The apparatus is used for determining maximum and mean pore size of the filter filter paper
and other filtration or similar media. Pore size and permeability are most important
characteristic for filtration media.
HOW TO OPERATE
Definition
Max and mean pore of filter paper is here in defined as that pore size is such that, when a fluid is forced
through the medium under pressure, one half the fluid by volume passes through pores of equal or larger size
and one of half passes through pores smaller in size (Air is used as fluid in this procedure )
Bubble pressue for mean pore is assumed to be equal to differential air pressure across the medium at which
the volume of air flow through the medium after it has been completely wetted with a given fluid is exactly
one-half the volume of air which occurred at the same differential pressure before the medium was wetted.
Appratus Used:
Test rig consisting of sample holding fixture
Metallic plates of required diameter
Mercury mano meter 300 mm
Water mano meter
Air Pressure Gauge
Air Flow Regulator
Air Flow Precession flow meter
Wash bottle
The test pieces is cut form the sample . It is the then place in between two metallic disc of specified dia meter for the
particular grade refer annexure -1
Down Corrosponding to the sample flow rates as in the case of dry paper the dry and wet manometer reading
are plotted in a Graph.
PLOTT GRAPH
THE DRY AND WET MANO METER READINGS ARE PLOTTED IN A GRAPH WITH LPM ON THE Y-AXIS,
AND MANO METER READING (PRESSURE) ON X-AXES THE BUBBLE PRESSURE (P) IS OBTAIN BY
DETERMING AT WHAT PRESSURE THE CURVES FOR THE DRY AND WETTED CONDITIONS ARE
SEPRATED BY A DISTANCE EQUAL TO THE DISTANCE OF X-AXES, AND THE WET CURVE.
CALCULATION
TEST PIECE CUT OUT FROM THE SAMPLE IT IS THAN PLACED THAN BETWEEN TWO PLATES
OF SAMPLE HOLDING FIXTUERE OR TWO METALLIC DISCS REQUIRED DIA METRE (SEE
ANNAXURE-1) AND IT IS TIGHTEND .
METHENOL IS POURED ABOVE THE TEST PIECE UP THE LAVEL OF TESTING FIXTURE CAVITY
ABOVE THE TEST PIECE AND PASSES THE AIR WHEN FIRST BUBBLE START ON SAMPLE
HOLDING FIXTURE THAN NOTED THE READ OF WATER MANO METER IN MM
(SEE ANNAXURE-3)
FOR EXAMPLE
FILTRATION MEDIA TEST PIECE IS CUT FROM THE SAMPLE THAN PLACED BETWEEN TWO
PLATES OF METALIC DISC REQUIRED DIA (REFER ANNAXURE-1) ASSEMBLY PUT ON THE
SAMPLE HOLDING FIXTURE AND IT IS TIGHTEND AND PASSES THE AIR UP TO 24 LPM THAN
NOTED THE READING OF WATER MANOMETER IN MM

HOLDING TEST FIXTURE
PUT METHYL ALCHOHAL OVER THE PAPER SAMPLE HAVING CAVITY WHICH IS FILLED TO
HOLD ABOUT CAVITY LEVEL OF THE SOLVENT
AT THE SAME TIME AFTER NOTING MANOMETER READING FOR MAX PORE SIZE. INCREASE
COMPRESSED AIR SO AS TO OBSERVE MANY UNIFORMS LAYERS OF BUBBLE EMERGING
OUT THROUGH THE WHOLE PAPERS SURFACE AND AT THIS POINT NOTE DOWN THE WATER
MANOMETER READING (P) IN MM WG CALCULATE MEAN PORE SIZE BY FORMULA.
TAKE READING AIR FLOW V/S MM HG (P) AT DIFFERENT (LPM 4,6,8,10,12,14………) IN DRY
CONDITION.
NOW PUT WETTING FLUID METHYL ALCHOHAL OVER THE PAPER IN CAVITY AND INCREASE
THE AIR PRESSURE AND TAKE P (MM HG) OR (MM WG) READING AT DIFFERENT (LPM.4, 6, 8, 10,
12,14……….)
