Hoists & Lifts (Section 27)
• Every hoist or lift shall be examined by a competent
person at least once in twelve months
• Every hoist way shall be protected by an enclosure
fitted with gates and any such gate shall be fitted
with efficient interlocking or other devices to secure
that the gate cannot be opened except when the
cage or platform is at the landing and that the cage
or platform cannot be moved until the gate is closed
• Maximum load which can be carried should be
marked on the hoist / lift and no load greater than
that shall be permitted to be carried

Chains, Ropes & Lifting Tackle (section 28)
All Chains, Ropes & Lifting Tackle shall be
examined by a competent person at least once
on six months

• Safe means of access should be provided to


every place at which any person has at any
time to work
• If the person is liable to fall a distance more
than six feet every practicable measure should
be taken to prevent falling

OSHAS Standards
• A railing should have a Top Rail, Intermediate Rail
and a Toe Board
• Height from the upper surface of the top rail to the
floor should be 42 inches
• Intermediate Rail – Halfway between top rail and
floor
• Height of the toe board should be 4 inches
• Clearance between the floor and the bottom of the
toe board should be ¼ inch

working in confined spaces (Section 32)
Where work has to be done inside any chamber, tank, vat, pit,
pipe or similar confined space, in which dangerous fumes,
toxic substances or liquids are liable to be present or a
deficiency of oxygen is liable to occur,
a) The confined space shall be provided with a manhole , which
may be rectangular, oval or circular in shape, and shall be not
less than18 inches long and 16 inches wide or if circular not
less than 18 inches in diameter or in case of tank wagons and
other mobile plant not less than 16 inches long and 14 inches
wide or if circular not less than16 inches in diameter, and
working in confined spaces (Section 32)
b)No person shall enter a confined space for any purpose unless
the following requirements are complied with
1 All practicable steps shall be taken to remove any fumes,
toxic substances or harmful liquids which may be present
and to prevent any ingress of fumes
2 Unless it has been ascertained by a suitable method that
the space is free from dangerous fumes or toxic substances
or harmful liquids the person entering shall wear a belt to
which a rope is attached and the free end of the rope is
held by a person outside or,
the person entering shall wear a suitable breathing
apparatus

Tanks or vessels containing explosive or inflammable gas, vapour
or substance - Section 33

No plant, tank or vessel which contains or has


contained any explosive or inflammable
substance shall be subjected to any welding or
cutting operation which involves the
application of heat, until all practicable steps
have been taken to remove the substance.

Section 41-means of exit
• Emergency exits should not be locked in such
manner that they cannot be easily &
immediately opened from the inside
• Doors should be either of sliding type or
should open outwards
• Emergency exits should be clearly marked

Notification of Accidents (Section 61)
Where any accident occurs in a factory which-
1. Causes loss of life to a person employed in that factory; or
2. Disables any such person for more than three days; or
3. Makes any such person unconscious as a result of heat,
electric shock or inhalation of poisonous fumes or gases,
written notice of the accident shall forthwith be sent by the
occupier to the District Factory Inspecting Engineer.

Where an accident occurs in the factory causing the


death of any person employed therein, no person
shall touch or disturb or cause any other person to
touch or disturb, without the permission of a factory
inspecting engineer ,any machinery or any article
which was involved in such accident, other than for
the purpose of extricating or attending on any
person concerned in such accident

• Form 10 should be sent


• Follow up report on Form CFIE 1 should be sent
