What is vertebrate?

Vertebrates is an animal of a large group distinguished by the possession of a

backbone or spinal column.

Five Groups of Vertebrates:

1. Fishes are cold-blooded animals that live in water and have a body
shape adapted for living, have gills, scales and moving in aquatic
habitats.

2. Amphibians are cold-blooded animals that can live in both land and
water, with legs and lungs for breathing air.

3. Reptiles are cold-blooded animals that can live in both water and land,
with some having strong beaks and long lives.

4. Birds - are warm-blooded animals with a respiratory system and

different body structures to adapt to their environment, such as perching,
water birds, flightless birds, and birds of prey.

5. Mammals are warm-blooded, have two sets of limbs and permanent

teeth, have mammary glands that can produce milk and give birth inside
the female's body.
Mammals come in different forms and sizes, with primates being the
most advanced. Their higher levels of intelligence come primarily from
their larger brains

I. Making What is vertebrate?
Generalizations What are the different groups of vertebrates?
and Abstraction
about the lesson A vertebrate is an animal that has a backbone made up of vertebrae. Vertebrates
are the most diverse group of animals on Earth, and they include fish,
amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals.
Here are the different groups of vertebrates:
 Fish: Fish are the most diverse group of vertebrates, and they live in all
types of water bodies from fresh water to saltwater. Fish have fins that
they use to swim, and they breathe through gills.
 Amphibians: Amphibians are animals that can live both in water and on
land. They have gills when they are tadpoles, but they develop lungs
when they become adults. Amphibians include frogs, toads,
salamanders, and newts.
 Reptiles: Reptiles are animals that have scales and live on land. They
breathe through lungs, and they lay eggs with hard shells. Reptiles
include snakes, lizards, turtles, and crocodiles.
 Birds: Birds are animals that have feathers and wings. They breathe
through lungs, and they lay eggs with hard shells. Birds are the only
vertebrates that can fly.
 Mammals: Mammals are animals that have hair or fur, and they give
birth to live young. They breathe through lungs, and they produce milk
to feed their young. Mammals include humans, dogs, cats, whales, and
elephants.
