, maintenance, resource
persons, transportation, cost for website hosting, etc. ENSURE that cost relates to the production of the
digital solution being proposed.
 Expenses provided are in keeping with the type of digital solution that is being implemented. Cost for raw
materials, intellectual property, registration, professional services, transportation, software, hardware, etc.
 Simple income and expenditure can be done, along with Break Even Analysis done in MS Excel and these
information provided through screenshots and images inserted or associated hyperlinks.

Brain Storming Chart to develop solution to problem (– 2 marks)

It is important that drawn sketches of brainstorming chart is done

with a central focus being on the implemented solution. Work out
the problem and the solution in this chart. The various factors in the
solution that will come out in the developed implemented solution as
to how they will solved the problem must be worked out. Focus on
the features in what you are implementing as a solution and use these
to point to how they work in the solution to meet the need of the
problem background that was introduced. Develop the diagram by
hand with as much details then implement this with an appropriate software such as XMind® to show moving
from traditional to digital. Progress is important more than final outcome. Insert both in the SBA and ensure
they are clearly displayed. Any detail discussion can be added to elaborate on representation. Ensure that these
are shown and/or discussed:

i. Problem Identification ii. Possible Solutions iii. Most Viable Solution

iv. Intended Outcome

Research – 3 marks

Research – Data to justify

why the product/service was
selected.

a) Development of the Data Capture instruments must be provided in electronic form with screen shots and
web link. Google Form, Video Conference, proof of observation, etc. which should solicit information
relating to the need for the implemented solution. 1 mark
b) If forms are used for survey, a completed form must be provided to show data collection. Transcript of
Video Conference, etc. in so doing ensure that information asked ties in to the need as to why students
developed or will develop the implemented solution.

KINDLY NOTE

 From this presentation, it will be clear to say what is the problem or crisis that must be solved and the
resolution/solution must be well presented. Feel free to add any relevant discussion to help with this.
 The designs from this section must follow natural progression in the documentation of the presentation
being made.

Basic Storyboards

Diagram expressing your idea development and convey a sequence of activities that express usefulness related
to the project. Show how the project found the problem and how it was resolved using a target audience in a
sort of cartoon sketching.

• The Storyboard gives a simple layout of your product or service design and how it will develop from
one stage to another. (Samuels 2014)
• A storyboard is a series of sketches, drawings or photographs used to plan and prepare for filming (one
may consider storyboards as virtual shoots in this sense). Source:
http://microfilmmaker.com/downloads/How_to_draw_storyboards.pdf

What will you need for storyboard?

• Drawing apparatus (pencil, pen, erasers, paper, ….).
• Computer drawings and other electronic tools can be used afterwards.
• A template or frame can help speed up the process. See examples in Google.
• Have a short script or screen play.
• Some creativity, inspiration and motivation is needed.

What to remember?
 Screens scenes will probably only slightly resemble.
 Storyboarding the entire movie (or even scene) is not
necessary (as long as you can justify it).
 Remember; there are no real storyboard standards or rules,
only guidelines.
 Storyboards come in different styles, find yours and stick to
it!

Storyboards help you to better understand how to develop your

product and communicate this basic idea to others.

KINDLY NOTE

For this section, it is recommended that clear situation in

which the product you are designing will be used. How it
will be used could be demonstrated using a storyboard.
Traditional and Digital storyboard should be provided.

Animatic and Outline

For animation, show how the animation will look. Video of

this can be provided. An unlisted YouTube link is very useful
here. This video can be in the software playing as it is just proof of the work being done.

basis on which I prepared a PowerPoint presentation and this summary.
Preprodution/Revisualisation/Interface Design

For this section, the presentation of digital artefacts will be assessed according to the presentation of the product
or service being done. As much details should be provided with as many supporting images as possible to give
clear view of your work in the pre-production state.

Wireframes

• A wireframe is a two-dimensional
illustration of a page’s interface
that specifically focuses on space
allocation and prioritization of
content, functionalities available,
and intended behaviors.
• For these reasons, wireframes
typically do not include any
styling, color, or graphics.
• Wireframes also help establish
relationships between a website’s
various templates.

Source: http://www.usability.gov/how-to-
and-tools/methods/wireframing.html

For Wireframes, keep it simple. Not

every project idea requires this. Used
mostly in website, mobile app development design, etc.
• Do not use colors. If you would typically use color to distinguish items, instead rely on various gray tones to
communicate the differences.
• Do not use images. Images distract from the task at hand. To indicate where you intend to place an image
and its size, you can instead use a rectangular box sized to dimension with an “x” through it.
• Use only one generic font. Typography should not be a part of the wire framing discussion. Within the
wireframes, however, you may still resize the font to indicate various headers and changes in the hierarchy of
the text information on the page.

