3 Warnings and cautions
3.1 General
This chapter details the recommended safety precautions to be taken when working with the DWS.
The safety guidelines are divided into Warnings and Cautions. Warnings alert you to dangers which may
cause physical injury, ill health in any form, or possibly loss of life. Cautions are used to denote possible
damage to equipment but not danger to personnel.
The DWS installation, commissioning, integration, and maintenance procedures must be performed only
by properly trained and authorised personnel. The equipment must be installed and located such that only
authorised personnel have access to its potentially dangerous parts.
3.2 Warnings
As a general guideline, follow the PC provider's instructions when installing plug-in units into the DWS PC.
3.3 Cautions
An electrostatically sensitive device is an electronic component that may be permanently damaged by the
electrostatic charges encountered in routine handling, testing, and transportation etc.
Electrostatic discharge is caused by direct contact or by an electrostatic field. If a charged body approaches
an electrically conducting surface, the acquired potential will discharge through that surface. The current flow
resulting from this might induce a voltage high enough to cause permanent damage to associated circuitry.
Electrostatically sensitive devices carry the label shown in Figure 2 (some units are labelled with the symbol
only, not the text).
CAUTION
The body of a person handling the DWS plug-in units must be grounded (via a 1 MΩ series resistor) to the
same earthing point as the DWS PC itself by means of a conductive wrist strap. This ensures that both
equipment and person are at the same electrical potential and that no current can flow between them.

The drivers are located on the installation package (:\Release x.x\Drivers\Soundcard\xxx
(audio card brand)\) where x.x stands for the version number of the TETRA System release
and xxx represents the audio card brand.
You can then proceed to install the driver for your audio card:
Note that if some other audio card is in use, the values of the ASIO buffer to be set for the cards can differ
from the values mentioned in the instructions. Lower buffer depths result in lower latency from input to output.
However, they can also result in buffer overruns that cause clicks and pops. Buffer overruns occur when the
computer's CPU runs out of processing power and cannot provide data quickly enough to the driver. If clicks
and pops occur, either the buffer depth must be increased to give the CPU more time, or the CPU's load must
be reduced by removing plug-ins, tracks or other DSP.
In this case the generic values recommended to be used for both of the cards are 450 – 600 samples for an
E1 interface and 110 – 140 samples for an IP interface.

6 Troubleshooting the installation
6.1 Windows does not detect the inserted Xgear16 or Multi-GEM
cards when starting up
Try re-inserting the card or inserting the card in a different slot (PCI Express slot for the Xgear16 and
Multi-GEM).
For Xgear16 and the Multi-GEM: check that the diagnostic LEDs on the I/O bracket light in yellow. The LED
that cannot be seen when the PC cover is installed (LD3 in the jumper-settings figure) must light in green. If
not, the card might be broken or incompatible with the PCI Express bus version of your PC.
If the files are not found, install the DWS SW again (see 4.5 ).
Check that the Xgear16 drivers are present and that the card is functioning properly. Do this by checking the
card's properties (Device Status) in Device Manager.
The Xgear16 drivers' files are X16dsp.sys and X16pcif.sys. If the drivers are not present, install them
again (see 4.3.1.1 ).
If the files are not found, install the DWS SW again (see 4.5 ).
Check that the Multi-GEM drivers are present and that the card is functioning properly. Do this by checking
the card's properties (Device Status) in Device Manager.
If the files are not found, install them again (see 4.3.2.1 ).

A DWS file structure
The following folders are created on your system assuming that you installed the DWS into the default
folder (Program Files):
• Dispatcher Workstation
This folder contains the licence file which is copied to this folder during the commissioning procedure.
• bin
This folder contains the executable (*.exe) files and library (*.dll) files.
• Tabs
This directory contains the text file (dwgman__tablabel.txt) where the user defines the customer tab
captions and binary files (*.dat) containing the list of groups defined in each tab and the position and size
of the groups dialogue and the groups communication dialogues when they have been locked by user.
