LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

QUARTER 3 – WEEK 8
PHYLOGENY

Objective: 1. Identify the unique /distinctive characteristic of a specific taxon relative to other taxa.
2. Describe species diversity and cladistics, including the types of evidence and
procedure that can be used to establish evolutionary relationships.

Lesson Overview: The concept of a phylogenetic tree with a single trunk representing a
common ancestor with the branches representing the divergence of species form their
ancestor, fits well. However, evidences from modern DNA sequence analysis and new
developed computer algorithm have caused skepticism about the validity if the standard tree
model.

Activity 1 Creating a Phylogenetic Tree

Part I Using the information from your character matrix, arrange the species based on their shared
characters. At the tip of each branch identify the species.

Procedure: Examine the table showing the classification of four organism and then answer the question.

Taxa Species 1 Species 2 Species 3 Species 4 Species 5

Order Carnivora Carnivora Carnivora Carnivora Carnivora
Family Felidae Mustelidae Mustelidae Canidae Canidae
Genus Panthera Taxidea Lutra Canis Canis
Species Pardus Taxus Lutra Latrans Lupus

Mackerel Yes Yes No No No
Frog Yes Yes Yes No No