Mockups

• A mockup, or mock-up, is a scale or full-size model of a design or device,

used for teaching, demonstration, design evaluation, promotion, and other
purposes.
• A mockup is a prototype if it provides at least part of the functionality of a
system and enables testing of a design.
• Mock-ups are used by designers mainly to acquire feedback from users.
Mock-ups address the idea captured in a popular engineering one-liner:
Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mockup

The Mockup is closer to a prototype design of the product or service that you present sketches.

Rough Designs

• a preliminary sketch of a design or picture

• preliminary drawing for later elaboration

When your sketches are complete, the close to finish sketches is presented of product/service.

Ensure that at the end of this section, the crisis or problem is clearly identified and solution developed
and is shown. There is clarity in the displayed diagraphs. This section will clearly show where you are
going with the project idea and shows incremental development.

Final Models/Props/Assets/Final Content

Final outcome of the designs can be shown here. So for animation, the final design of characters, for website,
screenshots (cropped) showing the pages; for mobile app the final designs of the screen in the mobile app. A
video clip of you talking the person reviewing the project too can also be included here. Props are the things in
the animation. Assets are the usable components that interact in the environment. Final Content is the outcome of
production and is more applicable to the E-Book/Website/Mobile App. Final Model is more linked to Mobile App.

For the website, show the HTML Mock-ups codes even if using online application to assist with web
development.

Rough edits of each digital product being designed can be shown here.

Interface is more applicable to Mobile App and Website, but also it can be applied to e-Book and
e-content/Interactive Web Pages to see the working. This has to do with how the product or service designed is
working.

It must be clear and if not, state the software used. Relevant features in the software or any digital tool used
must be seen in production.

Use of Collaboration Tools – 1 mark

Ensure that:
a) Document communication and use
Cloud-based technologies to share
documents and develop the project. Evidence must be provided to substantiate.
b) Work assignment and discussion in WhatsApp or any social media platform can be done and evidence
provided in the project.
c) Ensure that obvious interaction is established and this is sufficient and well balanced.

Students must use communication tools e.g. Skype, Google Docs, Dropbox, Wikis, Blogs, Google
Hangout, and use of digital tools to share ideas.

Part C: Product

SUMMARY OF SBA REQUIREMENTS FOR REVISED SYLLABUS 2020

Disclaimer: The views expressed in this document are the opinions and expression of Andrew Samuels and is not binding and any
definite ruling as a CXC Examiner. It is based on my own experiences and practices. The CAPE Digital Media syllabus was used as the
basis on which I prepared a PowerPoint presentation and this summary.
• Good use of space to layout content on implemented solution being well balanced and neatly spaced. 2
marks.
• Good use of typography or camera angles: Ensuring that text size and style is appropriate for implemented
solution and where animation is done, the direction from which the drawings were done. 2 marks.

THE FINAL OUTCOME – PRODUCT

 At this stage, a working solution must be testable by the Marker.

 For interactive website/e-content, ensure that website links are reachable and workable. Interactivity must
also be seen when website is being used.
 Ensure that animation show reel can be accessed from the link you provide in the SBA. This could be on
YouTube as an unlisted video.
 Mobile App must be accessible to test. Ensure that software used, log in information if required and
procedures to download, install and use is provided here.
 For e-Book ensure that the online platform is reachable and that the product can be tested.

CAUTION

It is always good that just in case the above is not possible, then, create a video/screen recording showing how
you and your team mates use the product. Feel free to talk through the video to explain how it work and ensure
video is clear so all interactions and use can be seen fully.

If the Marker cannot get to the product to review,

then these marks are harder to get as awarded
marks for testing the product.

Short Ad to sell product – 5 marks

Ensure that:
a) Present a strong audiovisual, well edited video that should be no more than 30 seconds to sell the
implemented solution.
b) The use of advertisement, marketing jingle, or any such stimulant is good.
c) Good use of English, and excellent oral communication skill must be encouraged with effective
pronunciation and other highlights of good persuasive type communication.
d) Students state the description of the implemented solution. 2 marks
e) Innovation and creativity with use of digital tools, formatting, text, cropping, image, overall presentation.
Ensure Video Ad captivates persons watching. 3 marks

RECOMMENDATIONS

• Once final file is marked, the file is PDF for submission to CXC on their ORS.
• Ensure candidate numbers, names, and properly completed cover page is on project.
• Ensure that where web links are used these are working and free from restrictions.
• The teacher can create a Cloud Storage account and provide the log in details for each project in the event
the web links are not clickable in the ORS when Markers are reviewing projects.
• Only 1 document in PDF is preferred with all links built in. Pitch link can be YouTube free of restrictions,
unlisted video.
• Make the SBA as easy as possible to follow and it is best to layout the SBA according to the Mark Scheme
being used as this allows for Markers to better pick up information to award marks.
• It may be wise to do a screen recording of the implemented solution being demonstrated as to how it is used
and its features and the student talk through the process.
• Sometimes, Markers have difficulty to complete marking as they cannot view the content of the
implemented solution and so the demonstration video is very useful.
• Ensure that all attempts is made to ensure that the Marker sees the evidence of the implemented solution.
Screen shots of the final product can be placed in the SBA.

