Romantic art focused on emotions, feelings, and


moods of all kinds including spirituality,
imagination, mystery, and fervor.

The subject matter varied widely including


landscapes, religion, revolution, and peaceful
beauty.

Géricault was the first French
master and the leader of the
French realistic school. His

Gothic or Neo-Gothic, Gothic Revival is an
architectural movement that began in the late
1740s in England.

ARCHITECTURE castellation which is the crenellated walls and

Heavily castellated Neogothic buildings are


often referred to as “castles”, even though they
never served a defensive purpose.
Among them was Strawberry Hill (demolished), the most famous work of the decorative
phase of the Gothic Revival.

• Felix Hidalgo was acknowledged


as one of the great Filipino
painters of the late 19th century
and also as significant in
Philippine history for having been
an acquaintance and inspiration
for members of the Philippine
reform movement

NOVICIO (1857-
1899)
• Juan Luna is a painter and
sculptor and he became
one of the first recognized
Philippine artists.
• He was also a political
activist of the Philippine
Revolution during the late
19th century.
• The painting Spoliarium by Juan Luna shows
The painting features a glimpse of the cruelty, injustices, sufferings and
Roman history centered on the helplessness experienced by the
bloody carnage brought by gladiators. The painting reveals how people
gladiatorial matches. were deprived of their freedom and rights.
The subject of Luna’s Spoliarium can
be interpreted as an allegory of
Imperial Rome corresponding to
Imperial Spain.

• Tolentino is a Filipino
sculptor who was
named National Artist
for the Visual Arts in
1973, and is hailed as
the “Father of
Philippine Arts.”