APPENIX IF NEEDED

Design Data Capture Instrument

At this stage, the actual instruments of data collection that will be used. If you are doing questionnaires ensure
that it is done digitally and not a Word Processing Document given for persons to print and use. Using Vox
Pop, then there should be digital data capture recording, using any means of data collection, this must be done
digitally. Nothing that is traditional. Facebook and social media can be used to discuss aspects of your project
and record this. Surveys should also be done digitally and show evidence of the instruments that you choose to
use whether by screen shots or photograph of it.

Data Collection

Show how the data was collected. Evidence of the data collection should be clearly visible. For digital
methods, screen shots are acceptable.

Data Analysis

Provide evidence to show how the data you collected has been used and assessed to provide understanding of
the situation you are studying. The data analysis will show summaries, user profiles (facts you gathered of the
type of users for the product or service), it will reflect opinions or ideas that you get as feedback from the target
audience, etc. Reading supporting literatures is acceptable with you giving a citation or quotes from it or refer
to it in the document in APA format. E.g., the Daily Gleaner March 16, 2015, page 2 reported that residents of
inner city communities experience ………. or “Harrsion (2015) stated that residents of inner-city communities
reported that……

Remember, these read documents found digitally using search engines or browsing the newspaper websites,
should be shown in your data collection section as evidence of data collection and listed in your bibliography
and reference section. Bibliography lists all materials that are used in the project to direct your thinking and
writing. References provide a list of materials that you quoted from or used directly when you wrote the
document that you spoke to.

Data Presentation

Provide evidence of the data that was analysed and • A rationale is an overview synopsis of why something
display this graphically. Tables, Graphs, Charts, etc. is done.
Show evidence for a greater understanding to be had
of what data you analysed. Remember to label the  Why did you propose this product or service?
images or figures using Fig. 1, Fig. 2 or Table 1,
Table 2 and provide brief annotations explaining its  What need in the society does it address?
usefulness or information it contains.

Use of Collaboration Tools

Persons working in team must show they worked closely together. That is, WhatsApp conversations, emails,
meeting notes from the project diary if one is used can be provided and labelled. Use of cloud storage to share
content is also a good way to show who had access to materials for editing. Use of project management and or
project tracking software is also a good insert here such as use of Trello®.

As many digital tools that are appropriately used for this section can be shared as to how the digital tools
were sued to visually share ideas.

Convergence of techniques

How the entire product comes together making use of all its elements. Ensure that audio works for Animation
and that graphics or illustrations works well in the e-Book and Interactive Web/e-Content and for mobile apps,
movements between screens and links work as well as graphics.

FAULTS EXAMINERS HAD IN 2014 – 2019 EXAMINATIONS

 Poorly organized documentation. Poorly formatted word processing document without a proper cover page,
lack of a detailed table of contents. References not used or provided.
 Poor planning for project. Evidence suggested that group meetings were not being done and that little
information was provided to show group consensus reached on matters of interest.
 Sketches not done or submitted and where they were, they were limited, not labelled, some were not even
visible after being scanned.
 Poor presentation of written project – using correct APA formatting i.e. page numbering, font size, style,
table of contents, cover page, bibliography, references, use of tables and appropriate illustrations correctly
labeled.
 Electronic submissions were not used
 Online tools such as Drop Box and others were not properly used and accounted for.
 Google docs was poorly used and at times, teachers did not encourage students to put screenshots of their
online work into the written project.
 File formats used was not accessible easily by Examiners. Time had to be spent finding compatible
software to open.
 Poor written and oral communication skills.
 Pitches lack excitement, creativity, and DID not captivate the audience.
 Poorly layout projects – no format used to keep in line with how the mark scheme is laid out. As such,
Examiners had to be searching for what they are marking for.
 Examiners unable to access the digital product for marking. Sometimes there were time expirations on the
links like trial versions that only lasted for a month and by the time marking was to be done, this has
surpassed.
 Log in restrictions – some web content or even mobile content, passwords and procedures to access step by
step instructions were not provided.

RECOMMENDATIONS

 Submissions must be properly labeled:

i.e.
Rough Design 1, Rough Design 2,
Milestone, Production Schedule
 Where 3rdparty software like Visio, Smart Draw, Drop Box, etc. are used, evidence of these should be
shown in written project!
 Sketches were too close to each other and Examiners were not sure which is a Wireframe or Mock up or
Rough Design as they were not following generally acceptable rules of creation.
 More care must be taken by students to ensure that all persons in the group are in the project planning,
execution and reporting.
 Examiners liked seeing pictures of work students are engaged doing.
 Also, with Project Diary, this helped us to see physical proofs of meetings held, decisions taken, etc. Place
in Appendix.
 Digital tools were poorly used and poorly documented and accounted for in the projects.
